Spend your first night in the stunning Paro Valley at a Bhutanese-style resort on the edge of a forest just outside the town. Wake up to breath-taking views of Himalayan peaks in your rustic villa. The spacious wood- clad yoga studio looks out on one of Bhutan’s highest mountains, inspiring daily yoga practice. We travel onwards to Haa, a picturesque valley off the beaten track, and a favourite peaceful experience of life in the Himalayas. Effortlessly charming, Haa is an ideal base for a short day hike, daily yoga practice, and visits to small local temples. Stay in a charming family run converted farmhouse adorned with hand painted murals and an atmospheric shrine room. From Haa we drive across to Thimpu, Bhutan’s capital city and the only capital in the world without traffic lights! Spend two nights exploring this fascinating little city and take a day hike to Cheri Monastery, a place of pilgrimage for many Bhutanese. We continue our journey via the scenic Dochu La Pass to Punakha which served as Bhutan’s capital for 300 years, and stay in Wangdue Phodrang. Walk to Chimi Lhakhang Monastery, one of the most revered temples in Bhutan and visit Rinchengang village. Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, an ancient monastery built in 1637, and arguably the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. Continue to the Nalanda Buddhist Institute and Sangchen Dorji Lhendrub Choling Nunnery. Returning to Paro, we take some time to relax into our yoga practice and soak up the joyful Bhutanese lifestyle. On our final day, before leaving Bhutan, we hike up to the grand Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), Bhutan’s most famous landmark. A hike up through blue pines, passing water-powered prayer wheels, leads you to this most holy site. This ancient monastery clings miraculously to a sheer cliff, rising 1,000 metres from the valley floor. The views are magnificent over the Paro Valley and the only sounds to be heard are prayer flags blowing in the wind. It’s the perfect end to a journey through the peaceful Dragon Kingdom. Your teacher: Chrissy has been teaching yoga classes and retreats for the past 12 years and began to practice yoga over 25 years ago. She is trained in Dru Yoga, Gentle Somatic Yoga, the Yoga of Sound, and Yoga Nidra and she is also a Chakradance Facilitator. Chrissy is passionate about yoga that is inclusive, friendly and accessible to people of all body shapes and sizes, ages and abilities. She creates an experience for her students that is guided by her Buddhist practice of Metta, or compassionate loving kindness, so her classes can be both beautifully centering, and calming but also energizing and fun! Visit Paro Dzong, the National Museum and the famous Nyamai Zam Bridge. Altitude: 2,250 m Overnight: Paro Day 2: 16th October HAA Drive to the beautiful valley of Haa and visit the black and white temples. Your accommodation is a rustic lodge where you can take hot stone baths (optional). Driving time: 3 hrs Altitude: 2,700 m Overnight: Haa Day 3: 17th October HAA Wake up to soft morning light on the picturesque valley around you, and go on a day hike through the forest. Altitude: 2,700 m Overnight: Haa Day 4: 18th October THIMPU Drive to Thimpu and visit the Memorial Chorten, Buddha Point and Trashicho dzong. Driving time: 4 hrs Altitude: 2,350 m Overnight: Thimpu Day 5: 19th October THIMPU Day hike to Cheri Monastery, followed by visits to the Textile Museum, Post Office and the school of Traditional Arts and Crafts. Driving time: 1 hr Altitude: 2,350 m Overnight: Thimpu Day 6: 20th October WANGDUE PHODRANG Drive to Wangdue Phodrang via the Dochula Pass. Visit Chimi Lhakhang Temple and Rinchengang Village.     6 Dzongs of Bhutan - Architecture and Significance of These Fortresses Nestled in the great Himalayas, Bhutan has long been the significance of happiness and peace. The first things that come to one's mind when talking about Bhutan are probably the architectures, the closeness to nature and its strong association with the Buddhist culture. And it is just to say that a huge part of the country's architecture has a strong Buddhist influence. One such distinctive architecture that you will see all around Bhutan are the Dzongs, they are beautiful and hold a very important religious position in the country. Let's talk more about the Dzongs in Bhutan. What are the Bhutanese Dzongs? Wangdue Phodrang Dzong in Bhutan (Source) Dzongs can be literally translated to fortress and they represent the majestic fortresses that adorn every corner of Bhutan. Dzong are generally a representation of victory and power when they were built in ancient times to represent the stronghold of Buddhism. They also represent the principal seat for Buddhist school responsible for propagating the ideas of the religion. Importance of Dzongs in Bhutan Rinpung Dzong in Paro, home to the government administrative offices and monastic body of the district (Source) The dzongs in Bhutan serve several purposes. The two main purposes that these dzongs serve are administrative and religious purposes. A part of the building is dedicated for the administrative purposes and a part of the building to the monks for religious purposes. Generally, this distinction is made within the same room from where both administrative and religious activities are conducted.

    In Partnership with Asia Academic Experience, LLC A CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL ADVENTURE: HIKING IN VIETNAM AND BHUTAN OCTOBER 8-22, 2018 Ann Highum and Jerry Freund are ready to travel again with a group of adventuresome and curious people, in 2018. They are anxious to share their love for SE Asia and its people, culture, history and natural beauty. Bhutan and Vietnam are fascinating countries--safe for travel, culturally fascinating, and historically important. Bhutan, famous for its “happiness index” has been open for tourism for many years, but not so welcoming. They are working to change that, and since their tourism industry is now highly regulated and well managed, our colleague Lana has negotiated a fascinating tour. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to offer this tour to hardy souls who want a unique adventure in both the northern part of Vietnam and then in Bhutan. There will, of course, be a focus on learning on this tour, with local guest speakers and excellent local guides who will share their knowledge about each country with the group. The tour is also based on taking hikes in remarkable areas, interacting with different ethnic tribes to learn about their customs and cultures, staying in guesthouses in small villages, and experiencing each country more fully than is possible in other tours. It is important to note that many of the hiking experiences will involve uneven terrain, long uphill climbs and up to 7 miles per hike. Altitude is also a factor, although the highest areas we would visit are in the range of 7-8000 feet.

    EXPLORING THE DRAGON KINGDOM The Essence of Bhutan 13 Nights and 14 Days No treks but plenty of good day hikes Day 1 BANGKOK TO PARO (8000 feet) Today is your flight to Bhutan. As we near Bhutan (and if the weather is clear), we can see the massive peaks of the eastern Himalaya, including Kanchenchunga (third highest mountain in the world) and Bhutan's holy mountain, Chomolhari. Once we’ve completed visa formalities we proceed through customs and immigration and meet our Bhutanese tour leader and drivers in the arrival gate. We drive for about 20 minutes to Zhiwaling Hotel where will be received with a Chipdrel Ceremony (an elaborate Traditional welcome procession). After settling into our comfortable hotel, we’ll drive a short distance up the valley to Drukyel Dzong, the ruined fortress that protected the Paro Valley from Tibetan armies during the 18th century. If the weather is clear, we might have a glimpse of the white pyramid of Chomolhari, rising over the end of the valley. Today being our first day, we will undergo this gentle 30 minutes hike around the ruined Dzong to acclimatize before we return to our hotel. By early evening we return to our hotel for a welcome dinner and a brief trip orientation session. Zhiwaling Hotel Day 2 PARO We have a full day to explore the Paro Valley. Our first stop in Paro is the Ta Dzong (National Museum), a circular fortress that once protected this valley from Tibetan invasion. The impressive watchtower can be seen above Paro Rimpung Dzong, and it commands sweeping views of the valley below.

    BHUTAN 2021-2022 LEGACY BUILDING Discovery expedition to the Soul of Happiness, in Bhutan WELCOME Come to Bhutan for an exploration into Gross National Happiness (GNH), a governing principle in The Kingdom in the Himalayas that measures happiness over product. The retreat will include talks with GNH experts, visits to symbolic Bhutanese spots such as the sacred Tiger’s Nest Monastery, and discussion with locals and other fellow tribe members about the elements that make for individual happiness and legacy building. While here, you’ll be able to learn first hand why and how the Fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, implemented GNH. And how GNH continues to help the Royal Government of Bhutan shape policies that attempt to create conditions that allow happiness to flourish for everybody.
