History was made on Saturday last week when the Mercury Bay Senior A Marlins rugby team became for the first time ever the sole holders of the McClinchy Cup by beating Thames 12 - 10 in the 2021 Thames Valley Rugby Union club championship final. It was only the third time that the Mercury Bay Senior A team reached the final. With unrelenting wind and rain, the game was played in the most difficult circumstances imaginable. In 2015, the Bay shared the cup with Waihou after a draw in the final. This time was different. The cup will be displayed in the Mercury Bay trophy cabinet for a full 12 months. The emotion among players and supporters were visible when the final whistle went on Saturday. It was undoubtedly one of the proudest moment in the long history of a very proud club. It is envisaged that the project will take ten years to complete and will be conditional, as this first phase is, on external funding. The first Walk was chosen as it links two internationally Stage 1A of the Walk from Ferry Landing to the Blowhole significant tourists destinations of Cathedral Cove and Hot site south of Hahei, is funded through TCDC, DOC, Lotteries Water Beach, to showcase the beauty of the Coromandel and Significant Fund and Trust Waikato. Hot Water Beach Community Plan February 2006 – Issue 1 2 HOT WATER BEACH COMMUNITY PLAN Foreword Why develop a Community Plan for Hot Water Beach This Community Plan has been prepared to provide the framework for the management, protection and development of Hot Water Beach as a national icon and world famous tourist destination and as a place to live and holiday in. Hot Water Beach experiences a constant flow of visitors on a daily basis throughout the year and during the peak summer period there are regularly in excess of a hundred people gathered around the hot springs on the beach during low tide. This is in addition to the two to three hundred people who will have come to the beach to enjoy swimming in the surf and the beautiful beach. The novelty of the hot springs continues to draw increasing numbers of tourists throughout the year and there are occasions when as many as four tourist’s buses can be parked in the very small parking area. The impact of these visitors puts unique demands on services, the environment and land usage. Also, as in other parts of the Coromandel, subdivision of coastal land is becoming more prevalent and in some cases with negative environmental impacts.
