We acknowledge of course a tradition of social, political, and cultural criticism in and about the regional/diasporic Caribbean. We want to honor that tradition but also to argue with it, because in our view it is in and through such argument that a tradition renews itself, that it carries on its quarrel with the generations of itself: retaining/revising the boundaries of its identity, sustaining/ altering the shape of its self‑image, defending/resisting its conceptions of history and community. It seems to us that many of the conceptions that guided the formation of our Caribbean modernities—conceptions of class, gender, nation, culture, race, for example, as well as conceptions of sovereignty, development, democracy, and so on—are in need of substantial rethinking. What we aim to do in our journal is to provide a forum for such rethinking. -

Cambridge University Press 0521841313 - White Creole Culture, Politics and Identity During the Age of Abolition David Lambert Excerpt More information Introduction: white creole culture, politics and identity This book is concerned with the place of ‘whiteness’ in the controversy over the enslavement of people of African descent in the British empire during the ‘age of abolition’.1 Focussing on the West Indian plantation colonies, this controversy comprised antislavery campaigning, proslavery lobbying, parliamentary debates, mass petitioning and imperial policy formulation, all in the context of ongoing and intensified resistance from the enslaved populations themselves.2 As one of the ‘great debates of the age’, the issue of slavery raised questions about human nature, moral duty, free trade, colonial rights and Britain’s imperial future.3 A recurrent theme was the nature of racial difference and whether enslaved people of African origin were truly ‘men’ and ‘brothers’. The antislavery slogan ‘Am I not a man and brother?’, accompanied by the kneeling figure of a black enslaved man, evoked the essentially familiar, though culturally and morally inferior, ‘other’ that was at the heart of antislavery discourse. Grateful, redeemable and silent, the kneeling slave was a passive figure in this discourse – a passivity that was repeatedly contested by enslaved resistance. Against this, those involved in slavery and their supporters portrayed black people as subhuman, un-Christian units of labour who were better off in the colonial plantation societies than they would be in ‘barbaric’ Africa. Yet ‘blackness’ was not the only issue of political and cultural controversy. The figure of the white West Indian master was also a locus of competing pro- and antislavery discourses. -

LANGUAGE ATTITUDES, IDENTITY, AND MIGRATION 2 Abstract The social, political, and linguistic situations in Barbados specifically and the English- official West Indies generally are marked by the legacy of hundreds of years of colonial rule. Labor flows from poorer countries like Guyana to richer ones like Barbados calcify regional economic hierarchies that replaced regional colonial offices. TEARE Interviewed by: Charles Stuart Kennedy Initial interview date: July 31, 1998 Copyright 2006 ADST Q: Can we start? Could you tell me something about when and where you were born and about your family? TEARE: Cleveland, Ohio, February 21st, 1937. My father was an architect at that time working for the government, later for most of his career in private practice. My mother had taught for a little while but did not work while my sister and I were growing up. I lived from age three or so through high school in the suburb of Lakewood which is the first one west of Cleveland. I graduated from high school there. Q: Could you talk about your early schooling? TEARE: Well I don't know that there is a lot to be said. It was essentially like everyone else's. One of the interesting angles though was that the high school I went to was brand new in 1918 just at the time of the flu epidemic. It had a lot of newly hired faculty and some of them who had taught my parents and my parents' siblings were still there when I got there thirty years later. Mapping Caribbean Cyberfeminisms
1 1 Mapping Caribbean Cyberfeminisms Tonya Haynes Caribbean cyberfeminisms are diverse, heterogeneous, and polyvocal. Net- works may be simultaneously national, regional, global, transnational, and dias- poric.Through practices of media creation, curating, (re)blogging, (re)tweeting, sharing, and commenting across multiple social media platforms, Caribbean fem- inist knit together an online community that is often linked to on-the-ground or- ganizing and action. Online feminist practices are therefore rich archives for the study of Caribbean feminisms. To date, scholarly work on women’s and feminist movements in the region has failed to document and analyze these practices and sites of activism. Similarly, Caribbean feminist critiques of technology and new me- dia are not well developed.The essay attends to this gap by offering a partial and preliminary mapping Caribbean cyberfeminisms primarily through documentation and analysis of Caribbean feminist blogs. The murder of Japanese pannist Asami Nagakiya at Trinidad and Tobago’s carni- val generated international headlines.The mayor of Port of Spain, Raymond Tim Kee, seemed to blame Nagakiya for her own death, couching the violence against her as a result of “vulgarity and lewdness in conduct,” underscoring that “women have a respon- sibility to ensure they are not abused.”1 Trinidadian women (and men) assembled outside City Hall to demand the mayor’s resignation.They also shifted the public conversation on gender-based violence away from what they deemed “victim-blaming” and “slut- shaming” toward one of state accountability and respect for women’s autonomy and bodily integrity. Opened in San Francisco in December of 2005, the museum is literally positioned between archives. Located near Union Square, the museum stands across the street from the Cali- fornia Historical Society, and a few doors down from, the San Francisco Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Archives. Each one of these institutions holds pieces of Black history, but there is no single structure that houses a satisfactory story. For a Black queer subject like me, standing between these institutions brings into stark relief the fractured and incomplete nature of the archives. -

According to the author, this process demonstrated aspects of a continuum, rather than sharply marked phases and abrupt changes. Before the abolition of slavery slaves behaved as proto- peasants and proto-proletarians and many aspects of slavery survived the abolition. Yet there is an artificiality in separating the transition out of a slave labor system within the British colonies from later processes else- where, and this is made all the more unacceptable by the general decay of mercantilism, the progressive spread of free trade and laissez faire princi- ples, and the concurrent substitution of a world-wide and intensifying cap- italist system. The British slave trade from Africa was ended in 1808 and British slaves were formally freed in 1838, whereas both the trade and the institution of slavery lingered on in other imperial systems. -
