Th Crazy Things Said, Part 20: The Burial of Jesus Pastor Luke Hukee

:42-47

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

Question: What is the significance of Jesus’ burial?

Three Points of Significance: 1. The burial emphasizes the finality of Jesus’ death.

Mark 15:42-43 When it was already evening, because it was preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), , a prominent member of the who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.

Who is Joseph of Arimathea? :50-51 (See also: :57, :38, Deuteronomy 21:22-23, John 19:38) There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.

Mark 15:43-45 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died. When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph.

John 19:31-34 Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. When they came to Jesus, they did not break His legs since they saw that He was already dead. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.

The Burial of Jesus: Luke 23:53 Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.

John 19:41-42 There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation and since the tomb was nearby.

Matthew 27:59-60 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.

page 1 John 19:39-40 (who had previously come to Him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about 75 pounds of and aloes. Then they took Jesus’ body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the aromatic spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.

2. The burial of Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Scripture. :9 (See also: Matthew 27:57-60; Psalm 103:19, 34:20) They intended to bury him with criminals, but he ended up in a rich man’s tomb, because he had committed no violent deeds, nor had he spoken deceitfully.

John 19:36-37 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of His bones will be broken. Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the One they pierced.

Zechariah 12:10 Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of and the residents of , and they will look at Me whom they pierced. They will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for Him as one weeps for a firstborn.

3. The burial of Jesus sets up the resurrection. :3-4 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

Acts 13:29-30 When they had fulfilled all that had been written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and put Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead.

Facts about the burial that set up the resurrection: • Jesus’ body was placed in a tomb. • The owner of the tomb was well known.

Mark 15:42-43 When it was already evening, because it was preparation day ( that is, the day before the Sabbath), Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.

• There were witnesses. Mark 15:47, Now and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was placed.

Matthew 27:61, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.

Luke 23:55, The women who had come with Him from followed along and observed the tomb and how His body was placed.

• The tomb was secured. Matthew 27:59-60 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.

Matthew 27:62-66 The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the gathered before Pilate and said, “Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive He said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ Therefore give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come, steal Him, and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead.’ Then the last deception will be worse than the first.”

“You have a guard of soldiers,” Pilate told them. “Go and make it as secure as you know how.” Then they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard.
