The band is considered a major influence on thrash metal and extreme metal in general. In 1982 they released their eponymous album “Black Metal” and at the same time laid the seeds for a new genre that would become big, especially in Norway. You most likely wouldn't have bands like Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth either, if it was not for the groundbreaking music made by Venom in the early 80s. Venom is still going strong and we can't wait to have them with us at Inferno Metal Festival 2020! Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Warrior, from Celtic Frost and Triptykon, started back in 1982 a band called Hellhammer. The band existed for a mere two years, from May 1982 to May 1984. During this time, the band released three demos, one 12-inch EP, and two songs on the legendary "Death Metal" compilation album. The band disbanded when Hellhammer members Tom Gabriel Warrior and Martin Eric Ain went on to form Celtic Frost. Warrior has made it clear; Hellhammer will never return and will never be reformed. Still the music exists, and it is an extremely important part of Tom G. Warrior's life and extreme metal in general – widely credited as pioneers of extreme metal. Even if Hellhammer is a band of the past, Warrior had an urge to perform the classics on stage. This is when Triumph of Death became an reality. Triumph of Death is a band solely dedicated to perform the legendary music from Hellhammer.

Baroni Keywords: metal, popular music, popular culture, religion, subculture, Hawai‘i 2 Abstract The island of Oahu is home to probably the most ethnically diverse metal scene in the United States. Contemporary Hawai`i prides itself on being a “model of multiculturalism” free of the racism and ethnic strife that is endemic to the continent; however, beneath this superficial openness and tolerance exist deeply felt class, ethnic, and racial tensions. The metal scene in Hawai`i experiences these conflicting impulses towards inclusion and exclusion as profoundly as any other aspect of contemporary Hawaiian culture, but there is a persistent hope within the metal scene that subcultural identity can triumph over such tensions. Complicating this process is the presence of white military personnel, primarily born and raised on the continental United States, whose cultural attitudes, performances of masculinity, and conception of metal culture differ greatly from that of local metalheads. The misunderstandings, hostilities, bids for subcultural capital, and attempted bridge-building that take place between metalheads in Hawai‘i constitute a subculturally specific attempt to address anxieties concerning the presence of the military, the history of race and racism in Hawai`i, and the complicated, often conflicting desires for both openness and exclusivity that exist within local culture.

Although this infamous treatise served as the official chronicle and apologia of the 1692 witch trials, and excerpts from Wonders of the Invisible World are widely anthologized, no annotated critical edition of the entire work has appeared since the nineteenth century. Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.
