Before the Roman era, for example, mummies had been placed in wooden coffins, while the Gilded Lady is preserved in only linen wrappings and cartonnage, a papier mâché-like material. -

The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial was built by Philip II in the 16th century and served as a royal palace, monastery and necropolis for numerous Spanish kings. The “El Escorial” is one of the most important visitor sites in Spain. Philip II wished to commemorate the Spanish victory in the battle of St. Quentin, fought on August 10th 1557 on St. Lawrence’s day. As Philip II was devoted to this Saint he decided to build the monastery as a royal pantheon. The king decided to found a religious institution to house the pantheon of his entire dynasty, together with a place of worship, a royal palace, a community of Hieronymite monks, a seminary and a library. The Monastery took twenty-one years to be built (from 1563 to 1584). In the beginning the work was directed by Juan Bautista de Toledo, but following Toledo’s premature death in 1567, his pupil Juan de Herrera began to excel as supervisor of the works. Herrera took over the direction and changed it somewhat into his own personal style. THE ROYAL MAUSOLEUM Philip II wanted to build a crypt below the High Altar, destined for a Royal Pantheon. But he died before his wish was accomplished, and it was his son, Philip III, who fulfilled his father’s desire. Works started in 1617 under the direction of the architect Juan Gómez de Mora. On his death, the work was already well advanced but the project remained unfinished for twenty-two years. -

Archaeology Activity Book Illustrations: Heather Brindza Text: Danielle Ellis Layout: Rebecca Conway Appalachian Forest Heritage Area (AFHA) is a non-profit, grassroots organization that promotes economic and community development by linking central Appalachian forest history, culture, natural history, products and forest management into a multi-state heritage tourism initiative. Monongahela National Forest hosts AFHA-sponsored AmeriCorps service at forest sites that enhance natural resources and tourism and connect local communities. The Eastern National Forests Interpretive Association (ENFIA) is a non-profit association that aids and promotes the historical, scientific, and educational activities of the USDA Forest Service. This activity book was made possible through grants and partnership agreements with AFHA AmeriCorps, ENFIA, and USDA Forest Service. Archaeology is the study of material culture left behind by people from the past. Material culture are things created or used by people, like stone tools, a glass bottle, or even an entire building. Archaeologists look for archaeological sites to try to answer questions about the past. A site is where artifacts, features, or ecofacts are grouped together in an area. This means people were in that area in the past, and it’s up to the archaeologist to figure out what they were doing there. Sometimes archaeologists find things that can’t be easily collected or are part of the environment past peoples used. These things are called features. Features are often large, like the foundation of a house, or difficult to collect from the site, like an ashy campfire ring. 2021 Lindenfest Parade Information and Application
FALL Back to Normal June 30th, 2021 Dear Parade Enthusiasts, Let's “Fall back to normal” after these past two years. We have all been through a whirlwind of a pandemic and are all itching to get back into our routines. As we welcome normalcy, we welcome Lindenfest. Celebration has now come where we can be together as a community again and create new memories. This will be our 37th Lindenfest this year and it will be held October 1-3, 2021. We kick off the festival with live music and food vendors on Friday night. Our annual parade will take place at 10am on Saturday, October 2nd with the theme “Fall-ing back to normal”. Later on Saturday, come to the Mayors Auction and listen to more live music. On Sunday, join us for the popular Battle of the Bands at noon. Come in your football gear for the Bears vs. Lions game at noon and the Packers vs. Steelers game at 3pm which will be playing at the fest. Join us all weekend for delicious food, a Carnival midway, BINGO, live music, and much more. Your parade entry might feature some hay barrels, scarecrows, pumpkins, and leaves. You can dress up in halloween costumes such as the classics, dracula, frankenstein’s monster, the mummy, ghosts, and zombies. You can use fall themed cars, like a ghost busters vehicle. Keep it colorful, festive, and most importantly; have fun with it! The parade route will step off from Country Place & Sand Lake Rds. The parade will proceed West on Sand Lake Rd. -

Shaftel Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract PARRISH, JORDAN G., M.A., August 2017, Film Studies The Undead Subject of Lost Decade Japanese Horror Cinema Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz This thesis argues that Japanese Horror films released around the turn of the twenty- first century define a new mode of subjectivity: “undead subjectivity.” Exploring the implications of this concept, this study locates the undead subject’s origins within a Japanese recession, decimated social conditions, and a period outside of historical progression known as the “Lost Decade.” It suggests that the form and content of “J- Horror” films reveal a problematic visual structure haunting the nation in relation to the gaze of a structural father figure. In doing so, this thesis purports that these films interrogate psychoanalytic concepts such as the gaze, the big Other, and the death drive. This study posits themes, philosophies, and formal elements within J-Horror films that place the undead subject within a worldly depiction of the afterlife, the films repeatedly ending on an image of an emptied-out Japan invisible to the big Other’s gaze. -
