3/13/18 ASTROLOGY 101: CHART ANALYSIS ASTROLOGY 101 Class 3: • Approaching the chart as a whole CREATE A PROCESS • Charts can be overwhelming- there are so many details! • Develop a strategy to approach a chart • Identify most important themes, challenges, and strengths • Use keywords to layer meaning 1 3/13/18 STEP 1-3 • Sun – I am essence • Moon – Emotions, instincts, predominant needs • Ascendant– How others see you, how you relate to the outside world, your physical body STEPS 1-4 • Sun – Identify sign and house • Moon – Identify sign and house • Ascendant – Identify ruling planet • Planetary ruler of the sign on the house cusp • For example: Aries rising has Mars as its ruler STEP 4 • What sign rules the Ascendant? • That sign’s ruling planet is your chart ruler, and it has prominence in your chart 2 3/13/18 STEPS 1-4 : BASIC INTERPRETATION • Come up with a couple of sentences about each one using keywords for planet, sign, and house. • For example: • Sun in Aries in the First House would be something like: • The native is assertive, takes initiative, is enterprising, is independent and takes action (Sun in Aries). Others notice (first house) their assertiveness, willingness to take the lead, and outgoing nature (Sun in Aries). INTERPRETING CHARTS • Moon– Emotions, primary needs • Layer keywords • Example: Moon in Aries in the third house • Moon in Aries: You have a need (Moon) to initiate new things, to take action, and to assert yourself. You express your emotions (Moon) assertively, with passion (Aries). • Moon in Aries in the Third House: Your emotional nature is assertive and communicative. You may have a strong need to express your emotions verbally or through written communication. You may have emotional relationships with your siblings. STEPS 1-5 • Sun • Moon • Ascendant/Rising • Ruling Planet • Look at Chart as a Whole 3 3/13/18 STEP 5 • Look at chart as a whole • Identify chart shapes • Identify aspect patterns • Grand Cross, T-Square, Grand Trine, Kite, Yod, Stellium, etc. • Locate personality themes STEP 6 • Look at personal planets • Identify basic interpretation, based on keywords of sign and house • Identify planetary aspects • Challenges, especially STEP 6 • Identify planetary strength and weakness • Planets in domicile • Planets in exultation • Planets in angular house 4 3/13/18 PLANETARY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES Planets in Their Own Signs or Domicile Planets in Exaltation The Sun is exalted in Aries. Cancer is the domicile of the Moon. The Moon is exalted in Taurus. Leo is the domicile of the Sun. Mercury is exalted in Virgo. Virgo is the domicile of Mercury. Venus is exalted in Pisces. Libra is the domicile of Venus. Mars is exalted in Capricorn. Scorpio is the domicile of Mars/Pluto. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. Sagittarius is the domicile of Jupiter. Saturn is exalted in Libra. Capricorn/Aquarius is the domicile of Saturn. Uranus is exalted in Scorpio. Aquarius is the domicile of Saturn/ Uranus. Neptune is exalted in Leo. Pisces is the domicile of Jupiter/Neptune Pluto is exalted in Aries. PLANETARY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES Planets in Detriment Planets in Fall The Sun is in detriment in Aquarius. The Sun is in fall in Libra. The Moon is in detriment in Capricorn. The Moon is in fall in Scorpio. Mercury is in detriment in Sagittarius and Mercury is in fall in Pisces. Pisces. EXAMPLE • Venus as chart ruler • In Libra • In First House • Venus themes strong in the native’s chart 5 3/13/18 EXAMPLE • Mars in Cancer • Passion, courage, and assertiveness of Mars in sensitive, emotional, receptive Cancer STEP 7 • Look at Saturn • Gives an indicator of life challenges and limitations • Come up with keywords for sign and house • Planetary aspects to Saturn STEP 8 • Look at Outer Planets • Look at the planet’s house • Look at aspects to and from other planets • Outer planet aspects relate to evolutionary processes and spiritual growth • Hard aspects can indicate significant challenges to overcome 6 3/13/18 STEP 9 • Explore Planetary Nodes • Life path and purpose • We move from our South Node to North Node throughout our lifetime • Look for sign and house EXAMPLE North Node in Cancer in the 3rd house • Life purpose relates to: • Nurturing, building a nest, family and home, creating (Cancer) • Teaching, learning, siblings, marketing, communications (3rd House) STEP 10 • Identify chart strengths • Look at Jupiter’s house and sign • Delineate strongest planets to assess chart strengths, talents, and abilities 7 3/13/18 JUPITER • Jupiter is the planet of expansion, and it benefits its house as well as the planets in aspect with it • Look for harmonious aspects with other planets, there could be luck represented STRONG PLANETS = TALENTS • Strong planets • In exaltation or domicile • Angular houses (or their own house) • Good aspect • Indicate chart strengths and talents CHART INTERPRETATION, STEP BY STEP 1.
