Updates and highlights of Orange County Scouting.

Scouting in Action— Orange County Scouts making a difference Local Scout Receives National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award CJ Writer has been selected to receive the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award. CJ’s Eagle Scout Project was to design and install four Water Conservation Gardens for the City of Anaheim’s Lenain Water Treatment Facility located in Anaheim Hills. The four gardens are 1,188 square feet each or 4,752 square feet total and include 293 plants. The gardens are: Succulent Garden, Hummingbird/Butterfly Garden, California Native Garden, and Edible Garden. The gardens will be used by the City of Anaheim to demonstrate water-wise plants, irrigation and gardening techniques to facility visitors, on facility tours and to Anaheim residents. Programs Continue to Succeed in Helping Underserved Youth The Orange County Council, continues to expand programs to reach underserved youth. The emphasis of recruiting more diverse families and youth into Scouting is essential in providing programs that meet the needs of Orange County young people and expand Scouting into new communities by adapting the program to culture and urban life to fit their needs. New Scouts from Santa Ana are pictured here as they meet Rex Tillerson at the Leadership Breakfast. Thanks to generous financial support of concerned individuals and foundations, along with tireless efforts of dedicated volunteer leaders, hundreds of young people are experiencing the life-transforming benefits of Scouting. Highlights have included leadership, teamwork, life-skills education, community service and local hikes in the outdoors.

Scouts Save Lives Orange County Scouts were recently recognized with life saving and meritorious action awards for saving a life under circumstances that indicated heroism and risk to one’s own life or showed service of a rare or exceptional character that reflected an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others. Mark Jorgensen Mark Jorgensen and his family were swimming at a local pool where his three-year-old sister slipped under the water. A layer of foam obscured her detection. Mark noticed a strange color in the water and investigated. He quickly pulled her out of the pool and got her help. The emergency doctors that later treated her for dry drowning said that Mark’s sister was moments from drowning death. Mark’s awareness and quick action saved his sister’s life. Luke Westrup One evening Luke noticed that his brother started making a loud honking sound and grabbed for his throat (the universal sign of choking.) Before he could think about it, he picked his brother up from the floor in the Heimlich position. Three thrusts and the cracker came shooting out of his mouth. Upon receiving the award, Luke said, “First aid has always been my favorite Merit Badge and this knowledge and remaining calm came in handy to save my brother.” Scout-O-Rama, Eagle Dinner and Opening Day at Sea Base The Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America (OCBSA) held its annual Scout-O-Rama (S-O-R) event on Saturday, May 13th at the Oak Canyon Park. Scout-O-Rama provided families a fun-filled day with more than 250 exciting exhibits, outdoor competitions and live demonstrations. Events included Explorer demonstrations, canoe racing, rock wall climbing, wooden derby-car racing, rope bridges and informational booths about Scouting and its many lifelong-learning programs. The theme of the event was "Are you tougher than a Boy Scout," which highlighted all of the experiential outdoor activities that kids and their families enjoy. For Scouts, the best way to find out what they do best is to do it—and that doing was the focus of Scout-O-Rama and all of Scouting’s programs!

Eagle Dinner celebrates nearly 700 Eagles The Eagle Dinner, held in April, honored the nearly 700 Eagle Scouts from the class of 2016. Rio Olympic Beach volleyball player, Casey Patterson, an Eagle Scout from southern California, was the keynote speaker for this event. He highlighted how his Scouting experiences influenced him throughout his life to become an Olympic beach volleyball player. “The Scout motto of being prepared is something I’ve taken to heart, as a professional and then becoming an Olympian; preparation is the most important thing.”

Hundreds salute Newport Sea Base Opening Day and celebrate 80th Anniversary The Newport Sea Base had its opening day May 6, the official beginning of summer programs, and celebrated its 80th anniversary of providing life-skills education and leadership development programs to thousands of Orange County youth annually. Welcoming remarks from Sea Scouts, volunteers and local dignitaries highlighted the impact the Newport Sea Base has had on the youth and community through its diverse environmental efforts including outreach to underserved boys and girls.
