  • Thats My Fun Day Aug 25 2019 Isaiah 58
THAT’S MY FUN DAY UNION HILL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF DENVILLE AUGUST 25, 2019 ISAIAH 58: 9B-14 Several months ago, I was waiting for an elevator somewHere and music was playing in the background. THe song was “Eternal Flame,” one of the biggest Hits from the 1980s all girl pop group THe Bangles. Waiting for that elevator was a lady wHo, ever so faintly, was singing along. Surprise!: Your pastor never learned not to talk to strangers. WHen the doors opened and we got on the elevator, I observed, “You were singing along. WHy did you stop?” PerHaps embarrassed at Having been Heard, sHe quickly replied, “OH, no, I wasn’t singing.” “UH, yes you were. Eternal Flame by the Bangles. 80s classic.” “No, really, I wasn’t,” sHe insisted. Nice voice. Maybe not Susanna Hoffs, but good enougH for the elevator. Like Peter in the courtyard, sHe was determined to deny singing at least until the cock crowed. THere is no sHame in enjoying THe Bangles’ music. I mean, it’s not like I caugHt Her as sHe decided to “Walk Like an Egyptian.” Still, the sound of the song reminded me of Having Had a group poster on my wall at college, and appreciating another band that used Rickenbacker guitars, singing they were “going down to Liverpool to do nothing.” THeir other most popular song of the time was “Manic Monday,” the lament of being too busy, running late, and Having one thing after another someHow go wrong. Maybe I liked it because it seemed to give voice to my conviction that life was one long socially awkward moment someHow spread out over time by God! For all the angst of the work-week stress, the cHorus Heralded the longed-for utopian alternative: Just another Manic Monday; wish it were Sunday: That’s my fun day.

  • Lead a Normal Life
1: Lead A Normal Life “My family arrived in this country from Spain at the time of the Armada, and the story goes we were adopted by Cornish peasants . .” Peter Gabriel, 1974 “My dad is an electrical engineer, inventor type, reserved, shy, analytical, and my mum’s more instinctive, she responds by the moment – music is her big thing. And I’ve got both.” Peter Gabriel, 2000 HEN Peter Gabriel spoke of rather trusting a ‘country man than a Wtown man’ in Genesis’ 1974 song ‘The Chamber Of 32 Doors’, he could well have been talking about his own roots. For in his 63 years (at the time of writing), Gabriel has spent less than a decade living in a city. Although he keeps a residence in West London, Gabriel lives in rustic splendour at his home by his Real World studios in Box near Bath in Wiltshire, which echoes the rural idyll of his childhood in the Surrey countryside. The physical roots of his life could be a metaphor for his semi-detached relationship with showbusiness; near enough, yet far away. Surrey is less than an hour from London and his residence now is less than 15 minutes from the bustling city centre of Bath. He can get into the middle of things easily when he needs to, yet he remains far enough removed. It is not dissimilar to his relationship with the mainstream of popular music. Whenever Gabriel has neared the big time (or indeed, ‘Big Time’, his 1986 hit single) he has been there just enough to receive acclaim and at times, stellar sales, before retreating back to the anonymous comfort of the margins.

  • Exploring Lesbian and Gay Musical Preferences and 'LGB Music' in Flanders
Observatorio (OBS*) Journal, vol.9 - nº2 (2015), 207-223 1646-5954/ERC123483/2015 207 Into the Groove - Exploring lesbian and gay musical preferences and 'LGB music' in Flanders Alexander Dhoest*, Robbe Herreman**, Marion Wasserbauer*** * PhD, Associate professor, 'Media, Policy & Culture', University of Antwerp, Sint-Jacobsstraat 2, 2000 Antwerp ([email protected]) ** PhD student, 'Media, Policy & Culture', University of Antwerp, Sint-Jacobsstraat 2, 2000 Antwerp ([email protected]) *** PhD student, 'Media, Policy & Culture', University of Antwerp, Sint-Jacobsstraat 2, 2000 Antwerp ([email protected]) Abstract The importance of music and music tastes in lesbian and gay cultures is widely documented, but empirical research on individual lesbian and gay musical preferences is rare and even fully absent in Flanders (Belgium). To explore this field, we used an online quantitative survey (N= 761) followed up by 60 in-depth interviews, asking questions about musical preferences. Both the survey and the interviews disclose strongly gender-specific patterns of musical preference, the women preferring rock and alternative genres while the men tend to prefer pop and more commercial genres. While the sexual orientation of the musician is not very relevant to most participants, they do identify certain kinds of music that are strongly associated with lesbian and/or gay culture, often based on the play with codes of masculinity and femininity. Our findings confirm the popularity of certain types of music among Flemish lesbians and gay men, for whom it constitutes a shared source of identification, as it does across many Western countries. The qualitative data, in particular, allow us to better understand how such music plays a role in constituting and supporting lesbian and gay cultures and communities.
