The spacious galley up combines with the saloon and cockpit to form an exceptional entertainment area. All cabins have queen-size beds. The layout options offer either the Owners version with three queen-size cabins, and a choice of two or three head / showers; or the Charter version with four queen-size cabins, and four head / showers. The deck has been designed for safety and shorthanded sailing with all controls led aft to the coachroof winches. The 440 also features a generous performance sail plan. The ample deck and trampoline area allow for comfortable outdoor activities, and the large cockpit is shaded by a bimini with hardtop walkway aft. In fact, it was getting really scary. After 17 magical days at sea we were being set by a powerful current at an alarming rate toward the outlying rocks of an equatorial island populated only by marine iguanas, flamingoes, and finches. The engine that had run hot, loud, and flawlessly one hour each day of our passage while charging batteries, refused to start and had no intention of rescuing us from imminent shipwreck. Our sturdy working sails—main, genoa, and staysail—hung limp in the calm. I pondered my options. Did we have time to launch the dinghy and tow Strider, our 37’ cutter, by the ash breeze? Would anyone, anywhere hear a Mayday? Should we prepare to abandon ship? Surely I was too young to die, wasn’t I? The skipper’s wife suddenly remembered the spinnaker that had been packed in the forepeak since their Pacific cruise began six months earlier. With the speed of an America’s Cup crew we set the chute, and slowly but steadily sailed clear of danger. That was my first profound and indelible lesson in the importance of light air sails. Usually large and often colorful, light air sails are made of thin strong fabric and are meant to move a vessel along in winds of Force 1 to 3. They might not spring to mind along with storm jibs and life rafts when one begins outfitting a boat for offshore cruising, but they can make a vital contribution to the safety, comfort, and speed of a voyage, not to mention its pure enjoyment.

    Tips and Tricks - Basic Tuning Guide by Miranda Powrie April 2014 Hi Everyone, These basic tuning tips will suit people who are just getting started in the Weta and give a base point to work from. You might want to tweak the settings to suit once you get more of a feel for the boat, but these are the things that we do at Weta HQ when we set up our boats. Mast Rake This will make the biggest difference to your racing. We recommend having the side stays in the 3rd or 4th hole from the bottom of the stay adjuster, as in the picture to the right. Always tape the pin that holds the stay adjuster to the float as the leeward stay will flop around a bit and we have seen a couple of masts come down when the pin falls out. If you tape it, then it can’t fall out. If you are going sailing without the jib, then we recommend putting the side stays into hole 3 or 4 from the top, to move the mast forward and make it easier to bear away. Otherwise it can be hard to tack when you have no jib to pull the bow down. When I rig I pull the forestay on as hard as I can, as the boat generally goes better with plenty of rig tension. Some people rig up, then pull the screecher on hard and then give the forestay another pull before they leave the shore. Which hole? Both the jib and the main have a choice of clew holes to help power up or to de-power the boat.
