Friends of WWOZ, Inc. Governance Board Meeting General Manager’s Report Wednesday, July 9, 2014

1. Membership. As of May 31, 2014, WWOZ received a total of $1,990,408 from 7,225 members, a revenue increase of 13% compared to the same period in FY 2013. 3,683 WWOZ members from outside the state of contributed $896,939 (45% of total donations) in this reporting period. 954 WWOZ sustaining members accounted for $65,135 in donations made during the period (3% of total donations). The number of sustaining members increased by 73% over the same period in FY 2013. By way of comparison, as of May 31, 2013, WWOZ had received $1,755,934 from 6,873 donors, including $738,569 from 3,432 out-of-state members (42% of total donations). 552 WWOZ sustaining members had contributed $43,469 as of May 31, 2013 (3% of total donations).

2. Underwriting. As of May 31, 2014, WWOZ has generated $273,024 in underwriting and sponsorship revenue. On June 27, 2014, Sponsor Services Coordinator Melanie and Merz and WWOZ Board of Directors Secretary Mary Johnston Norriss met with Ben Johnson, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, to discuss the development of a WWOZ Corporate Membership Program as a means to encourage a larger commitment from local underwriters.

3. Major Giving. As of May 31, 2014, Major Giving has received $143,043 in donations for FY 2014, compared to $220,874 received during the same period in FY 2013. Aside from the one-time $100,000 RosaMary Foundation grant for the tower upgrade, Major Giving revenue has increased by 18% in the reporting period compared to FY 2013. WWOZ received $5,694.87 in donations from The Greater New Orleans Foundation’s GiveNOLA Day, a 24-hour online fundraising event held on May 6, 2014. Major Giving will host an inaugural WWOZ Hi-Fi Club cultivation event on September 18, 2014 at the House of Blues’ Foundation Room for major donors. WWOZ has set a tentative date of October 22, 2014 for its annual New York City cultivation event in conjunction with the Jazz Foundation’s “A Great Night in Harlem” gala held at the Apollo Theater on October 24, 2014. Major Giving has also scheduled an event in the San Francisco Bay area on November 15, 2014, in conjunction with a to-be-announced musical event.

4. WWOZ Swamp Shop. Swamp Shop sales for the month of June 2014 totaled $3,387, compared to revenue of $2,531.15 in June 2013, a month-to-month increase of 34%. The Swamp Shop retail location accounted for $1,552, or 45%, of sales in June 2014. Total FY 2014 revenue for Swamp Shop is $64,835.14, compared to revenue of $128,986.15 for the same period in FY 2013, a decrease of 50%. The Swamp Shop had a merchandise tent at the 2014 Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival on June 14-15, 2014, and was also open for business during WWOZ’s live broadcast of the at the Louisiana Music Factory on July 1, 2014.

5. Marketing & Development. On June 23, 2014, General Manager David Freedman and Development Director Crystal Gross, met with Wayne Fernandez, Director of Development for the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts, to discuss partnering with WWOZ on youth education initiatives and collaborative fundraising opportunities. The George Rodrigue Foundation agreed to donate a “Blue Dog” print for WWOZ to auction off in conjunction with WWOZ Piano Night 2015. OffBeat Magazine featured the “Guardians of the Groove” marketing campaign, with Roots of Music drum major Lawrence “Tudda” Honore of the Roots of Music in its June 2014 issue and with in its July 2014 issue. The spring 2014 issue Art + Design magazine includes a full-page “Guardian of the Groove” ad, featuring Little Freddie King.

6. Outreach. WWOZ Outreach had a strong presence at the Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival in Armstrong Park on June 14-15, 2014, and added to the WWOZ mailing list with a raffle. On June 22, 2014, WWOZ hosted its monthly “Private Collections” event at Siberia in collaboration with Euclid Records, featuring WWOZ show hosts playing vinyl records from their personal collections. The June event celebrated DJ Soul Sister’s 20th anniversary as a WWOZ show host. Outreach distributed new promotion “church-style” fans at WWOZ’s live broadcast of the Rebirth Brass Band’s record release part at the Louisiana Music Factory on July 1, 2014.

7. New Media. As of July 1, 2014, the new HTML-5 audio player is live on WWOZ.org and is the default option for listening to our programming stream, and now WWOZ listeners can access our stream on Apple devices. The New Media team is midway through creating the web presence for WWOZ’s new program New Orleans Calling, with a set of web pages devoted to individual episodes, an aggregate page showing all episodes, and an affiliates’ page. The WWOZ.org homepage has been highlighting the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundations’ Community Partnership Grants program and its new emphasis on funding music and art programs at Louisiana K-12 schools.

8. New Orleans Calling. WWOZ’s new nationally-syndicated program New Orleans Calling debuted on July 5, 2014. New Orleans Calling is an hour-long program focused on the unique music, sounds, stories, and voices of New Orleans. The first episode, titled “The Piano Player,” explored the New Orleans piano tradition, and featured several iconic pianists, including Dr. John, James Booker, and Allen Toussaint. Upcoming episodes will explore the relationship between New Orleans rhythm and blues and gospel music; Louis Armstrong; and Danny Barker’s founding of the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band. New Orleans Calling will air every Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m., in the timeslot formerly reserved for New Orleans All the Way Live, and will be available on WWOZ.org. New Orleans Calling is also broadcast on 38 radio stations across the U.S. and one station in Australia.

9. Community Day of Service. Scott Aiges, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation’s [NOJHFF] Director of Programs, Marketing & Communications, organized a “Community Day of Service” on June 20, 2014, and invited NOJHFF and WWOZ staff and Board members to perform volunteer work at the Capstone Community Gardens & Orchard in the Lower 9th Ward. WWOZ Board Officers C.J. Blache, Belinda Lewis Batiste, and Mary Johnston Norris were in attendance, as were WWOZ staffers Melanie Merz and Duane Williams, along with several staffers and Board members from the NOJHFF.
