IN A CHANGING ENVIRONMENT Elke Lambert June 2020 Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for master’s degree in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management PROMOTOR: Dr. Steven Degraer (UGhent; RBINS) CO-PROMOTOR: Dr. Bob Rumes (RBINS) SUPERVISOR: Jan Haelters (RBINS) ABSTRACT The stomach contents of 180 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded or bycaught along the Belgian coastline between 1997 and 2018 were analysed to reconstruct the diet and study the factors shaping their feeding ecology. This was investigated combining two techniques used in diet studies: population averages (i.e. diet indices) and analysis of individual variation in the diet through multivariate analysing techniques (nMDS and PERMANOVA). More than 25 fish and invertebrate prey taxa were identified, highlighting the broad prey spectrum that these generalist predators can feed on. However, the majority of porpoises consumed between 1 and 4 prey groups. The diet was primarily dominated by four key prey guilds (i.e. “The big four”): gadoids (mostly whiting Merlangius merlangus), gobies (Pomatoschistus sp.), sandeels (Ammodytes sp.) and clupeids (both herring Clupea harengus and sprat Sprattus sprattus), whilst other taxa were of less importance. -

' Spring 1992 S1.50. ,• • .. • • • • Keys/one State's OfficialBoating Magiene • Viewpoint On December 12, 1992, House Bill 1107 was signed into law. Boat registration fees were increased for the first time in nearly 30 years and the name of the Commission was changed to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. By changing the name of the Commission to the Fish and Boat Commission, the Legislature recognized the importance of boating to the citizens of the Commonwealth. Whether you fish, water ski or cruise, your boat has become an important part of your recreational experience. Each year over 2.5 million people go boating. Only swimming, hiking, biking and fishing had greater participation levels. In 1963, the year the Commission was officially given authority over the Pennsyl- vania boating program, only 78,000 boats were registered. Since then, boating has grown steadily. Today over 302,000 boats bear Pennsylvania registrations. To accommodate this growth, additional launching facilities had to be provided. New laws and regulations had to be written. Methods to provide additional law enforce- ment had to be found to maintain control over the use of the water. Boating safety education programs had to be developed so that the great number of people new to boating could learn the rules of safety and courtesy. During the development years of the boating program, expansion of the registra- tion base and additional revenue sources, such as the return of the tax paid on fuel used in boats, Projects 500 and 70, Federal Aid for Fish Restoration and the U. S. Coast Guard boating safety assistance programs, all helped defray the costs associ- ated with the increased services. -

25th Salt Water Intrusion Meeting, 17- M. Paepen1, H. Michael2, K. Walraevens1 and T. Hermans1 1Laboratory for Applied Geology and Hydrogeology, Geology Department, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium 2Urban and Environmental Engineering, University ABSTRACT Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and saltwater intrusion (SI) seem two opposite components of the complex interaction between freshwater aquifers and the sea, but are in fact complementary processes (Taniguchi et al., 2002). SGD is of major ecological importance since it can create an important nutrient flux towards the coastal waters, but it might also be the entry gate for contaminants (e.g. Burnett et al., 2006). SI leads to the inflow of salt or brackish water into the onshore freshwater aquifers, causing a risk for the quality of exploited drinking water. The approximately 67 km long Belgian coastline along the North Sea has a complex geometry. A fragmented dune belt 100 m up to 2 km wide separates the sandy beach slope from the polder area. Rainwater infiltrates in the dune and polder areas and partly flows towards the sea as SGD. At the same time, the tides are locally responsible for the unusual presence of a salt water lens under the beach (Vandenbohede & Lebbe, 2006). In addition both SGD and SI are influenced by geological heterogeneity, making their characterization difficult. Two sites are investigated: the Westhoek area (near the Belgian-French border - characterized by a large, broad dune belt) and the area between Wenduine and Blankenberge (West of the Zeebrugge harbour - where the dune belt is relatively narrow). In order to detect zones where SGD occurs, the distribution of the fresh-/saltwater interface is mapped.
