Samuel Yellin Annotated Bibliography Andrews, Jack. Samuel Yellin, Metalworker. Philadelphia: Samuel Yellin Foundation, 1982(?). This essay is a reprinting of “The Anvil’s Ring”, and a detailed account of Yellin’s life and work. The author notes that much of Yellin’s life is sparsely documented, except for Yellin’s record keeping at the Arch Street shop in Philadelphia, which contained business records, correspondence, drawings for each project, and photographs of the work (sometimes before and after it left the shop). Reproduced in the publication are letters of recommendation from Cass Gilbert and Philip Sawyer; quotes from Yellin, his associates, and metalworkers in his employ; correspondences; and a resume. humanities Article Rewriting Universes: Post-Brexit Futures in Dave Hutchinson’s Fractured Europe Quartet Hadas Elber-Aviram Department of English, The University of Notre Dame (USA) in England, London SW1Y 4HG, UK; [email protected] Abstract: Recent years have witnessed the emergence of a new strand of British fiction that grapples with the causes and consequences of the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union. Building on Kristian Shaw’s pioneering work in this new literary field, this article shifts the focus from literary fiction to science fiction. It analyzes Dave Hutchinson’s Fractured Europe quartet— comprised of Europe in Autumn (pub. 2014), Europe at Midnight (pub. 2015), Europe in Winter (pub. 2016) and Europe at Dawn (pub. 2018)—as a case study in British science fiction’s response to the recent nationalistic turn in the UK. This article draws on a bespoke interview with Hutchinson and frames its discussion within a range of theories and studies, especially the European hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. It argues that the Fractured Europe quartet deploys science fiction topoi to interrogate and criticize the recent rise of English nationalism. It further contends that the Fractured Europe books respond to this nationalistic turn by setting forth an estranged vision of Europe and offering alternative modalities of European identity through the mediation of photography and the redemptive possibilities of cooking. In the Last Year Or So, Scholarship in American Literature Has Been
REVIEWS In the last year or so, scholarship in American Literature has been extended by the appearance of three exciting series which reassess, synthesize, and clarify the work and reputation of major American writers and literary groups. MASAJ begins with this issue reviews of representative titles in Twayne's United States Authors Series (Sylvia Bowman, Indiana University, General Editor); Barnes & Noble's American Authors and Critics Series (Foster Provost and John Mahoney, Duquesne University, General Editors); and The University of Minnesota Pamphlets on American Writers (William Van O'Connor, Allen Tate, Leonard Unger, and Robert Penn Warren, Editors), and will continue such reviews until the various series are completed. Twayne's United States Authors Series (TUSAS), (Hardback Editions) JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER. By Lewis Leary. New York: Twayne Pub lishers, Inc. 1961. $3.50. As a long overdue reappraisal, this book places Whittier squarely within the cultural context_of his age and then sympathetically, but objectively, ana lyzes his poetic achievement. Leary * s easy style and skillful use of quotations freshen the well-known facts of Whittier's life. Unlike previous biographers he never loses sight of the poet while considering Whittier's varied career as editor, politician and abolitionist. One whole chapter, "The Beauty of Holi ness ," presents Whittier1 s artistic beliefs and stands as one of the few extended treatments of his aesthetics in this century. Also Leary is not afraid to measure Whittier Ts limitations against major poets like Whitman and Emerson, and this approach does much to highlight Whittier's poetic successes. How ever, the book's real contribution is its illuminating examination of Whittier's artistry: the intricate expansion of theme by structure in "Snow-Bound," the tensions created by subtle Biblical references in "Ichabod, " and the graphic blending of legend and New England background in "Skipper Ireson's Ride." Even long forgotten poems like "The Cypress-Tree of Ceylon" reveal surprising poetic qualities. -

ENG 351 Lecture 8 1 Let’s look at Jack London. A moose didn’t fall on Jack London; he OD’d on morphine. Now, let’s talk about that, okay? ‘Cause they don’t tell you that in this book. He was 40 years old when he died and he wrote a lot. Shelves of Jack London. A friend of mine collects Jack London books and he has got one whole bookshelf practically full of it. I think the man wrote around 52 books in his short life, shortish life. In fact, a survey back in the early ‘90s of world readers, turns out that Jack London was the most popular American writer of them all. More popular than Mark Twain or Ernest Hemingway, or people that you would assume would be the most popular. And there are reasons for it. From the comments I heard in the hall when I came in here, it seemed like most everybody enjoyed these stories. I mean, they’re pretty gruesome and it’s man against nature and man against beast and man against himself, all the typical conflicts that we’re taught about when we learn to write. But it’s done in such a way that it’s very arresting. He was a Californian, born in San Francisco. His father was an itinerant astrologer. Now, you tell me what that is. I guess the guy goes from town to town, telling people’s charts. He left his mother when he found out she was pregnant with London. She married a man named London who legally adopted him, but London was never sure his entire life whether perhaps this man might’ve been his biological father, too. -

The Gilded Age
The Gilded Age Historian Allen Nevins, in The Emergence of Modern America, described the Gilded Age—the era between the end of the Civil War and the Beginning of World War I—as a “period of currency inflation, widespread speculation, overexpansion of industry, loud booming of dubious enterprises, base business and political morals, and flashy manners….” He was correct, but only partially. Greed, fraud, and selfishness were surely widespread, but there occurred also in this age the organization of labor, some regulation of the economy, and an expansion of education. If there were those guilty of gilding society’s face, there were also those who sought to break through the gilt façade to a harder, if darker, reality. Among this group were the writers of this series—Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Kate Chopin, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Jack London. When Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner published The Gilded Age: A Tale of To-day in 1873, they began with a mock apology for their treatment of: “an entirely ideal state of society… where there is no fever of speculation, no inflamed desire for sudden wealth, where the poor are all simple- minded and contented, and the rich are all honest and generous, where society is in a condition of primitive purity, and politics is the occupation of only the capable and the patriotic.” The sardonic social criticism that follows the preface aims to prick many falsehoods of the age. And with realism as a tool, many American writers took up just that aim. With William Dean Howells as its popular and influential spokesman, literary realism ranged from genteel to ruthless, and its targets of reform included a spectrum of social ills.
