Research has seen an upsurge this year, with 273 papers published in India and 251 abroad. The NEHU faculty held 10 international and 49 national/regional symposia or conferences. 153 research projects are listed as new/completed/ ongoing supported by various government funding agencies. This enhancement of research activity is promising indeed. The prospect for continual growth and development of NEHU calls for augmented resources through filled posts, increased financial support and internal revenue, and above all greater commitment towards excellence on the part of the academic community. This 42ndAnnual Report presents the activities and achievements of T st st the University for the period 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016. The University is comprised of eight Schools with 44 Departments and two Centres as shown in Figure 1 below: Figure 1: Schools of the University Out of these 44 departments, nine departments are situated at Tura Campus, Tura. Postgraduate, Research and Undergraduate programmes are conducted in the various departments of NEHU. Many departments are supported by Central Government funding schemes like the Special Assistance Programme of the UGC and the FIST Programme of the Department of Science and Technology. Two departments (Botany and Chemistry) are recognized as Centres for Advanced Studies by the UGC. A large number of departments have collaborative programmes with other reputed institutes within and outside India. The University also has 64 colleges affiliated to it. These include North vii Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Science (offering MBBS and MD/MS courses) and some minority institutions. The University also runs a number of Central Services including the Central Libraries, Voice & Data Networks, Health Centres, Placement Cells and Student’s Welfare Cells (one each at the Shillong and Tura Campuses), besides the UGC-Human Development Centre, Bioinformatics Centre, Computer Centre, Hindi Cell, Equal Opportunity Cell, IQAC Cell, NSS Cell, Publication Unit, Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility, Sports Department, Women’s Cell, Campus Development Department and Career and Counseling Cell (all at Shillong) which provide centralized services related to educational & research activities and also to the health, sports and general welfare of the University community. At present, the University has 335 teachers in position under different categories of appointment as given in Figure 2 below: Figure 2: Teachers in the University (2015-16) During 2015-16, NEHU Faculty organized 59 conferences/ symposia/ seminars /workshops of which 49 were National or regional and 10 were International. A total of 389 presentations were made in such National and regional events, and 124 in such International events. Publications by faculty included 273 research papers in journals published in India and 251 in journals published abroad. A total of 56 books authored/edited by NEHU faculty were published, and there were 250 book chapters or contributions in Proceedings of Seminars/ Conferences etc. Besides teaching and extension activities, the faculty was also actively engaged in 153 funded research projects during the period under report. Of these, 46 projects were completed, 14 new projects were sanctioned and 93 projects are ongoing. These projects are/were supported by various funding agencies like UGC, DST, DBT, CSIR, DRDO, ICMR, DAE (BRNS), ICSSR, ICAR, NEC etc. viii NEHU is a leading University of North East India which attracts students from North-East India, around the country, as well as many international scholars. Enrollments in NEHU departments for 2015-2016 (Figure 3) include a total of 3899 students for Degrees at the UG/PG level, 913 research scholars at the M.Phil/Ph.D level (including 18 foreign scholars) and 459 students for diploma and certificate courses. This net total of 5,271 university students leads to a teacher-student ratio of 1:15. In addition, a total of 57,139 students are enrolled in Colleges affiliated to NEHU during 2015-16, thus giving a total student population of 62,410. Figure 3: Student Enrollment in Departments of the University (2015-16) Figure 4 below gives the number of students (1,420) from NEHU Departments who were awarded degrees and diplomas in 2015, presented under various categories. Figure 5 below gives the number of students (8,164) from NEHU-affiliated colleges who were awarded degrees and diplomas in 2015, presented under various categories. Thus, a net total of 9,584 students were awarded degrees/ diplomas in the period under report. ix Figure 4: Number of Students of NEHU Teaching Departments Awarded Degrees/ Diplomas Figure 5: Number of Students of NEHU Affiliated Colleges Awarded Degrees/Diplomas x A total of 813 research scholars are registered for the Ph.D. programme and 100 for the M.Phil. programme, all receiving one or the other research fellowship. 303 Ph.D. scholars and 72 M.Phil. scholars received the UGC Non-Net Fellowship, though 32 Ph.D. scholars surrendered this. During 2015-2016, many research scholars received the CSIR-UGC-NET Fellowship, besides also getting other fellowships like Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship/ Maulana Azad National Fellowship /ICSSR Fellowship/ UGC Meritorious Fellowship etc. The Twenty Third Convocation of the University was held on 29th March 2016, with the then Union Minister for Human Resource Development. Smti. Smriti Z. Irani as Chief Guest, where the honorary degree of D.Litt. (honoris causa) was awarded to Smti. Rose Milian Bathew Kharbuli (received in person) and to the celebrated sportsperson Smti. Mary Kom (in absentia). In the Shillong Campus, there are 23 hostels (12 for men; 10 for women; 1 for international students) with a total capacity of 1919 students. The number of Students who were given hostel accommodation during the year 2015-2016 is as given in Figure 6 below: Figure 6: Number of University Students Given Hostel Accommodation in Shillong xi In the Tura Campus, the numbers of students residing in the hostels during 2015-2016 are as given in Figure 7 below: Figure 7: Number of University Students given Hostel Accommodation in Tura xii Details of NEHU students placed in various concerns and establishments through the Career and Counseling Cell during 2015-2016 are summarized in Figure 8 below: Figure 8: Distribution of Placements through the Career and Counseling Cell The Voice Data Network facilities at the two Campuses enable the faculty, research scholars and students to access Internet as well as UGC Infonet and Inflibnet resources. All the academic departments have digital class rooms with Wi-Fi connection and the facility of on-line access to over 3500 journals. The university also has a Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility and Super Power Computer Centre to facilitate research work. The Internal Quality Assurance Cell works for the maintenance of quality in teaching-learning, scientific research and educational administration. The Central Library at Shillong has 2,84,510 books/volumes, 153 Indian and 135 foreign journals, while the Central Library at Tura has 26,017 books volumes, 120 Indian and 19 foreign journals. The UGC-Human Development Centre conducted four Orientation Programmes, one Refresher Course, six Short Term Course, one Summer School, one Winter School and one Principal’s Workshop. The Sports Department organized various Inter-College Tournaments in Badminton, Table Tennis, Football, Basketball and Volleyball (for men & for women) and in Chess (mixed). It also organized the 3rd Vice-Chancellor’s Cricket Tournament, an Inter-College Cricket Tournament (men), an Inter- College Cross-Country Run and a Yoga-cum-fitness Camp. NEHU participated also in East Zone Inter-University Tournaments in Table Tennis, Badminton and Chess Tournaments (men & women) at various places. xiii The NSS Cell of NEHU conducted various social welfare events like blood donation, training and awareness programmes. 22 Camps on “Healthy Youth for Healthy India” were organized in various places in Meghalaya. The Cell also coordinated workshops and seminars on topics like Disaster Management, Drug Abuse, Digital India, etc. statewide. Environmental programmes organized included tree plantation and cleaning drives. Many Swachh Bharat programmes were conducted, besides skill development and village welfare programmes. The CDD NEHU completed the following infrastructural development work: Laboratory furnishing of Science Classroom Cluster, 1st floor above animal house, and hostel renovation. In the Tura Campus, work on the 60-seater MBA Hostel with warden quarters was completed. Work in progress includes the Guest House near Guwahati airport, the Butterfly Park dome and the Tura Campus Guest House.
