AN EXTRAORDINARY ENDING TO AN UNFORGETTABLE YEAR! CELEBRATING THE HISTORIC CLASS OF 2020! PCTVS Bulldogs are known for their perseverance and dedication to achieving their dreams. This year was no different as we tackled unimaginable obstacles and emerged stronger than ever!
The much-anticipated milestone of graduation was in full swing in a unique way for the Class of 2020. Despite an unconventional end to the school year, nothing could stop the PCTVS community from celebrating our graduates’ accomplishments! Two memorable Commencement ceremonies were held to honor the graduating class of more than 835 students: first, a unique virtual video was created which spotlighted each graduate and featured speeches by PCTVS administrators who commended graduates on their successes. Valedictorian Michael Calixto, Salutatorian Connor Wang, and Class of 2020 Co-Presidents Eboni Bugg and Sahil Shah also gave emotional speeches and congratulated their fellow graduates. The video’s premiere on June 16th was viewed by students, family members, staff and valued members of the PCTVS community who remotely joined in on the graduation festivities. Continued on page 4

Congratulations are in order to PCTI’s new Principal, Mr. Antonio Garcia! Prior to joining the Bulldog family, Mr. Garcia was an administrator in the Passaic and Teaneck Public School Districts. With 18 years of experience in education, Mr. Garcia has not only successfully held various leadership roles in school settings, but also supported athletic programs by coaching wrestling for over fifteen years. Throughout his impressive educational career, Mr. Garcia has advanced curricula and facilitated optimal student success. His educational philosophy is rooted in keeping cutting-edge education at the forefront of instruction, prioritizing professional development and positioning students for excellence in their future endeavors. Mr. Garcia is committed to fostering a supportive school environment in which all students can thrive academically and socially. He has an extensive education including a Bachelor of Science degree from Montclair State University and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Kean University. Plus, Mr. Garcia is currently pursuing post-graduate work from Harvard University. He resides in Fair Lawn with his wife and two daughters who are eager to celebrate our famous Bulldog spirit! Mr. Garcia’s positive outlook and welcoming personality are sure to bring a smile to Bulldogs’ faces, and we are so excited to welcome him to the PCTI family!
I am enthusiastic to join this dynamic community and build collaborative and productive relationships with all stakeholders. By supporting and guiding all the innovative CTE and academic programs, athletic teams, and student { events at PCTI, I strive to continue to make PCTI an amazing place to learn, teach, work, and lead. In challenging times, the importance of community is extremely clear. This rings true for our PCTVS family during the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, and we are emerging stronger than ever! We wish to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to all the dedicated teachers, staff, and administrators who worked diligently to ensure a smooth transition during distance learning and prioritize students’ successes. Although we were unable to finish the school year together on campus, students and staff continued to work diligently and make our district proud! Now, we are prepared to tackle any future challenges that may arise through collaboration and our shared sense of community pride! As we navigate the road back to school in September, our district will continue to be like “no place else” as we band together to provide an exceptional educational experience for all. Thank you again to all valued PCTVS community members who have exemplified our relentless Bulldog spirit and continued to shine brightly even in the face of adversity.

The Bulldog family may not have been together on campus, but school spirit stayed strong as students and staff continued to be upstanding members of our local community. Between fundraising initiatives, serving on the front lines, and donating essential supplies and meals for healthcare heroes, the PCTVS community rallied to help those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you to all of our noble Bulldog volunteers!

Donating To Those In Need PCTVS was eager to donate a large array of medical supplies including face masks, medical gowns and synthetic gloves from the schools’ medical arts, biomedical, and science programs to the COVID-19 testing center at William Paterson University.
TECHLIFE / SUMMER 2020 3 Back on campus during the week of June 23rd, excitement was in the air as graduates enjoyed a historic and memorable “drive-through” graduation ceremony. One by one, each graduate’s car proceeded through the PCTVS campus to one of five beautifully decorated graduation stages which were decked out with “Class of 2020” banners, flowers, and specially designed balloon displays. Here, students were given the full, personalized graduation experience as they were introduced individually and received their diploma onstage. Family members and PCTI administrators cheered as graduates marched across the stage while a photographer was on hand to capture each student’s special moment.
The historic Class of 2020 will go down in the PCTVS history books as a tenacious and optimistic graduating class that triumphed over challenging circumstances. Our resilient Bulldog family has emerged stronger than ever and allowed us to truly appreciate the value of our close-knit community. The recognition, which honors top-performing high schools in financial education, comes as a result of students’ outstanding scores on W!SE’s national standardized Financial Literacy High Honors at Certification Test. Congratulations to the members of the Academy of Finance for achieving this State Competition! honor! Despite this year’s abbreviated schedule of SkillsUSA events, the PCTI chapter achieved a great number of successes and won multiple awards through state competitions! Both students in PCTI’s School of Education & Human Services program, Misty Skupienski DANCING was named a Gold medal winner and Jennifer Castro took home the Silver medal in the “Early Childhood Education” section of the statewide competition. Additionally, Kyle Guell from the “ON POINTE”! School of Automotive Technology earned a Gold medal in the competition’s “Auto Maintenance” category and will receive an incredible $10,000 scholarship to the Universal Technical Institute! Additional accolades were awarded to Sabrina Valderrama, who was recognized as the SkillsUSA State Officer for New Jersey. Meanwhile, PCTI was honored to receive the “Quality Chapter Award” for the successful completion of the Chapter Excellence Program (CEP). Congratulations to all!
Jazz Band is Hitting All the Right Notes!
The PCTI Jazz Band is rejoicing to the tune of success! The band was selected as a State Finalist of the New Jersey Association of Jazz Education (NJAJE) State High School Jazz Festival! At the preliminary round of the State High School Jazz Festival sponsored by NJAJE, the PCTI Jazz Band earned the Best Rhythm Section award for their outstanding performance. Additionally, Gabriela Hernandez, Noelia Figuereo, and Andres Guerra received an honorable mention in the competition as well. Congratulations to all members of the band for this fantastic achievement! Brianna Izquierdo, a Class of 2020 graduate of the dance program at Passaic County Technical Institute’s (PCTI) School of Performing Arts, has been selected as a recipient of the New Jersey Governor’s Awards in Arts Education (NJGAAE) Student Award for Artistic Excellence and Leadership in Dance! In recognition of her outstanding talent in dance, Brianna has been invited to attend the NJGAAE Ceremony at the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton, NJ.

In keeping with the annual tradition of honoring our graduating seniors at the end of the academic year, PCTVS was proud to premiere the first-ever virtual Senior Awards and Athletic Awards ceremonies! These virtual Awards Nights, alongside the Class of 2020 Graduation video and informative Freshman Welcome presentation videos, are all featured on our district’s YouTube channel for continued enjoyment. The historic Senior Awards ceremony recognized graduating seniors who have earned prestigious scholarships for their academic excellence, exceptional character education, and community involvement. The PCTI Education Foundation generously selected 8 deserving students at random to receive brand new Apple iPads to support their continued educational success! The 7th Annual Senior Student-Athlete Awards Night invited more than 75 students, their families, and coaches to attend a unique virtual ceremony which celebrated our talented Bulldog athletes’ athletic achievements. Seniors were honored for their athletic prowess in distinctions including the NJSIAA Scholar Athlete Award, Big North Conference Student-Athlete, PCCA Student-Athlete Nomination, and more.
