The situational brief series takes the assumption that the spread of COVID-19, including its spread, and the response strategies by governments at different levels have implications for communities, citizens, government programmes and priorities, resources, and capabilities. Experiences from other regions of Africa and the world point to COVID-19 as a ‘watershed’ moment, marked by seismic shifts in local, national, regional, and international realities. Political instability looms, however, as Issoufou and Bazoum’s Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS) and a coalition of opposition parties fail to agree on the rules of the game. Political inclusion and enhanced trust in the institutions governing Niger’s electoral process are key if the risk of political crisis is to be avoided. Niger’s central role in Western policymakers’ security and political agendas in the Sahel — coupled with its history of four successful coups in 1976, 1994, 1999, and 2010 — serve to caution Western governments that preserving stability through political inclusion should take top priority over clinging to a political candidate that best represents foreign interests.2 During a turbulent electoral year in the region, Western governments must focus on the long-term goals of stabilizing and legitimizing Niger’s political system as a means of ensuring an ally in security and migration matters — not the other way around.

However, as index insurance is sensitive to threshold crossing extreme event (TCE) frequency and as climate change renders the climate system non-stationary, there is a need to assess how the frequency of extreme events may change as the climate system evolves. One of the recent programmes is the Vision 20:2020 which has been designed to catapult the Nigerian economy into one of the twenty best economies in the world come year 2020. As laudable as this programme’s objectives are, this paper examines how the main objective of the programme could be achieved through the promotion of trade. In order to achieve this, this study has adopted the export-led- hypothesis, using the classical aggregate function. Regression analysis was used to determine whether the variation in economic growth represented with GDP in the past years was explained by a change in the volume of trade and the extent while the Augmented Dickey Fuller test was used to test the stationarity of the time series. The direction of causality of the variables was tested through the Granger causality test. The result revealed a significant positive relationship with economic growth while the Granger causality test revealed a unidirectional causal relationship from exports to GDP. This study confirms other similar ones carried out by other researchers on the relationship between trades and economic growth.

The place of women in politics has always been an ongoing study due to patriarchal domination of men in Nigeria. The study was anchored on the equity theory of leadership which holds the assumption that an individual is motivated by the desire to be equitably treated in his or her work relationship based on fairness. The study adopted a mixed method of content/document analysis and interview. The content/document analysis examined manifest content of appointments and interview provided a face-to-face interaction with selected political stakeholders. Amongst other findings, the study revealed that both administrations of President Jonathan and President Buhari encouraged women political participations at various levels. This is equally supported by the results of interview sessions with political stakeholders. Based on the findings, it is recommended that although women participated under the two administrations, there is need to review upwards, the number of women that are assigned ministerial portfolios and other political appointments. Like many affected countries of the world, the Federal government of Nigeria has taken several necessary precautionary measures to curtail the spread of the disease. This has led to the suspension of all educational activities especially in-class teaching and learning processes. This paper studied the state of education in Nigeria and the effort of government towards continuous education in comparison to the measures put in place by other developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper equally reviewed five different available and popular online learning platforms that can be implemented by the government to provide start-up educational programs that would help to keep students on course by learning remotely from home throughout the period of Covid- 19 pandemic.
