NOLA.com/Times-Picayune: “To ‘Crunk’ or not: fans will move to different beats in Superdome this season” Keith Spera, September 7, 2013

“The Who Dat Nation will still ‘Stand Up and Get Crunk’ for the New Orleans Saints this season. But not as often, and not to the same songs.”

“‘Crunk’ is not being retired,” said Ben Hales, the Saints’ senior vice-president of marketing and business development. “It will come out on special occasions.”

“But popular music will still make up the bulk of the playlist. Fans ‘don't want just New Orleans music,’ Hales said. ‘They don't just listen to WWOZ,’ the community radio station that focuses on local music.”

Gambit: “WWOZ's Reel-to-Reel movie series starts tonight at Canal Place” Ken Korman, September 4, 2013

“Local community radio station WWOZ debuts its new Reel-to-Reel film series tonight, September 4, and tomorrow night, September 5, at 7:30 p.m at The Theatres at Canal Place with King Creole, starring Elvis Presley. All the films in the series boast a major New Orleans connection. A portion of the proceeds will go to support the station.”

NOLA.com/Times-Picayune: “WWOZ to host info sessions on Affordable Care Act for musicians, Saturdays in September” Alison Fensterstock, September 3, 2013

“Each Saturday in the month of September, starting this coming weekend (Sept. 7), the community radio station WWOZ 90.7 FM will host an afternoon information session about the Affordable Care Act.”

“Held in partnership with Coventry Healthcare, the info sessions will be tailored to the needs of members of the music and cultural community who may be self-employed or work on a cash basis, and thus less familiar with formal healthcare coverage.”

NOLA.com/Times-Picayune: “New Orleans films get spotlight in new screening series” Mike Scott, September 3, 2013

“Hollywood South will get the spotlight in a new screening series being co-presented by WWOZ-90.7 FM and The Theatres at Canal Place. The ‘Reel to Reel Movie Series,’ as it has been dubbed, will feature a mix of classic and recent New Orleans films on Wednesday and Thursdays through September and October.”

WBUR.org/npr.com: “New Wave of New Orleans Artists Blend Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock” Jeremy Hobson (Host), August 22, 2013

“The Big Easy is still central to the jazz music scene, and Sondra Bibb, host of ‘Jazz from the with Sondra Bibb’ on WWOZ, says that a number of new young artists are blending the hip hop and rock rhythms they grew with into their jazz.”

Gambit: “New Orleans through Google Glass” George “Loki” Williams, August 25, 2013

“Dwayne Breashears, production manager [sic] of WWOZ-FM, put on Google Glass, and we wandered around Audubon Park while he played with the interface. Breashears was excited about the possibilities for people with disabilities. ‘The potential for on-the-fly closed-captioning for the deaf or other advancements are the most amazing part of the equation,’ he said.”

NOLA.com/Times-Picayune: “Singer and pianist of English band Tipitina lived a fantasy on first visit to New Orleans” Keith Spera, August 23, 2013

“On a recent Friday night, Tipitina finally met Tipitina’s. Back home in England, singer Debbie Jones and pianist Justin Randall front a band called Tipitina. Throughout Europe, they showcase music from, and inspired by, New Orleans, especially rhythm & blues. But the title of their first CD, “I Wish I Was in New Orleans,” was hypothetical: Neither Jones nor Randall had ever actually been to New Orleans, the source of the sound they’ve dedicated their lives to learning.”

“Jones and Randall prepared for their New Orleans odyssey by reading Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire” and pouring over WWOZ-FM’s nightclub listings online, plotting an ambitious itinerary.”
