Gleason Leonard Archer, Jr. was born on May 22, 1916, in Norwell, MA, the third child of Elizabeth (Snyder) and Gleason Archer, Sr. His older sib- lings were a brother, Allen, and a sister, Marion. Gleason grew up in Boston and attended Boston Latin School. His father founded the Suffolk University Law School in Boston where the family lived during the school year, retreat- ing to Norwell during the summers. Gleason’s mother was a Christian, a member of the Park Street Church, and he came to know Christ at an early age through her influence. Gleason attended Harvard College and received his B.A. degree in 1938, followed in 1939 by his LL.B. degree from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. His took his A.M. degree from Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1940, and his Ph.D. from the same institution in 1944. He grad- uated with his Bachelor of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary the following year. -

CRITICAL DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN THE REFORMED TRADITION AND FUNDAMENTALISM IN ESCHATOLOGY ELTON M. EENIGENBURG I. Preliminary Question: the Matter of Identifying the Opponents. Can the "Fundamentalist" be identified? Several years ago I wrote an article on the Fundamentalist movement for the Earnest Worker, 1 a guide booklet for Sunday School teachers, in which I remarked that more confusion has gathered around the term "Fundamentalism," spelled with a large F, than around any other term in common usage in religious circles today. I noted further that "It is definitely a movement, a spirit, a mood, an attitude, and a set of con victions, but it has no specific organization or office to which you might address a letter requesting information, no reliable body of statistics in dicating weight or size, nor does it have a universally acknowledged literature or theology which one might study. In American Protestantism, where it is principally located, it is the form of religion of some whole denominations, but it crosses the lines of almost every denomination and thus is found everywhere." It has never been otherwise. The term "fundamentalists" was coined in an editorial in the July 1, 1920 issue of the New York weekly, the Watchman-Examiner. It was applied to those "who mean to do battle royal for the fundamentals." As early as 1909 the phrase, "the funda mentals," came into use when a group of evangelical leaders began to organize a scholarly protest against the encroachments of an advancing liberalism in the Protestant churches. Between 1910 and 1915 a series of twelve small volumes came from the press and were given world-wide distribution. -

Our Christian theology shapes not only our beliefs about death, but also how we celebrate the life of the one who has died. This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

Coleman Columbia University Executive Summary The current state of theory, research, and practice on protracted, intractable conflict is robust but limited; although much progress has been made, our understanding is bounded by discipline, culture, role-in-conflict (expert versus disputant), and social class. This pilot project, funded through a mini-grant from the Intractable Conflict Knowledge Base (ICKB), elicited alternative ways-of-knowing and engaging with the phenomenon of intractable social conflict that are typically excluded from the dominant discourse in this area. A professionally and culturally diverse group of scholar- practitioners were identified through the ICKB network as potential participants, and nine (9) pilot interviews were conducted for this study. -

C CI 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8: Does it Support a Pre-wrath View? By Eric Douma A STATEMENT ABOUT CONTEXT Before I begin presenting my position, I want to extend a word of gratitude to my pre-wrath friends, Alan Kurschner and Ryan Habbena. Although this paper is a critique of their eschatological position, I consider these men to be brothers in Christ with whom I share similar views in 99.9% of our theology. Furthermore, since I regard the issue of the timing of the rapture to be a peripheral one (an important issue to be sure, but not one to break fellowship over), I want those on the pre-wrath side to understand the spirit of this critique. In times past, I was quite smitten with the pre-wrath position, especially the evidence I believed 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8 gave to their position. The more I have studied, however, the more I have come to see problems with this position. I hope my pre-wrath friends see this critique as a way of “pushing the ball down the field” in the attempt to help us all move closer to the truth the Scriptures teach. I fully expect a robust response, and welcome the refutation of any of my points if they do not represent truly what the Scriptures proclaim. It is to these men and in this spirit I dedicate my paper. Soli Deo gloria! OBJECTIVE AND APPROACH Many scholars from differing eschatological camps have used 2 Thessalonians 2 as a proof text for their particular brand of end time events.
