R E P O R T a N N U a L I M P A ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT Gratitude As you read through the Annual Impact Report, please notice the messages of gratefulness and appreciation our Scholars have passed along. Your donations are changing their lives, and it’s quite clear that these young men and women aren’t taking your generosity for granted. Thank you! For more messages, please visit Ouimet.org/gratitude “I am humbled and grateful to be a recipient of a Ouimet Scholarship, and truly appreciate your kindness and generosity which helps people like me pursue their college dream. The Ouimet Scholarship I received assisted me with my school expenses and without it I would not have been able to attend my first choice college.” Connor Mangelson Methodist University, 2019 The Ridge Club “I am beyond thankful for this scholarship, because I would not be attending my dream school and doing all of these activities without it. I hope to continue being a Ouimet Scholar, and carrying on the Ouimet legacy academically.” Cassandra Gonser University of New Hampshire, 2020 Essex County Club A Message from the President October 2018 Dear Ouimet Fund Friends, I am proud to share that this past year has continued our steady and wonderful growth pattern. While this is very rewarding, we are at the same time embarking on a comprehensive strategic planning process to enhance our mission. The board will be addressing ways to do even more for our future Scholars as their need grows so rapidly in this era of dramatic college tuition increases. In 2018-2019, we celebrate our 70th year with many ways by which we can impact the lives of our Scholars. Most importantly, with your help, Scholar awards increased to $2.2 Million, a $200,000 increase over last year. This increase is our largest ever, and represents growth of 38% in four years. Our thriving endowed scholarship program is again a major catalyst. A total of $800,000, or 36% of our awards, will come from the yield on our 148 endowments. As we go to press we will "We remain have added seven new awards since last year. Fittingly, one has been created by a committed to member of the original class of scholars from 1949. Trustee Bob McDonald and his family have endowed the Bob and Elaine McDonald Family Scholarship. The Fund strengthening has come a long way since awarding $4,600 to 13 students back in that first year. and growing The The total since then is a tremendous $36 Million to 5,900 students! Fund, and will As The Fund grows, we also see a continued high number of annual scholarship applications. Over the past four years applications have increased 38%, putting work to send more great pressure on our fundraising. We have also seen great increases in the number deserving students of colleges our students attend (164), female scholars (70), minority scholars (29), and inner-city scholars (67). We are happy that our 326 financial scholars this year to college." have an average annual financial award of $6,548, which translates to four-year assistance of approximately $26,200. However, our goal has always been to fund as much of the “unmet need” as possible and we still hover in the 40% range. Five million dollars of total unmet need is a huge hurdle. As one of our directors said recently, “We have a lot of great kids who still need a lot of help.” Also, helping fuel our scholarship increase has been growth in our Club Relations, Golf Marathon, Annual Fund and Alumni Donations. Each of those programs are critical to our continued success. This past year, we were proud to present Jim Furyk with our 22nd Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf at our Annual Banquet. It was a wonderful night, and one each of the attendees won't soon forget. I’m delighted to announce that Hall of Famer and NBC golf broadcast commentator Johnny Miller will be our 2019 honoree on April 11 at the Sheraton Boston. Our dinner has been the largest golf dinner in the U.S., the award one of golf’s most prestigious and our 2019 event with Mr. Miller should be a great occasion to kick off the season. The Banquet is our prime event for spreading the message of our mission and showcasing our Scholars, and we know Johnny is excited to be part of it. Cont. 1 2018 IMPACT REPORT Throughout the history of the Ouimet Banquet, a special highlight has always been the introduction of representatives of Mr. Ouimet’s and Eddie Lowery’s families. Sadly, Mr. Ouimet’s two daughters, Barbara McLean and Janice Salvi, passed away in the last year. We also lost three Ouimet Fund Trustees – Bill Foley, Ray LaJoie, and Dixon Sykes. They and the other many friends shown in our Memorial Donations section will all be greatly missed. The future of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is bright. Through your generosity and the hard work of the Ouimet Staff, Board of Directors, alumni, corporate partners and volunteers, we remain committed to strengthening and growing the Fund to send more deserving young women and men to college. Thank you very much for your support and best wishes to you, your family and friends as the new year approaches. The Banquet, which continues to be the largest annual golf dinner in America, was held on Tuesday, March 27th at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. TThe Connolly Group – Morgan Stanley was again the Presenting Sponsor. "We were thrilled to have Jim Furyk as our 2018 Honoree," said Fund President Jim Blue. "Jim has a tremendous record, and has been one of the top players on the PGA TOUR for the last 24 years. He's played on 9 Ryder Cup teams, including here in Boston in 1999, and was preparing to be Ryder Cup captain. He is also greatly respected for his charitable work," said Jim Blue, Ouimet Fund President. Veteran golf broadcaster David Marr III served as Master of Ceremonies for the third straight year and conducted a very entertaining and meaningful interview with Mr. Furyk. Other Special Features In addition to Mr. Furyk, the evening featured a wonderful speech from Student Speaker Josh Belinsky, who caddied for 12 years at Blue Hill Country Club and recently graduated from Northeastern University ‘18. Josh described overcoming obstacles in his life, his involvement in several college entrepreneurial pursuits, and how the Ouimet Fund support was critical to his graduating from Northeastern. Josh has since been invited to join the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors. Dennis J. Kelly, a Ouimet Alumnus (Williams College ’68) and the Fund’s Secretary-Counsel, was honored with the Richard F. Connolly Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Kelly and his firm, Boston-based Burns & Levinson, have been involved in a wide variety of legal projects over the years and Denny is truly a critical member of the Ouimet Fund Board of Directors. The Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Established 1756 Join us for the John A. Fraser Memorial Golf Tournament the Society’s 76th Annual Tournament St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Thursday, June 3rd, 2021 The 76th Annual St. Andrew’s Society Golf Tournament will take us back to the birthplace of golf in America and home to our Society’s very first golf outing in 1945: St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson. The history of Saint Andrew’s Golf Club is replete with “firsts” in American golf. Saint Andrew’s hosted the first U.S. Amateur and “Open” Championships. It was a founding member (along with The Country Club, the Chicago Golf Club, the Newport Country Club and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club) of the United States Golf Association. In 1900 Saint Andrew’s member Charles E. Sands won the first Men’s Olympic Golf Championship at the Paris Games. The magnificent golf course of the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club has been shaped by the skill and imagination of three renowned designers over the course of its nearly 115 years of operation. The first design of the Saint Andrew’s Mount Hope course was the work of William Henry Tucker Sr. who had joined the professional staff in 1895. Having apprenticed under Tom Dunn, whose U.K. based firm was, at the time, the most active golf course construction company in the world, “Willie” Tucker was well qualified to lay out the new course. The project was initiated in 1896; the course officially opened in the summer of 1897.

This year’s field includes reigning USATF marathon national champions Emma Bates and Brogan Austin, and five U.S. women with personal records (PRs) faster than 2:30 (including two of the top 10 fastest women in U.S. history). “This year’s elite field highlights an exciting resurgence we are seeing in American distance running right now,” said Bank of America Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski. “We have a deep pool of American runners who are coming to Chicago to run fast, and we cannot wait to welcome them in the fall. We could see new American records and a lot of personal bests in October.” American women’s field With a PR of 2:20:57, Hasay leads this year’s field as the second-fastest American woman in history and the fastest to ever run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Hasay hopes to put Deena Kastor’s long-standing American record, 2:19:36, in jeopardy. • Student Housing Trends 2017-2018 Academic Year
Student Housing Trends 2017-2018 Academic Year Boston’s world-renowned colleges and universities provide our City and region with unparalleled cultural resources, a thriving economic engine, and a talented workforce at the forefront of global innovation. However, the more than 147,000 students enrolled in Boston-based undergraduate and graduate degree programs place enormous strain on the city’s residential housing market, contributing to higher rents and housing costs for Boston’s workforce. In Housing a Changing City: Boston 2030, the Walsh Administration outlined three clear strategic goals regarding student housing: 1. Create 18,500 new student dormitory beds by the end of 2030;1 2. Reduce the number of undergraduates living off-campus in Boston by 50%;2 3. Ensure all students reside in safe and suitable housing. The annual student housing report provides the opportunity to review the trends in housing Boston’s students and the effect these students are having on Boston’s local housing market. This report is based on data from the University Accountability Reports (UAR) submitted by Boston-based institutions of higher education.3 In this edition of Student Housing Trends,4 data improvements have led to more precise enrollment and off-campus data, allowing the City to better distinguish between students that are or are not having an impact on the private housing market. The key findings are: ● • Overall enrollment at Boston-based colleges and universities is 147,689. This represents net growth of just under 4,000 (2.8%) students since 2013, and a 2,300+ (1.6%) student increase over last year.
