The term “commercial” in the context of theater production refers to the intention to have a Broadway production as a for-profit venture. Frequently producers chose designers and creatives with an established track record of creating work of “Broadway Standard” which refers to perceived production value. The most common arrangements between producers and designers to ensure their continued involvement are a right of first refusal agreement or contractual terms that tie the designer’s involvement with a show to that of the director.
