President’s Report Jeff Isbell, CCM October is time to celebrate for the New England Chapter CMAA. While this month marks the beginning of our fiscal year, the Annual Meeting allows the opportunity to fondly reminisce over the year that was and look forward with renewed enthusiasm to the upcoming year. So as The Hallmark Channel begins to air Christmas movies this week (WAY TOO EARLY) it got me to thinking that the Annual Meeting is essentially our Chapter’s New Year’s Eve. The Chapter kicked off a great year of events in January with the first Annual Foundation Expo. This day long event included multi- leveled education, fantastic networking, and meaningful connections with our very important trade partners. The 2020 Expo will be held again in January hosted at Andover Country Club so please watch your inboxes and RSVP as soon as you can. We continued to honor the commitment developed from the Strategic Plan to hold a combination of day long education and shorter meetings while touching all the geographic corners of our Chapter. A few highlights: Our meeting at Great Horse and Social at MGM Springfield where I met Rod Clement of Longmeadow Country Club who has “never had a bad day in his life.” The trip out to western allowed students from UMass to join us and Scott and Bryan of Great Horse to attend a meeting after several years in the chapter. The September trip to Nantucket introduced the chapter to Stephen and Christian of Great Harbor Yacht Club, Chad and Becky around Town, and gave me an opportunity to lose dozens of The Westmoor Club logoed golf balls at Sankaty Head Golf Club. A massive thanks to the Managers that hosted events at their clubs throughout the year and to those who attended the events as I know that time is such a precious commodity. If you are interested in hosting a chapter event in the future or have ideas on how we can make our meetings better, please reach out to me. I am beyond proud of our continuing commitment to philanthropy. The Tito’s Vodka promotion returned bigger and better this year with a $20,000 donation on the chapter’s behalf to Family Reach, a national organization dedicated to eradicating Cancer-Related Financial Toxicity. Last year’s donation of blankets to the Pine Street Inn won the chapter a Blue Ribbon for best community outreach at this year’s CMAA Leadership/Legislative Conference. Thank you to Laura Ryan, the glue that holds the chapter together. Laura has the unenviable task of supporting the ten club managers on the board who all behave, well, like club managers do. Thank you to Neal, Greg, Carol, Emily, Stephen, Geoff, Bob, Jason, and Megan who generously give up hours to work on projects to make our association better. This enthusiastic group never ceases to amaze me with their energy and creativity. Jeff S. Isbell New England CMAA Chapter President

Treasurer’s Report Neal Vohr, CCM, CCE

2018 Financial Review The accounting firm of O’Connor, Maloney & Company, P.C. (OM&C) from Worcester, MA reviewed and reconciled the 2018 NECMA financial accounts and records in the spring of 2019. In accordance with established practices, the Chapter’s books continue to be reviewed annually by this audit firm. This summer, the Board of Directors reviewed and approved the Compilation report and audit furnished by OM&C. Findings of the annual Chapter audit are available for review upon request.

2018-2019 Fiscal Year in Review Over the course of the last fiscal year, the chapter has maintained solid financial condition and has once again delivered a year of robust programming and events. Our year to date income is approximately $134K versus an operating budget of $165K, the revenue shortfall was mainly in dues and DMF reimbursements. DMF reimbursements track our education costs, so we save basically the same amount on the expense side. On the dues shortfall we continue to analyze the current membership levels for budget purposes but changes in membership levels are difficult to predict. Expenses project to be $130K versus a budget of $148K. On the expense side we were able to save in other event costs as mentioned above, but we did have some unbudgeted expenses for social events

Budget 2019- 2020 The Proposed 2019- 2020 Budget was approved by the Board of Directors on September 26th, 2019 and is presented here for your review. The budget reflects essentially a modest profit for the fiscal year. The anticipated John Deere rewards contribution is unpredictable given it is based on chapter equipment purchases throughout the year. This contribution has been restructured over the last year and to date we have not received a contribution. If and when we receive these funds, they will continue go directly into a separate account to help offset the cost of some of our complimentary education and social events. The 2019- 2020 budget continues to show restraint in general operating expenses while providing quality programs and services benefiting all NECMA members. The BOD also approved modest donations to the CMAA’s Club Foundation. Supporting this worthy foundation is an imperative initiative to continuing to improve and grow our private club industry. 2019-2020 NECMA Dues $465 - First Manager at Club $235 - Second Manager at Club $175 - Third (or more) Manager at Club $230 Alumni Manager $61 Retired Manager/ Faculty/ FOC

Outings Report Emily Goldman, CCM & Geoff Piva

We had an active year on the Outings front. First, at the 2018 Annual Meeting at we had our annual Club Managers Golf Championship. 2018’s Gross winner was Charles Grandon, CCM, General Manager at Wollaston Golf Club and Net winner was Patrick Laxton, Clubhouse Manager at Harvard Club of Boston. The added scramble division was a big hit and allowed all members the chance to play a gem.

2018’s Pro, President, Superintendent, Manager Tournament (PPSM) enjoyed a warm, sunny day at Tedesco Country Club. Thanks to General Manager Michael McGillicuddy, PGA and Head Professional Bob Green, PGA for a wonderful day and evening. Tedesco is always a treat and we had a great field. Also, a big thank you to Club Benchmarking for supporting us and the event again this year. We could not do what we do without your support!

The 34th Annual NECMA Foundation Scholarship Tournament took place on October 7th at in South Hamilton, MA. This event is not possible without the help of our sponsors, volunteers and NECMA members. Myopia is such a treat for us as golfers and club managers. The history of the club goes back 125 years, and they have hosted 4 US Opens. To say we were lucky to have our event at Myopia this year would be an understatement.

First, thank you to Clubhouse Manager Amber Fritsch and Head Golf Professional Michael Bemis, PGA and their staffs for an amazing day at a truly historic venue. The was pristine (and difficult) but everyone enjoyed their time on the course. Thank you to platinum sponsor PKF for being such a loyal sponsor of this event year after year. Other sponsors included MS Walker, Ruby Wines, Dole & Bailey, Costa Foods, Goslings Rum, Club Car, and Jed Steele Wines.

The tournament would not be what is without the help of all the managers that donate their time to help the day of the event. As always, a big thank you goes out to Dee Curran, CCM for her never-ending support of NECMA and the tournament. Without Dee, it would not be possible! Also, Rod Warnick of UMASS and the students that attended and helped us throughout the day. Finally, the tournament would not be possible without the support and hard work from our Managing Directors, Laura Ryan of NECMA and Erika Farrell of the David Meador Foundation. Thank you everyone for a great day!

We are excited to have 2020’s venues already confirmed! The PPSM will take place on June 29th at Manchester Country Club in Bedford, NH. Thanks to Brian Kelley, CCM, PGA for hosting us. Also, the NECMA Foundation tournament is confirmed for October 5th at the beautiful Wianno Club in Osterville, MA. Thanks to Darin Crippen, CCM, CCE for offering up your club and a wonderful fall trip to Cape Cod!

The success of our tournament program does not happen without you, the members. If anyone has any suggestions about new formats, additional events or other ways we can improve the events we do, feel free to reach out to us directly.

We are looking forward to a great 2020. Thank you all for your support of NECMA.

David Meador Scholarship Report Congratulations to the 2019 Meador Scholarship Recipients:

Rebecca Jones, University of New Hampshire Hannah Kemp, University of Massachusetts Stephanie Margolis, University of Massachusetts Alana Milazzo, Johnson & Wales University Joseph Spinelli, Johnson & Wales University Rachel Williams, Johnson & Wales University

All of the students deserve the award and have presented themselves extremely well. Congratulations to the award winners and we look forward to watching them grow their careers.

The NECMA Professional Development Scholarship continues to be able to assist our managers. It is a needs based scholarship designed to help pay for the registration fees of CMAA sponsored education and conferences. As some clubs do not fully fund or fund at all a manager’s education budget, this will certainly help ease the burden. We have always had a program in place but with the success of the Sponsorship Program, NECMA and the DMF have been able to assist managers in their professional development like never before.

We have awarded one professional development scholarships this year: o Rodrigo Donascimento

Fall 2019

President: Rebecca Jones Vice President: Kaitlyn Boudreau Secretary: Devan Reeves Treasurer: Lauren Wilson

Since the beginning of the year, the UNH chapter has worked on increasing membership, getting acquainted with other student chapters, and networking with local club managers.

In January, we had one student help volunteer during the 1st NECMA Business Expo at the Harvard Club of Boston - interacting with managers and vendors.

In March, we were fortunate enough to tour The Country Club and The Harvard Club of Boston.

Later in the month, we sent students to the NECMA Spring Conference in which we networked with students and managers while touring Great Horse and MGM Springfield. We were also thankful to have held a fundraising raffle in supporting future conference travels.

In April, we spent a cold rainy-day touring Corinthian Yacht Club and Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA.

Over the summer, we had 5 students working in club management. • Rebecca Jones - Black Rock Country Club • Kaitlyn Boudreau - Lake Winnipesaukee Yacht Club • Amelia Smiaroski - Lake Winnipesaukee Yacht Club • Dana Bedard - Fenway Golf Club • Taylor Messina - Bellevue Golf Club

Membership has grown to roughly 15 student members, taking into account we hold a tight-knit organization in a smaller university.

Last month, we toured Portland Country Club and Woodlands Club in Falmouth, Maine.

We are looking forward to collaborating with student chapters, and hoping to have more appearances at NECMA events!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Jones University of New Hampshire '21 Hospitality Management

Wine Society Report Emily Goldman, CCM

At our Annual Wine Dinner, held at Wellesley Country Club, Ross Cohen from Classic Wines, took us through the parallels of Burgundy and its New World counterpart, Oregon, featuring producers such as Soter Vineyards, Domaine Serene Winery and Lingua Franca. Big thanks to Marty Ryan and his team for an outstanding evening!

12

During our “Rules & Brews” session at North Andover Country Club, Night Shift Brewing joined us for an informative session on the craft beer movement…and of course, we had ourselves a fun, little tasting too!

NECMA took on Nantucket this fall, paying Cisco Brewery and Triple Eight Distillery a visit for our meeting social. The property and company continue to grow and grow each year, so it was great to see what they have been up to this season.

With so many beverage treats at our fingertips right in our backyard, we look forward to the next year ahead as we plan to visit some of New England’s finest including Downeast Cider House, Bully Boy Distillery as well as new microbreweries that continue to pop up around town. Keep an eye out for upcoming Wine Society outings including a new version of our Annual Wine Dinner!

YoPro Committee Report Megan Spies

The YoPro Committee was created this year with the task of creating social and educational opportunities specifically designed for all members aged 40 and younger and typically in mid-management positions. The Committee consisted of Zach Adams, Josh Evans, Megan Spies and Cheryl Wisch.

The Committee decided to focus on social events as a way to introduce this new group to the Association members. The scheduled events were Night Shift Brewery in March, Bruegger’s Bagel in July, Urban Axes in August and The Westmoor Club tour in September. Although the attendance was not what the Committee had hoped for, we are looking at ways to develop the program and get better membership engagement for future events.

Respectfully Submitted, Megan Spies YoPro Committee Chair

Social Committee Report Carol Bliss, CCM and Megan Spies

The Social Committee had an active year of events providing great opportunities for managers to network outside of the formal education session setting.

On January 12th we hosted a holiday party at the Lanam Club. Members enjoyed good food, drink and camaraderie while dancing the night away. Thank you to Geoff Piva, General Manager at the Lanam Club, for hosting the event and assisting with the planning for the evening.

In February while at CMAA World Conference the Committee organized our annual chapter social at Nashville Underground. Thank you to Club Benchmarking and Condon, O’Meara, McGinty & Donnelly for their generous sponsorship of the event.

As a new initiative, the Committee has started to plan informal gatherings at local restaurants or bars following regularly scheduled education in an effort to give more opportunities to network and make connections. So far there have been two successful gatherings, one at Burton’s in April and a Back Bay pub crawl in July. We will continue to schedule these casual meet-ups throughout the next calendar of education events.

Respectfully Submitted, Carol Bliss, CCM and Megan Spies Social Committee Chairs

NECMA Foundation Annual Report 2019

2019 was an active year for the NECMA Foundation. Importantly, the New England Club Managers Association David Meador Foundation is now named the NECMA Foundation. The new moniker honors the long history and name recognition that NECMA, now the New England Chapter – CMAA, enjoyed in this region. Going forward, the student scholarships awarded by the New England Chapter & the NECMA Foundation will be named the David Meador Foundation Scholarships in order that the David Meador Foundation designation remain in use.

2019 saw a spectacular showing at the Myopia Hunt Club for the annual NECMA Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament. Early in the year, the Inaugural Business Exposition was a successful and seminal event on behalf of the Chapter and the Foundation. The Harvard Club of Boston provided a stunning backdrop for members and partners to engage in meaningful interaction with an exciting Battle of the Chefs and stellar educational panel bookending the day.

The NECMA Foundation continued to have its investment assets actively managed by Morgan Stanley’s Boardwalk Group and safeguarded by the Board of Directors. Total assets, including the Operating Fund, are currently in excess of $620,000. In accordance with its Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation, the Foundation uses those funds to continue to award student scholarships, reimburse student Conference registrations, issue professional development grants for BMI education and support Chapter education.

Last year, the Foundation voted to create a scholarship in the name of Lee Norton Kelly, our former Managing Director of DMF and former Managing Director of NECMA. We are pleased to announce that the Board voted in 2019 to continue the award of the Lee Kelly Memorial Scholarship on an annual basis. The candidates will continue to be drawn from children of NECMA members that are either entering college or currently enrolled in a four-year college or university. Paul Lazar, CCM and Steve Cummings, CCM, CCE comprise the 2019 Lee Kelly Memorial Scholarship Committee. Awards, totaling $4,000 in scholarship funds, will be presented at the NECMA Annual Meeting on October 21, 2019 to the following Lee Kelly Memorial Scholarship recipients: Madison Dugan, Hannah Dugan, Thomas Grandon and Mary Hanrahan.

The Foundation Board identified several opportunities during the year and prioritized the following:

*Name change operations *Review of the NECMA Foundation Golf Tournament *Creation of a new NECMA Foundation logo *FY2020 NECMA Foundation Budget completed and passed by vote of the Foundation Board *Planning for the 2nd Annual NECMA Foundation Business Exposition which will be held on Monday, January 13, 2019 at the Andover Country Club
