Keyes, Chair The black brass band parade known as the second line has been a staple of New Orleans culture for nearly 150 years. Through more than a century of social, political and demographic upheaval, the second line has persisted as an institution in the city’s black community, with its swinging march beats and emphasis on collective improvisation eventually giving rise to jazz, funk, and a multitude of other popular genres both locally and around the world. More than any other local custom, the second line served as a crucible in which the participatory, syncretic character of black music in New Orleans took shape. While the beat of the second line reverberates far beyond the city limits today, the neighborhoods that provide the parade’s sustenance face grave challenges to their existence. Ten years after Hurricane Katrina tore up the economic and cultural fabric of New Orleans, these largely poor communities are plagued on one side by underfunded schools and internecine violence, and on the other by the rising tide of post-disaster gentrification and the redlining-in- disguise of neoliberal urban policy.

He is a record producer and Rounder Records vice president of A&R, known for his work in the music industry as a writer, graphic designer, musician, and educator. Among the artists he has produced are Charlie Rich, Irma Thomas, Ruth Brown, Johnny Adams, Beau Jocque and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. His writing has appeared in the Boston Globe, Oxford American, and other publications. Fred Kasten is an Edward R. Murrow award-winning radio producer and interviewer. In 2007, he retired from a two-decade-plus tenure at the New Let Them Talk… Orleans NPR affiliate, 89.9 WWNO, but continues to produce work for the station. NEW ORLEANS, LA (August 5, 2021) – This past weekend, the 2021 Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron celebrated the life, legacy, and music of New Orleans' native son, Louis Armstrong, at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Now in its 21st year, the annual festival that quickly grew into a beloved summer tradition delivered two full days of live entertainment after a two-year hiatus from in-person performances. Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron featured over 20 acts that gave moving performances of their original music and renditions of Louis Armstrong's classics. Fest-goers sang, danced, and swayed all weekend, showing how impactful artists like Armstrong are to the fabric of New Orleans. The Roots of Musiic sponsored by Fiidelliity Bank opened the festival on Saturday, July 31 with a street performance alongside the 400 block of Barracks. They were followed by a star-studded day of New Orleans’ legendary performers, including Lawrence Cotton and Wendellll Bruniious on the GE Stage and Preservatiion Brass and Charmaiine Neviilllle at the Fiidelliity Bank Stage. A week ahead of the Mayor of New Orleans instating a city-wide mask mandate for public indoor spaces, FQFI publicly enforced the same policy to provide attendees the safest experience.

VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN will be located outside of the Jazz Museum at the Mint festival grounds on the Esplanade Ave. middle ground. Check-in will open at 10:30am each morning (Sat+Sun).
