Orchestra for the Next Century, Gary M. Schneider, Music Director, follows up its acclaimed NY debut in February at the Ecstatic Music Festival with a tribute to the great Swiss conductor and musical philanthropist Paul Sacher in a concert on April 30, 2013 at 8:00 pm at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. The concert features two works Sacher commissioned from Stravinsky and Martinů paired with recent works by distinguished American composers Margaret Brouwer and Paul Moravec. Igor Stranvinsky’s Concerto in D for String Orchestra and Bohuslav Martinů’s Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano and Timpani are among the many important works Sacher commissioned for his Basel Chamber Orchestra. Through his commissioning of new works from many of the most important composers of the 20th century, Sacher is responsible for the existence of an amazing number of landmark compositions, many of which entered the repertory and are performed every year in concert halls around the world. The concert will also include the New York premier of Margaret Brouwer’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, featuring the acclaimed Japanese-American violinist Michi Wiancko, for whom it was written. -
Citymusic Cleveland Schedules Hybrid Chamber Music Concerts by Daniel Hathaway
CityMusic Cleveland schedules hybrid chamber music concerts by Daniel Hathaway Pivoting from its customary chamber orchestra concerts, last September CityMusic Cleveland announced a series of chamber music programs curated by members of the ensemble celebrating the centenary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which decreed that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” Initially offered as live, in-person events for a reduced audience of 100 at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus, the series went online after the first two programs due to the progress of the pandemic. Subsequent concerts have been streamed from the Maltz Performing Arts Center. Beginning this week, CityMusic will present pairs of performances — one in-person concert at St. Stan’s, followed by a second performance of the same program streamed from the Maltz. Executive director Eugenia Strauss noted in a press release that the chamber music format will be continued in 2021-2022, when seven groups will be invited to build programs around the themes of peace, equality, and justice, drawing largely on works by female composers and including commissioned pieces. “We hope to return to present orchestral programs in the 22-23 season,” Strauss wrote. NOTE: In-person programs will be performed at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus for a limited, socially distanced audience of 100 people. CityMusic Cleveland follows all Center for Disease Control and State of Ohio health guidelines with respect to the safety of our audiences and performers. -

Adagio GIL ROSE, conductor PROGRAM NOTES 5 By Clifton Ingram AVNER DORMAN (b. 1975) Uriah : The Man The King Wanted Dead (2009) Avner Dorman is not shy about his roots, which grow deep in his art. Born in Tel Aviv in 1975, Dorman has since transplanted to the United States, where he is currently an as- sociate professor at Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College. But whether composing music about the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) or the American Civil War (both of which he has done, for the record) Dorman identifies Israel as home. Through his music, this sense of home becomes more a feeling, one almost utopian in its endless urge for a hopeful future in spite of harsh reality. -

CityMusic: all Beethoven with violinist Tessa Lark (May 20) by Daniel Hathaway Surely it was just a coincidence that CityMusic Cleveland’s final series of concerts mostly duplicated works The Cleveland Orchestra had played the week before in the third concert of its all-Beethoven Prometheus Project at Severance Hall. The unique piece on CityMusic’s program was the Violin Concerto, which received a glowing performance by Tessa Lark and the ensemble on Sunday afternoon, May 20 in St. Noel Church in Willoughby. Music director Avner Dorman opened the program with the gloomy Coriolan Overture, a piece whose dramatic rests are nearly as important as its notes. Dorman kept the tension flowing between the opening chords, assisted by the lively acoustic of the modern building. A lyrical melody only temporarily brings sunlight into the piece, which ends with portentous pizzicatos. Though not the most challenging of Beethoven’s orchestral works, CityMusic embellished the overture with a patina of professionalism. A program change moved the Eighth Symphony to the center of the concert. A compact, witty piece, the work is laced with subtle Beethovenian humor and self-parody, including a scherzo-like second movement suggested (or maybe not) by Maelzel’s ticky-tocky metronome, a backward-looking minuet with an elaborate trio featuring solo clarinet plus cello and two horns (ending dangerously on a high F for the clarinet), and a wild finale that veers off into unrelated keys and almost refuses to end, inspiring one of the composer’s longest and funniest codas. Everything in CityMusic’s performance was tidily in place, but Dorman seemed content to lead a straightforward reading that passed up numerous opportunities to bring out the symphony’s special moments. -

A trio of vocal pieces, including a pair of a cappella works performed by the Montclair State University Singers, open the program. Solomon Liang
After receiving her Master’s degree in Piano Performance in 2007, she began her Doctoral studies in Keyboard Collaborative Arts at USC. She has been studying with Professor Kevin Fitz-Gerald for the last eleven years. In addition, she has studied composition with Ms. Kae Matsumoto, writing numerous pieces for piano and orchestra, chamber music, and solo compositions. She has performed her compositions in Japan, Canada, and throughout the United GUEST ARTIST SERIES States. Her most recent composition is a piece for voice and piano dedicated to the Japanese Americans detained in the internment camp during World War II. Hidden Voices uses several haikus written by the detainees that attempt to capture some of the hidden emotions. Since its inception, the idea behind noexit has been to serve as an outlet for the commission and performance of contemporary avant-garde concert music. Now in our 11th season and with over 140 commissions to date, NoExit is going strong in our efforts to promote the music of living composers and to be an impetus for the creation of new works. We have strived to create exciting, meaningful and thought-provoking programs; always with the philosophy of bringing the concert hall to the community (not the other way around) and by presenting our programs in a manner which allows for our audience to really connect with the experience......... free and open to the public in every sense. For our 2019-2020 season, NoExit will be welcoming a very special guest, cimbalom virtuoso Chester Englander, who will be performing with NoExit over the next two seasons as part of an ambitious project to commission and record 2 CD’s of all new work. As always, there will be more world premiere music than you can count on one hand (we have 10 new pieces planned for this season). We are particularly happy to be presenting the music of 5 very impressive and talented student composers from Northeast Ohio, representing various colleges from the area. As in past seasons, the ensemble will be participating in the NEOSonicFest, collaborating with Zeitgeist (our favorite co-consprirators) and so much more. -

Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] ALAN GILBERT AND THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ALAN GILBERT TO CONDUCT NEW YORK PREMIERE OF STEVEN STUCKY’S SYMPHONY VIOLINIST GIL SHAHAM TO PERFORM BARBER’S VIOLIN CONCERTO Program To Conclude with Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances November 29–December 1 Music Director Alan Gilbert, The Yoko Nagae Ceschina Chair, will conduct the New York Philharmonic in the New York Premiere of Symphony, a New York Philharmonic Co- Commission with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Barber’s Violin Concerto, with Gil Shaham as soloist; and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances Thursday, November 29, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, December 1 at 8:00 p.m. “I’ve always thought of Steven Stucky as a quintessentially American composer,” said Alan Gilbert. “He is not only one of the most important living composers — he has been an important person in the Philharmonic family, and I am honored to introduce Symphony to New York audiences.” Steven Stucky was the host of the New York Philharmonic’s Hear & Now series from 2005 to 2009. The Orchestra performed the World Premiere of Mr. Stucky’s Rhapsodies (a Philharmonic Co-Commission), led by then-Music Director Lorin Maazel at London’s Royal Albert Hall on the 2008 Tour of Europe, and the U.S. Premiere less than a month later in Avery Fisher Hall. Selections from Mr. Stucky’s Spirit Voices were heard on a Philharmonic Young People’s Concert in 2008, and Alan Gilbert conducted Son et Lumière in February 2012.
