Since the passing of Vaudeville and the firm establishment of Director's musicals as America's most significant contribution to contemir rary theatre, Broadway had been recognized as the center of al Notes script development. Then in 1965, with the creation of the Na tional Endowment for the Arts and the proliferation of regional theatre, it all began to change. The focus of development moved, slowly at first, then faster and faster, out of New York and into the capable hands of regional theatres across the country This change, with the accessibility to greater diversity, took the quality and conceptualization of theatre to new heights. THE SECRET GARDEN is a product of this modern phenomenon. Originally developed and produced «it the Virginia Stage Com pany in 1989, THE SECRET GARDEN followed what has become the norm by moving the production to New York in April 1991 to grace the Broadway stage. 4i When the show opened on Broadway, an elitist attitude among Al Franklin New York critics prevailed. To this day they are not enthusiastic Director about productions arriving in the Big Apple from the hinterlands and do their best to discourage these regional productions. The opening was blasted with reviews screaming, "numbingly bad," "nothing is worth remembering" and "the music is never more than dull." But no one can tell an audience what they want and tickets kept selling so the production stayed open.

10 By the end of 1991, the critics had changed their tune. THE SECRET GARDEN, winning three Tony .Awards and eventually playing 728 '- performances on Broadway, garnered press notices of a different sort: "the only worthwhile American musical of the year," "first- rate examples of lushly orchestrated songs" and "the bewitching musical still presses all (he right buttons." The new idea from Virginia Stage Company had reached American Classic status. THE SECRET GARDEN is based on the popular novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is the story of 10-year-old Mary Lennox who, orphaned by a cholera epidemic in India, is sent to live with her wealthy, reclusive uncle in England. Mary searches for

11 The Fort Wayne Civic Theatre relies on the energy, enthusiasm and expertise of our board of directors. Their commitment to OUj organization is one of the many reasons that the Civic Theatre " enjoys a large, responsive and supportive audience in Fort Wayne. Our board members strive to maintain the high level of respect and admiration that the theatre currently enjoys. Here is your opportu nity to acquaint yourselves with these fine individuals. Spotlight On: Robert Anderson is the president of the Civic Theatre board of Our Board directors and the executive vice president of Norwest Bank. A native of Fort Wayne, Bob has been a supporter of the Civic Theatre Members for many years and is very proud of the membership growth the theatre has experienced during his term on the board. Richard became famil iar with the Civic board while participating in Leadership Fort Wayne. For this brief introduction, he confided that he had always wanted to know how to juggle and walk on his hands, although not necessarily at the same time.

Lisa Boyd is the president of the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre Guild and retains a seat on our board of directors. The Civic Theatre Guild works to benefit the theatre in a number of areas and Lisa enjoys having an active role in that process. Lisa graduated from Indiana University with a manage ment degree and enjoys reading and gardening. An Indianapolis native, Lisa and her husband, Mark, are expecting their first baby in March.
