  • The Urban and Cultural Climate of Rotterdam Changed Radically Between 1970 and 2000. Opinions Differ About What the Most Importa
The urban and cultural climate of Rotterdam changed radically between 1970 and 2000. Opinions differ about what the most important changes were, and when they occurred. Imagine a Metropolis shows that it was first and foremost a new perspective on Rotterdam that stimulated the development of the city during this period. If the Rotterdam of 1970 was still a city with an identity crisis that wanted to be small rather than large and cosy rather than commercial, by 2000 Rotterdam had the image of the most metropolitan of all Dutch cities. Artists and other cultural practitioners – a group these days termed the ‘creative class’ – were the first to advance this metropolitan vision, thereby paving the way for the New Rotterdam that would begin to take concrete shape at the end of the 1980s. Imagine a Metropolis goes on to show that this New Rotterdam is returning to its nineteenth-century identity and the developments of the inter-war years and the period of post-war reconstruction. For Nina and Maria IMAGINE A METROPOLIS ROTTERDAM’S CREATIVE CLASS, 1970-2000 PATRICIA VAN ULZEN 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2007 This publication was produced in association with Stichting Kunstpublicaties Rotterdam. On February 2, 2007, it was defended as a Ph.D. thesis at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. The thesis supervisor was Prof. Dr. Marlite Halbertsma. The research and this book were both made possible by the generous support of the Faculty of History and Arts at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, G.Ph. Leendertz (Rijkswaterstaat) Page i Preface This thesis study was performed in order to finalize my Master of Science program in Civil Engineering with the track ‘Timber and Steel Construction’ within ‘Structural Engineering’ at the Delft University of Technology. To do so, I was offered an opportunity to analyse the wear behaviour of bridge bearings in the main office of Rijkswaterstaat, located in Utrecht, the Netherlands. This opportunity was made possible by Dr. Ing. H. Leendertz, who is part of the graduation committee as well as the committee of the European standards regarding structural bearings. During my graduation thesis I was able to acquire more knowledge about, for example, finite element modelling, bridges and their bearings. I therefore would like to thank Rijkswaterstaat and the graduation committee, which also provided for support and critical judgment. Naveen Narain Delft, November 2012 Page iii Summary Structural bearings are connections between the substructure and superstructure of the bridge and may allow translations and rotations. They also transmit the external forces, acting on the superstructure, to the foundation.

FRANK VAN DER HOEVEN, STEFFEN NIJHUIS HI RISE! I CAN SEE YOU PLANNING AND VISIBILITY ASSESSMENT OF HIGH BUILDING DEVELOPMENT IN ROTTERDAM 12.1 INTRODUCTION Western European cities like London, Paris, Rotterdam and Frankfurt am Main have seen im- pressive high building developments over the past two decades. This has led them to develop policies for regulating the planning and construction of tall buildings, high-rise buildings and skyscrapers within their territory. So far, these high building developments and policies have received little attention from the academic community. This chapter elaborates a framework for analysing high building development and the visual impact of high buildings on the surround- ing landscape with the city of Rotterdam as a Western European showcase. It presents a system- atic approach for analysing high building development in terms of architectural height, year of completion, location and functional use, for use in the comparison of existing buildings with the urban policies that are in place. Comprehensive GISc-based viewsheds were used to analyse the visibility of the high buildings, factoring in both meteorological circumstances and the vertical area of the buildings. The showcase city of Rotterdam demonstrates that a considerable distance exists between the vision and reality. The city struggles to deliver a consistent and integrated policy for high-building urban areas, while the high building developments themselves seem to be ruled by a remarkable internal logic that is not fully recognised in policymaking. The impact of tall buildings, high-rises and skyscrapers on neighbourhoods, urban districts and cities is widely acknowledged by architects, urban planners, politicians and developers all 277 over the world.

FOREWORD Dear Cyclists, Discovering Europe on a bicycle – the Rhine Cycle Route makes it possible. It runs from the Alps to a North Sea beach and on its way links Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. This guide will point the way. Within the framework of the EU-funded “Demarrage” project, the Rhine Cycle Route has been trans- formed into a top tourism product. For the first time, the whole course has been signposted from the source to the mouth. Simply follow the EuroVelo15 symbol. The Rhine Cycle Route is also the first long distance cycle path to be certified in accordance with a new European standard. Testers belonging to the German ADFC cyclists organisation and the European Cyclists Federation have examined the whole course and evaluated it in accordance with a variety of criteria. This guide is another result of the European cooperation along the Rhine Cycle Route. We have broken up the 1233-kilometre course up into 13 sections and put together cycle-friendly accom- modation, bike stations, tourist information and sightseeing attractions – the basic package for an unforgettable cycle touring holiday.
