Trend forecasting had been regarded as a driving force of the fashion industry in determining the new fashion trends in fabric, colour and style. There is a dearth of information on the utilisation and application of trend forecasting. There was a need to explore the application of trend forecasting within contemporary design and retail environments. Hence, the rationale of this investigation was to identify how and where trend forecasting is incorporated in the product development process. Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) provided the framework to the primary research. The process focussed on the trend forecasting agencies and how trend forecasting was used by the fashion industry. The concept of fast fashion and its role in changing the model of fashion trend forecasting was critically analysed working through the stages of SSM. Interview data and process mapping were used to establish theoretical models which were tested, refined and validated for the timescales and process used in seasonal and fast fashion contexts. The research was addressed within the context of the UK clothing sector. From an initial analysis of the issues, shortcomings were identified in the seasonal process. These were linked to the buyers and designers having limited communication and fragmented decision making during the range planning process. The ‘open to buy’ process conducted at the end of the range planning season to address ‘close to season’ fashion relies upon repeated orders and unplanned inputs, copied from their competitors. This is because it is difficult to design completely new garments for the required timeframe. In the fast fashion process, it was found the designers had no input into the ‘bought-in’ fashion range resulting in a lack of continuity of how the total range would appear. Fast fashion relies upon ‘bought-in’ fashion and the ‘open to buy’ process relies upon trends based on ‘current influences’ and repeat orders because it is quicker than producing completely new garments within a reduced timescale. The final phase of this research contributes to a new synthesis of information relating to trend forecasting in contemporary design, marketing and retailing environments. A critique iii of the theoretical models was carried out for areas not discussed before with trend forecasters, buyers and designers. These industry personnel explained how trend forecasting was used in the model stages, alternatives to trend forecasting, the process, timeline and how ‘bought-in’ fashion is used as a solution to fast fashion. This research has resulted in revised models where trend forecasting is successfully located within the seasonal and fast fashion product development. The crux of this research identified the consultation meetings and communication channels which were accurately located in the new models. The models document how key personnel interact, specifically the trend forecaster, the product line manager, the designer and the buyer. In the fast fashion model the ‘bought-in’ range is clearly distinguished from the seasonal range. The new models quantify the timeline for seasonal fashion, fast fashion and ‘open to buy’. The current fashion forecasting system is derived from seasonal fashion and therefore reliant on long lead times. The rise of fast fashion provided the opportunity to identify a taxonomy of models with a shortened time frame. The original contribution to knowledge lies in the seasonal and fast fashion models directly arising from this research, that would facilitate the key personnel involved in the fashion industry to incorporate in their new product development. Out of this, $356.8 billion (21.7%) was in banking and other financial services. While the EU has supported financial services inclusion in TTIP, in the US, Members of the Congress disagree whether or not to include financial services in these negotiations. Business groups on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Trans-Atlantic Business Council (TABC), support the inclusion of financial services in the negotiations. Against it are consumer organisations, like Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD) who have voiced fears that TTIP would deregulate the financial services or harmonise rules towards the lowest common denominator. In June 2014, Commissioner Barnier reiterated the need for a framework within the TTIP to handle differences between the EU and the US, but later the same month, U.S. Treasury Secretary restated that "financial regulatory cooperation should continue in existing and appropriate global fora". US fears a dilution of safeguards created with the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act . In July 2014 US financial services associations published a statement underlining the importance of including financial services in TTIP. In June a restricted document from 5 March was leaked: Regulatory Co-operation on Financial Regulation in TTIP (to be included to the EU proposal for services and investment chapter, Section VI – Financial services).

    Report on potentially trade restrictive measures 12 June 2009 Introduction and main findings This is the third report on new potentially trade restrictive measures planned or implemented by our trading partners in the face of the economic crisis. The information used in this report has been primarily gathered by European Commission Delegations / Market Access Teams in G-20 countries and other key markets through their local monitoring exercises1, as well as from business sources providing specific contributions. The report provides an overview of the data received since mid-March 2009. It shows that trade restrictive measures continue to be on the rise, including in some G20 members. Moreover, the types of measures identified have become more complex and diversified, notably when they are part of broader stimulus packages. Therefore, increased alertness, as well as political determination to use all opportunities to address the measures put in place so far, remains all the more necessary at this stage. The world-wide economic downturn has been dramatic since the start of the financial crisis last autumn. 2009 seems set to be the first year in which global trade will decline year-on-year since the early 1980s. Although more indications continue to emerge pointing to the gradual stabilisation of the financial sector (stock market indices, lower risk spread), the signals from the real economy continue to be at best mixed. Despite some evidence of a slowdown in the pace of decline, the evolution of exports and imports of all the major trading countries remains very negative. Moreover, the fact that unemployment continues to rise in most major economies, means that the global recovery is still not fully underway.

    Using Artificial Intelligence to Analyze Fashion Trends Mengyun (David) Shi Van Dyk Lewis Cornell University, Hearst Magazines [email protected] ABstract Analyzing fashion trends is essential in the fashion industry. Current fashion forecasting firms, such as WGSN, utilize the visual information from around the world to analyze and predict fashion trends. However, analyzing fashion trends is time-consuming and extremely labor intensive, requiring individual employees' manual editing and classification. To improve the efficiency of data analysis of such image-based information and lower the cost of analyzing fashion images, this study proposes a data-driven quantitative abstracting approach using an artificial intelligence (A.I.) algorithm. Specifically, an A.I. model was trained on fashion images from a large-scale dataset under different scenarios, for example in online stores and street snapshots. This model was used to detect garments and classify clothing attributes such as textures, garment style, and details for runway photos and videos. It was found that the A.I. model can generate rich attribute descriptions of detected regions and accurately bind the garments in the images. Adoption of A.I. algorithm demonstrated promising results and the potential to classify garment types and details automatically, which can make the process of trend forecasting more cost-effective and faster. Comfort in clothing can by physical, physiological and psychological, and the psychological comfort gained from clothing is identified in literature as under-researched. Psychological theory was explored, revealing individuals perform multiple identities, dependent on the reaction of others and filtered by previous, lived experience. Fashion was found to be a recognized method of communicating identity in the social space and research suggests the physical response to psychological constructs or meanings associated with certain garments can be used to change or enhance mood.

    Value in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Souvenir Art Sector Brendan Mahoney Doctorate of Philosophy University of Western Sydney 2011 © Brendan Mahoney, 2011 Abstract The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander souvenir art sector with its wide range of products has a long and significant history and is economically important within the industry. However, the full scope of this significance has not been adequately recognised in the academic literature. While the sector’s substantial economic contribution is acknowledged in some policy documents, these considerations are generally brief, with little analysis of any value the sector might generate in the social and cultural spheres. This neglect of souvenir art is driven by two key factors: its low status in the social hierarchy of the arts (Bourdieu, 1984), and the difficulty of finding analytical tools capable of assessing the complexities of the sector without falling into assumptions about the cultural value and ‘authenticity’ of souvenir art. In an attempt to redress this, the thesis develops both a theoretical framework that aims to adequately capture the social, cultural and economic significance of the sector, and analytical tools that cover the broad set of discourses that comprise the subject. As such, I have adapted the insights of modern and critical political economy theories to analyse the distribution of economic capital, and broadened these theories to encompass Pierre Bourdieu’s (1984) concepts of social and cultural capital. This combination of theories forms a broad-ranging theoretical framework that accommodates economic capital and the qualitative discursive constructions that inform amounts of social and cultural capital within the same system.

But the trave' ^^ early days was largely unconscious and rather a simple affair ^^^^ ^^^ sophisticated travel of the modern days. The main moti^® ^^i" ^^® travel in the ancient time was trade and commerce but in ^^^ present scenario, recreation, enjoyment, relaxation have taken ^he place of trade and commerce. The invention o^ money and the increased development of trade and commerce i^ about 4000 B.C. marks the beginning of the modern era of travel a""^ tourism. Romans have the honour of being the first ones to start ^^^ phenomenon of travel, as they had good communication systeni a"d their empire was highly secured and they had very good netwo'''^ ^^ roads. Besides this Romans even had 1 tourist literature giving details about the routes, distance and journey time on horses.
