Blas- tenia scabrosa is a new combination supported by molecular data. Blastenia scabrosa, Caloplaca fuscorufa and Flavoplaca havaasii are new to Russia. Blastenia scabrosa is also new to the Caucasus Mts and Sweden. Detailed morphological measurements of the Russian specimens of these species are provided. Caloplaca exsecuta, C. grimmiae and C. sorocarpa are new to the Murmansk region. The taxonomic position of C. alcarum is briefly discussed. Introduction Although the Murmansk region is one of the best studied regions of Russia in terms of lichen diversity, there are numerous reports in recent literature of new discoveries there (e.g. Fadeeva et al. 2013; Konoreva 2015; Melechin 2015; Urbanavichus 2015). Several localities in the northwest of the Murmansk region, mainly on the Pechenga Tundra Mountains and the Rybachy Peninsula, were visited in 2013 and 2015. -

Its overall objective is to improve our understanding of circum-Arctic coastal dynamics as a function of environmental forcing, coastal geology and cryology and morphodynamic behavior. The fourth IASC-sponsored ACD workshop was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on November 10-13, 2003. Participants from Canada (7), Germany (7), Great Britain (2), the Netherlands (1), Norway (1), Russia (32), Ukraine (1) and the United States (8) attended. During the first part of the workshop, 63 papers dealing with regional and/or circum-Arctic coastal dynamics were presented. Based on the material presented, five thematic working groups were identified: (1) GIS working group to develop of a circum-Arctic coastal GIS system, (2) coastal permafrost working group to discuss processes involved in the transition of onshore to offshore permafrost, (3) biogeochemistry working group with the focus on transport and fate of eroded material (4) biodiversity working group to initiate planning of an Arctic Coastal Biodiversity research agenda, (5) environmental data working group to discuss coastal dynamics as a function of environmental forcing. -

About half of the region’s 737,700 square kilometers lies above the Arctic Circle. The region’s landscape is domi- nated by alpine and arctic tundra, although small larch, pine, birch, poplar, and willow trees can grow in the valleys of larger rivers. Numerous rare and endangered species inhabit the Chukotsky Autonomous Okrug. D. Meyer ([email protected]) 10 Abstract. Little is known about the climate evolution on the Kamchatka Peninsula during the last deglaciation as existing climate records do not reach beyond 12 ka BP. In this study, a summer-temperature record for the past 20 ka is presented. Branched Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraethers, terrigenous biomarkers suitable for continental air temperature reconstructions, were analyzed in a sediment core from the western continental margin off Kamchatka/marginal Northwest Pacific (NW Pacific). The record reveals that summer temperatures on Kamchatka during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) 15 equaled modern. We suggest that strong southerly winds associated with a pronounced North Pacific High pressure system over the subarctic NW Pacific accounted for the warm conditions. A comparison with outputs from an Earth System Model reveals discrepancies between model and proxy-based reconstructions for the LGM-temperature and atmospheric circulation in the NW Pacific realm. The deglacial temperature development is characterized by abrupt millennial-scale temperature oscillations. -

525 ARTICLE Finnish botanists and mycologists in the Arctic1 Henry Väre Abstract: Finnish botanists and mycologists have studied Arctic areas and timberline regions since the beginning of the 18th century. Most expeditions to the Kola Peninsula were made between 1800 and 1917 and until 1945 to Lapponia petsamoënsis on the western rim of the Kola Peninsula. Since those years, these areas have been part of the Soviet Union or Russia. Svalbard and Newfoundland and Labrador have been studied repeatedly as well, Svalbard since the 1860s and Newfoundland and Labrador since the 1930s. This article focus- es on Finnish collections. These are deposited in the herbaria of Helsinki, Turku, and Oulu universities, except materials from the Nordenskiöld expeditions, which were mainly deposited in Stockholm. Concerning the Kola Peninsula, collections at Helsinki are the most extensive. The exact number of specimens is not known, but by rough estimation, the number is about 60 000, with an additional 110 000 observations included in the data- base. These expeditions have provided material to describe 305 new taxa to science, viz. 47 algae, 78 bryophytes, 25 fungi, 136 lichens, and 19 vascular plants. This number is an underestimate, as many new species have been described in several separate taxonomic arti- cles. At least 63 persons have contributed to making these collections to Finnish herbaria. Of those, 52 are of Finnish nationality. Key words: bryophytes, fungi, vascularplants, Finnish, Arctic. Quaternary Science Reviews, 53, 72-87. doi: 10.1016/j.quascirev.2012.08.004 http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277379112003046 1 Abstract During various periods of Late Quaternary glaciation, small ice-sheets, -caps, -fields and valley glaciers, occupied the mountains and uplands of Far NE Russia (including the Verkhoyansk, Suntar-Khayata, and Chersky Mountains; the Kolyma-Anyuy and Koryak Highlands; and much of the Kamchatka and Chukchi peninsulas). Here, the margins of former glaciers across this region are constrained through the comprehensive mapping of moraines from remote sensing data (Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images; ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM2); and Viewfinder Panorama DEM data). A total of 8414 moraines are mapped, and this record is integrated with a series of published age-estimates (n = 25), considered to chronologically-constrain former ice-margin positions. Geomorphological and chronological data are compiled in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to produce ‘best estimate’ reconstructions of ice extent during the global Last Glacial Maximum (gLGM) and, to a lesser degree, during earlier phases of glaciation. -
