  • Practicing Medicine in Ancient Egypt
Practicing Medicine in Ancient Egypt Michael R. Zimmerman March 28, 2017 Michael Zimmerman is Adjunct Professor of Biology at Villanova University, Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, and Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester (UK) KNH Centre for Biomedical Egyptology. et us start by imagining what Albert Einstein called a “thought experiment.” It is the year 5015 CE L and an excavation of an ancient hospital, ca. 2016 CE, uncovers an ancient book, written on paper rather than on the current electronic device. Although the book is in poor condition there is a partial hieroglyphic title, transcribed by an Egyptologist and a paleopathologist as Merck Manual. The book seems to be a compilation of disease descriptions and treatments by a long forgotten Dr. Merck. The diseases are difficult to decipher in an era when humans live to the age of 150 and die only when aged organs fail. It appears that the body could be attacked by minute parasitic organisms, visible only with an ancient tool called a “microscope.” Some cells appear to have taken on a life of their own, destroying the body by causing diseases known by a variety of poorly preserved terms such as “cancer” or “neoplasm.” The task of our future paleopathologist is analogous to that of the difficult undertaking of deciphering ancient Egyptian medical papyri. There are a number of surviving papyri, in various degrees of completeness, which have been studied by physicians and Egyptologists. They have done remarkably well, particularly in that the writing is mostly in the difficult hieratic rather than hieroglyphic text.

  • King Tut and the Dead Earl
OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 07/02/12, SPi 1 King Tut and the Dead Earl Opening the tomb he idea of the mummy curse always conjures up the story of the open- T ing of the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun in the winter of 1922–3 by the archaeologist Howard Carter and his wealthy patron, George Herbert, the Fift h Earl of Carnarvon. Carter and Carnarvon had worked as a team of excavators in Egypt since 1907, discovering a number of minor tombs in the necropolis of Th ebes and publishing a well-regarded scholarly study of their eff orts, Five Years’ Explora- tions at Th ebes , in 1911. In 1914, they fi nally acquired their long-desired conces- sion, a legal permit to excavate, issued by the Egyptian Antiquities Service, in the Valley of the Kings. Th ey stepped into the concession of the remorseless tomb-hunter Th eodore Davis, a retired American lawyer who quitt ed the area loudly declaring that the Valley of the Kings was an exhausted site with no new tombs left to discover. Davis had a cavalier reputation, however, and Carter was convinced that the tomb of Tutankhamun had not yet been found, despite some tantalizing discoveries bearing the boy-king’s royal name. War service then interrupted their planned excavations, Carter returning to the site in 1917. By early 1922, Carter counted six seasons of systematic searching in vain for signs of the tomb. Th eir fellaheen – teams of native Egyptian labourers – had moved an estimated 200,000 tons of rubble to no eff ect.

A Jumpchain CYOA Thousands of years ago, the high priest of the pharaoh Seti the First, Imhotep, murdered his lord after he entered an adulterous relationship with Seti’s concubine, Anck-Su-Namun. Imhotep’s lover committed suicide when their crime was discovered, but Imhotep would not let death be the end of their love. Using the Book of the Dead, Imhotep attempted to resurrect her. But he and his priests were discovered and stopped by the Medjai; the pharaoh’s bodyguards. Imhotep and his priests were mummified alive, and Imhotep himself was given the Hum-Dai; a curse so terrible that should its victim ever arise, they would bring with them the Ten Plagues of Egypt. Buried in his sarcophagus with flesh-eating scarabs that slowly devoured his flesh, Imhotep’s mummified body waited in his dark tomb in Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead… The year is now 1923. Rick O’Connell, a member of the French Foreign Legion and the rest of his garrison are about to be attacked by a group of Tuareg warriors at Hamunaptra. In the aftermath of the battle, Rick will find a peculiar box in the ruins… inadvertently setting the course for Imhotep’s return. You have +1000 CP to spend. Rather than relying on skill, knowledge, or supernatural powers, you rely more on chance and fate, as well as the help of others. Choice of starting in England, America, France, China, Egypt or Peru.

IMHOTEP I. IMHOTEP AS A DEMIGOD IMHOTEP I The Vizier and Phvsician of KING ZOSER and afierwards THE EGYPTIAN GOD OF MEDICINE BY JAMIESON B. HURRY, M.A., M.D. OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS HUMPHREY MILFORD IN HONOUR OF IMHOTEP ' The first Figure of a Physician to stand out dearly from the Mists of Antiquity.'-SIR W. OSLER. THE PROLOGUE HIS Monograph is consecrated to the T memory of a distinguished magician-physi- cian and sage who first appears on the stage of Egyptian history in the reign of King Zoser of the IIIrd Dynasty, and reappears at intervals on that stage during a period of over three thousand years. His record therefore extends over a large part of the history of ancient Egypt. We shall attempt to trace the fortunes of Imhotep both during the period of his human activity and also during the subsequent periods when he was looked upon first as a demigod and finally as one of the full deities of Egypt. We shall also seek to analyse the forces which resulted in such an exceptional occurrence as the deification of an ordinary mortal, i. e. of one who had never been a king. The subject is one which will interest various groups of readers. In the first place it will appeal to the lover of archaeology who is fascinated by the early story of our race and by every detail which throws light on its evolution. There is a glamour in the study of the earliest pages of X THE PROLOGUE liberal scale, so that the reader may be fur- nished with the authority on which statements are founded.

Indeed, ancient Egyptian funeral rites, and embalming in particular, were only one of the earliest and most striking instances of an essential human drive to escape death and oblivion. The choice of this metaphor by Bazin can be explained by a common history as well as a number of shared features between Egyptology and the budding practice of filmmaking and film- watching at the end of the nineteenth century, as Antonia Lant argues in “The Curse of the Pharaoh, or How Cinema Contracted Egyptomania”.

    U. S. NATIONAL MUSEUM PROCEEDINGS, VOL. 65, ART. 15 PL. I — THE MAGIC, PSYCHIC, ANCIENT EGYPTIAN, GREEK, AND ROMAN MEDICAL COLLECTIONS OF THE DIVI- SION OF MEDICINE IN THE UNITED STATES NA- TIONAL MUSEUM By Charles Whitebread Assistant Curator, Division of Medicine, United States National Museum INTRODUCTION. The origin of the materia medica collection of the United States National Museum dates back to 1881. In 1882 the drug collection which had been exhibited at the Centennial Exposition at Phila- delphia in 1876 was transferred to the Museum by the Department of Agriculture. For a time the efforts of the section of materia medica were confined almost exclusively to procuring authentic specimens of medicinal materials. Some years later the scope of the section was enlarged to include exhibits visualizing the history of the healing art, and in 1898 the more comprehensive name of division of medicine was substituted for the " section of materia medica" theretofore used. The scope of activities of the division was again enlarged in 1916, this time to include the history of pharmacy, public hygiene and sanitation, and the division, which up to that time had been administered under the department of anthropology, was made a unit of the department of arts and industries. The materia medica collection has served the purpose of giving the general public an easy reference to specimens of " official " me- dicine and has afforded students of medicine and pharmacy the opportunity of studying this subject in its various details. The subjects of history of pharmacy, public hygiene and sanitation, be- cause of their comparatively recent addition to the activities of the division, have not progressed to the same degree of perfection as the materia medica and history of medicine collections, but with the cooperation of the various government departments and outside agencies interested in these subjects, extensive plans for their de- velopment are now under way.
