Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Taková vystoupení do jisté míry sice nabourávají poselství celého konceptu („Už opravdu, ale opravdu naposledy pro vás zahrajeme…“), na druhou stranu s sebou nesou určité uvolnění, kdy skalní si mohou ještě jednou zadovádět, opozdilci si mohou odbýt svou premiéru na turné a samotný interpret je rád, že z něj nadmíru povedeným turné spadl tlak, a tak si nyní může s klidem a radostí z muziky samé užít posledních pár bonusových štací. Přesně takové události jsme mohli být svědky 9. prosince 2016 v brněnské hale Vodova, kde se zmíněný heavy metalový velikán rozhodl pod projektem nesoucím jeho příjmení definitivně naposledy dopřát českému publiku znění starých hitů Accept s originálním vokálem. Kšeft je kšeft, samozřejmě, ovšem u skutečných kovových legend, mezi něž Udo Dirkschneidera řadím, jsem přesvědčen, že jde primárně o muziku a fanoušky, o podnikatelský záměr až sekundárně. Nemá cenu dál chodit kolem horké kaše, většina fanoušků již prakticky totožné vystoupení navštívila v Praze, Ostravě, Zlíně či dodatečně na Metalfestu. Málokdo si událost nechal ujít. Proto bych chtěl brněnský report pojmout spíše z hlediska zajímavostí a postřehů, dále jako zamyšlení se nad odkazem koncertu Dirkschneiderova uskupení. Již jsem zmínil pohodovou atmosféru. Ta po celou dobu sršela ze všech aktérů na pódiu. Ačkoliv se s výjimkou samotného Uda de facto jednalo o Accept revival, opravdová radost z hraní časem prověřených písní byla znát u všech přítomných.

According to Zagorski-Thomas (2014: 66), the »use of the term in music has been to describe the character of a particular individual or group's performance style and output, but can also relate to a record company or a producer.« He gives the example of producer Phil Spector, who worked with the same pool of musicians, and the Motown label with their iconic band the Funk Brothers, who recorded in the Snakepit studio. Other signature sounds from characteristic instruments and effects devices shape popular music genres (Brockhaus 2017). Even countries and cities can have signature sounds (Simmons 2004; Owsinski 2006; Zagorski- Thomas 2012; Massey 2015; Herbst 2019, 2021), e.g. Philly soul. Many ap- proaches for analysing a recording and its meaning have been pursued.     Late 1960's - Early 1970's The birth of heavy metal. Groups like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were the first heavy metal bands. Late 1970's The rise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest become very popular. 1978 Van Halen released their debut album. This began the Los Angeles/Sunset Strip scene, and many bands would come out of this era, including Motley Crue and Quiet Riot. The so called "hair bands" like Poison, Warrant and Ratt came from that scene as well. The Who's Keith Moon died. Bands formed this year: Dokken, Ratt, Whitesnake A sample of heavy metal albums released in 1978: Black Sabbath - Never Say Die Judas Priest - Stained Class UFO - Obsession 1979 The German band Accept releases their self-titled debut album. They are considered to be the first European power metal band. Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath and replaced by Ronnie James Dio.
