It was released to address new threats to marriage and conjugal unity, and indeed is translated “On Christian Marriage” or “On Chastity in Marriage.” The document explores the meaning of Christian marriage and emphasizes its threefold purpose as borrowed from St. Augustine [10]: to produce offspring, to grow in conjugal faith, and to show benefit from the sacrament. It begins by exploring the nature of marriage, followed by a discussion of its advantages for individuals and societies, erroneous but common beliefs about marriage, threats to pure marriage, and finally how to address them. Included in the threats to pure marriage is that of the growing popularity of contraception [11] and abortive procedures, at which point Pope Pius XI [7] elaborates on the Church’s statement that life begins at conception [12]. Pope Pius XI’s account of the true purpose of Christian marriage places significant weight on the proper use of sexuality in marriage, in keeping with the Roman Catholic tradition. The stated primary function of this aspect of marriage is procreation [13] for the generation and education of children. In addition to bringing a couple closer together, the exclusivity of this act is considered essential to marital happiness and adultery is strongly condemned. -

POLYGAMY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA AND THE MUNUS DOCENDI: CANONICAL STRUCTURES IN SUPPORT OF CHURCH DOCTRINE AND EVANGELIZATION Prosper B. LYIMO, Ottawa, Canada, 2011 ABSTRACT The practice of polygamy poses some challenging canonical and pastoral problems for the Christian churches in sub-Saharan Africa. This work explores these problems from the perspective of Roman Catholic canon law in light of traditional African cultural values and Roman Catholic theology. It develops some strategies for evangelization and catechesis which are consistent with the Catholic Church’s teaching and which support the pastoral care of people living in polygamous societies. In the first of four chapters, the thesis considers various cultural aspects of polygamy in sub-Saharan Africa: its practice, prevalence, effects on Christian marriage and family life, civil law considerations, and related questions such as the rights of women and children in polygamous unions. The second chapter surveys the principal aspects of the Church’s teachings on marriage and polygamy, teachings that are rooted in Scripture and the great Tradition as consistently taught by councils, popes, and most Catholic theologians and canonists. The third chapter treats various canonical norms related to marital unity in general and to polygamous marriages in particular. The fourth and final chapter focuses on canonical and pastoral approaches to evangelization in polygamous societies today that conform to the requirements of the Catholic faith and its canon law. -

In several Catholic countries, before marrying in the Church Catholic couples, attend a course at the Roman Curia, a local branch of the Vatican where they teach natural birth control and discourage abortion. In order to obtain an annulment, i.e. the dissolving of a marriage, both partners and their families, (parents and brothers and sisters) are questioned by the Roman Curia psychologists, who will decide whether both partners, or only one of the partners, is responsible for the break up of the marriage. In many cases the annulment is only granted to one of the partners, and it is only this partner that is able to marry again in the Catholic Church. Paul McPartlan, S.T.L., D.Phil. The image of the Church as the Bride of Christ is a long-standing and preeminent ecclesial image that continues to offer insights and provoke questions for ecclesiology. Interest in ecclesial bridal imagery reemerged with particular intensity in the Catholic Church in the first half of the twentieth century through the ressourcement. While the magisterium of Pope John Paul II is particularly well-known for its use of spousal imagery, there was a significant trajectory of teaching on the Church as the Bride of Christ in preceding papal and conciliar teaching. This dissertation investigates (1) the use of ecclesial bridal imagery in twentieth-century papal and conciliar teaching from Leo XIII to John Paul II, and (2) the significance and implications of such usage for ecclesiology. The study first surveys the historical use of ecclesial bridal imagery, illustrating the image‘s traditional application in various areas of theology. It then discusses the notion of metaphor in preparation for the subsequent analysis of the nature and use of ecclesial bridal imagery.
