History was made on Saturday last week when the Mercury Bay Senior A Marlins rugby team became for the first time ever the sole holders of the McClinchy Cup by beating Thames 12 - 10 in the 2021 Thames Valley Rugby Union club championship final. It was only the third time that the Mercury Bay Senior A team reached the final. With unrelenting wind and rain, the game was played in the most difficult circumstances imaginable. In 2015, the Bay shared the cup with Waihou after a draw in the final. This time was different. The cup will be displayed in the Mercury Bay trophy cabinet for a full 12 months. The emotion among players and supporters were visible when the final whistle went on Saturday. It was undoubtedly one of the proudest moment in the long history of a very proud club. MARINE PLACE The Operational Plan for the West Coast Marine Reserves is progressing well. The document will be sent out for Iwi comment on during May. MONITORING The local West Coast monitoring team completed possum monitoring in the Hope and Stafford valleys. The Hope and Stafford valleys are one of the last places possums reached in New Zealand, arriving in the 1990’s. The Hope valley is treated regularly with aerial 1080, the Stafford is not treated. The aim is to keep possum numbers below 5% RTC in the Hope valley and the current monitor found an RTC of 1.3% +/- 1.2%. The Stafford valley is also measured as a non-treatment pair for the Hope valley, it had an RTC of 21.5% +/- 6.2%. Stands of dead tree fuchsia were noted in the Stafford valley, and few mistletoe were spotted. In comparison, the Hope Valley has abundant mistletoe and healthy stands of fuchsia. Mistletoe recruitment plots, FBI and 20x20m plots were measured in the Hope this year, and will be measured in the Stafford valley next year. THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF ROAD CLOSURES CAUSED BY NATURAL HAZARDS - CASE STUDY KAIKOURA By Joshua Clydesdale The New Zealand road network is vital to the economic wellbeing of the nation. The road network is, however, vulnerable to closure from a host of natural hazards. Road closures caused by natural hazards adversely effect the movement of freight and people between nodes. Link security is of particular importance to communities separated from major urban centres, particularly when alternative road links (if any) condition costly deviations. This research inv~stigates the vulnerability of the road network in the Kaikoura District to closure from natural hazards and estimates the costs of road network disruption for road-users and non-users.
