These are things which he has thought Lorella (Lauri) Boren, Jonathan Bowman, about as a child.” —Albert Einstein Jon Frank, Ken Inoue, Fritz King, John Lindgren, Adrienne McEntee, Leann Nester, David Nilsson, I like to joke that, as a child, I worried that I wasn’t normal but as I grew Constance Wilkinson older, I worried that I was. I was a “special” child raised in a disciplined military family. My father wasn’t just an Army officer—but a war hero—a Medal of Honor recipient played by Greg Kinnear in the movie “We Were Soldiers.” In a family of crew cuts, spit-shined shoes, and hospital corners, I stood out even as a child. I think I first realized I wasn’t normal when my dad was stationed in Bangkok, Thailand. The year was 1969, and I was in 4th grade. We had arrived just in time for the Christmas holiday and I was determined to make it special despite the sweltering heat and oppressive humidity. In a room full of row after row of identical flip top desks, I joyfully decorated mine–wrapping the top in festive holiday paper, draping garland, and finishing it off with its own little green area rug. The fact that no one else was decorating didn’t even cross my mind. Of course, my 4th grade classmates didn’t fully appreciate my efforts and I was teased mercilessly. As I grew older, it was in the music of Stephen Schwartz that I found particular comfort.
