Patchwork Thinking Generate sixteen words from the class on their current topic:

 Write words on Post -It notes or cards

 Arrange in a 4X4 pattern on desk Challenge 1: Arrange the cards so that each one is similar in some way to the card next to it on the left & right. Challenge 2: Arrange so that each is now linked also to the one above and below Challenge 3: (for most able) Arrange the cards so that they are all logically linked with the cards that touch their corners as well.

6 x 6 grid with key words from a topic and 2 dice.

 Roll the dice twice to decide which two words you need to try to link

 If the student can link the two words then they colour them in.

 If they cannot link the words then they cannot colour them in

You can vary the task by creating the grid yourself or by asking the students to put their own key words

Developing Inclusive Practice at the Bulmershe School

Top Six Tips for Helping Students with SEN.

Making the following your normal practice will make you a fantastic teacher for students with SEN:  ‘Show and tell’ rather than just telling.  Keep listening short  Start with where the students are at.  Break large tasks down into a series of short steps with a visual checklist which can be ticked off.  Support reading and writing. (NEVER pick on a student with literacy Jill Maher difficulties to read aloud in class unless they volunteer.) SENCO Bulmershe School

Question generator  Find as many questions as you can on a subject  Use the Question Generator – select one word from each column to come up with a range of questions  Top five questions from each group  Swap questions with another group and prioritise them  Identify a question to answer and work out as a group what the answer might be  Spokesperson for each table stand up and share with the class Active Learning - Dr Andy Love Starters engage and motivate Arrival Activities  Information retrieval: use a textbook to find the meaning of three new words  List six subject-specific words met in the last lesson/topic or complete a word search  Match five definitions to five words (on board)  Make as many words as possible from just one long word  Picture task: spot the mistakes/hazards/uses, etc.  Graph task: describe the three sections of the graph to a neighbour  Tell a partner about three things that are important about a particular topic  Pick up a statement card as you enter the room and place on the most appropriately labelled board, e.g. statements about plants, animals or all living things  Make up a question about the new topic and put on the notice board  Sequence five statements (relating to a process) into the correct order

Base on a question from the last lesson? STARTERS are important because  They influence early levels of engagement and motivation  They help to inject a sense of pace and challenge  They create an expectation that pupils will think and participate in the lesson

Weakness http://classteaching.wordpress.com Pass the Buck A brilliant activity for groups of -3 4; lots of peer learning and assessment.  Get 4 similar yet different exam questions and photocopy them onto the top of an A4 or A3 sheet. Arrange the class into groups of 4 and give each member of the group a question. They have however long you want them to answer the question where it says Student 1 answer. After time is up the student must fold over the answer and pass it on to the person on their right. They then answer in Student 2 answer. This goes on until all questions have been attempted and the original question has arrived back to the original student.  This student unfolds the answer and sticks it onto some A3 paper. The student then highlights parts of the attempted answers that may be relevant to constructing the ‘perfect answer’. A mark scheme could then be provided to mark their answer and discuss the question with the rest of the group.

Recall on Demand In groups of 4 students , allocate each other a number 1-4  1 & 2 has an article and has to read it to 3 & 4  They hand over the texts to 3 &4 who askes them to recall on demand  Student swap roles

 Give students the ability to see themselves perform by providing them with automatic, instant or delayed visual feedback.  Start a dialogue with the support of the video images and make it easier for your students to understand your evaluation and comments  Break down activities, compare video clips and highlight technique development.

Creative use of ICT tools when teaching SEND students

' There are a number of very exciting enabling technologies available to support students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, (SEND). The tools support reading, writing and accessing information within the classroom.’

Values and Beliefs School Direct Initial Teacher Training with the Wokingham Secondary Federation

We have successfully trained 42 School Direct teachers in a wide range of subjects, during the academic year 2013-14. 70% achieved the top grade for teaching and 70% found employment within the Federation What our trainees said about School Direct

I thoroughly enjoyed the programme - School Direct is a great way to go into teaching. I have benefitted from “Training to be a teacher has been challenging a lot of support at school and at University ‘. at times, but it has been the most rewarding experience. I have really enjoyed being involved in the school community from day one and being treated as another member of staff. Visit out website http://wsh.wokingham.gov.uk/secondary- federation/school-direct/

“I’ve really enjoyed teaching in two different schools. Emmbrook and Piggott are both very good schools and their English departments are highly supportive, always available to answer questions and offer feedback.” Madeleine Lloyd

“I was able to secure a salaried position, which is extremely helpful as the school covers my university fees and also pays me as a member of staff. Teaching is a uniquely fulfilling job, a gratifying role of responsibility, and I cannot imagine myself doing anything else.”

Deborah. MacGregor - The Holt School

As a mother with 3 teenagers and having worked in business and Industry for over 20 years, I nervously took up the challenge of teaching. Nine months on I am delighted I took the plunge!

Clare Sandels—The Bulmershe School Chinese Teachers’ Return Visit

12 teachers from Luzhou High School in Sichuan, China, visited schools from the Secondary Federation for 10 days in July. They were introduced to Teresa May, the Home Secretary when she came to open Charvil Piggott Primary School with Hilary Winter.

Do you know of anyone who may be interested in spending a few months teaching English at the Luzhou High School in China? Our Chinese visitors engaged enthusiastically with all the opportunities Please link on this link for further we provided for them. They were very happy to join in with the lessons information: they saw at the Piggott, Emmbrook, Forest and Polehampton Schools. http:// www.teachenglishinchina.com/ index.aspx?id=1376

What did the Chinese Teachers learn from us?

We gained a lot of inspiration from our visit to your schools:  You combine entertainment and leaning so well that almost everyone I asked is happy to go to school.  You make the learning practical;  what’s more, you have a thorough method to help the students who have problems with study and you work hard to help them. Although it takes time and energy, it makes every student exploit his potential. You never give up any of them.  You have a strict standard for people to get the qualification of being a teacher . This is very important because it allows students to receive the best education.

Li Shasha—English Teacher Luzhou High School Common INSET Day 23rd February 2015 Curriculum Change AQA, Edexcel and OCR have all agreed to send their subject representatives to our conferences. You will be asked to identify the areas of subject knowledge you would like to develop and to feed in your ideas to the subject network meetings that will be held this term.
