Barbicania Better Nature or our first issue of 2021, things are looking hopeful. We would love to come and give every single one of you a big positive Happy New Year hug, but that will Helen Hudson have to wait. Instead, we have been busy giving the website a facelift so that Fyou can view things more easily on mobile devices. We hope you love the new design and we are open to any website or social suggestions on how to make things even better. In a speech to the One Plan Summit of global leaders in Paris earlier this year, the UN secretary general, António Guterres, pleaded that “2021 must be the year to reconcile humanity with nature,” because “until now, we have been destroying our planet. We have been abusing it as if we have a spare one.” He’s not wrong! Data from the Red List of Threatened Species estimates that our actions are threatening about 1 in 8 species with extinction. We might not have vast tracts of forest on the doorstep, but we do have an enormous amount of wildlife within walking distance. In this issue, Julien Waite explains how we can help the biodiversity campaign at a local level and we share the pleasure and inspiration gifted by our gardens (and their caretakers) from the perspective of some of our younger residents in the local area: Killarney and Rose Watkins, Kabir Kaul and Matteo Hegarty. As the time is almost here to be thinking about our boxes, we have also included advice on Planting Green and for Biodiversity thanks to Nic Guerra (Barbican Gardener) and the Barbican Wildlife Group ([email protected]). Our minibeast buddy, Julien, also gives us the low down on beetles (and I must admit to feeling grateful that cockroaches fall under a different classification order) and Ben Thompson takes us on a crow-watching trip to Fortune Park. Christopher Makin celebrates the 18th birthday of our Barbican Estate Residents Consultation Committee and reflects on how residents are consulted on things which affect us. We haven’t been able to review restaurants over the lockdowns, and we’ve all been cooking a lot more at home, so I hope you’ll enjoy Adrien Giacchero’s pesto recipe. We’d love to hear how you do with this, so please send in your feedback and photos! At a recent Barbican Association meeting, Gilbert House mentioned that they had compiled a list of useful care information. Thanks to a very special group of Gilbert House residents who have painstakingly updated it for us. We’ll add all the information to our barbicanlife.com website and republish every so often in the magazine, so please send any related information or updates to us so that we can keep the info up to date for everyone. Fresh from interviews with Dr Clare Taylor from the City Music Foundation and Will Palin from Barts Heritage, Joanna Lyall gives us some background on their series of free monthly lunchtime recitals at Barts Great Hall. There is a concert a month and Joanna Please Save has included the calendar for the year. The Date The Culture Mile Imagine Packs distributed last December came as a welcome surprise 22nd April to many residents in the City and we have reprinted a couple of the activities in this issue, for the along with the backstory of how the ideas crystalised into the booklet. Barbican Peter Savage is strolling the streets for us and, in this issue, it is the The Cripplegate Institute behind Ben Jonson House which will enjoy our attention. Association Last but not least, Katharine Rumens (our Rector at St Giles’) is retiring and we’re AGM via torn: equal parts sad to see her go but also deliciously excited about what lays in store for Zoom. her. Enjoying nature’s gifts from the perspective of some of our younger residents

The Barbican Wildlife Garden is a real haven for the City’s biodiversity. It has a number of habitats, including ponds, complete with frogs; and a meadow, which in summer, has some spectacular wildflowers, attracting all sorts of bees and butterflies. There are a number of rarities too, including the Lesser Stag , which can be found among the piles of dead wood brought in from Epping Forest, and surprisingly, visitors can often see birds of prey, such as Sparrowhawks, Kestrels and Peregrine Falcons swooping over the garden! The bird hide provides an excellent spot to watch the many species of birds found in the Barbican’s gardens, including House Sparrows, which have severely declined in the City. All of this amazing wildlife is on your doorstep, and now is a great opportunity to start recording it. Recording species contributes towards vital conservation work, and helps us to understand the distribution of different species in a certain area. There are a few easy ways to record wildlife: you can download the British Trust for Ornithology’s BirdTrack app, and submit your sightings of birds when you are out in the Barbican’s gardens. You could also submit sightings of wildlife on Greenspace Information for Greater London’s website, and if you need help identifying a certain plant or , download the iNaturalist app and submit a photo of the species you would like to identify. There is so much wildlife to enjoy around the Barbican, so start recording your sightings! Kabir Kaul

The Snail in the Toilet By Matteo Hegarty One day I went to bathroom and saw a cute snail in the toilet. I was very surprised! How did the snail get in the toilet? I wished the snail could talk and tell but he just looked at me with his big eyes. I called my mum. She said, “I’ve put the snail in the toilet because it was eating the plants!”. “Mum, we need to rescue the snail”, I said. Mum said, “Let’s take it to the wildlife garden” It was slimy. I was not so scared and I picked the snail up and put it in a glass. The snail started to climb the sides of the glass. “No, stay inside!”, I said to the snail. But the snail did not listen to me and almost escaped. “Quick!”, I said, “We need to take it to the wildlife garden”. Mum and I put jackets on and off we went. Out in the garden it was very, very, very, very, very DARK! I could not see where I was walking and I fell down and dropped the glass with the snail. “Oh no!”, said mum. I felt very sad – my snail was gone! Suddenly I felt something wet and slimy crawling on my hand. It was the snail! I was very happy. I carried the snail very carefully and slowly until I arrived the pond. The pond was still and quiet. The frogs were sleeping. I thought we should put the snail away from the pond so that the frogs do not eat the snail. “Let’s hide it in the nettles”, I said. “That is a good idea”, said mum. And so we did. “Bye, bye little snail”, I said, “and live happily ever after”.

No Backbone Minibeasts of the Barbican Beetles

7-Spot Ladybird Meet the Beetles! Rose Stem Girdler (Agrilus cuprescens) (Coccinella septempunctata) iniature flying tanks, with over 400,000 species globally, beetles represent about 40% of known species and account for one Mquarter of all animals on the planet. They are distinguished by having a pair of front wings (forewings) that are typically modified into hard wing cases (elytra), which cover and protect the hind-wings and abdomen. Beetles also have biting mouthparts as opposed to the sucking mouthparts of true bugs (which we will look at in an a future article) and - like butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, ants and flies - undergo complete metamorphosis (egg → larva → pupa → adult). In the UK there are over 4,000 species of beetle across 100+ families such a species of weevil (Malvapion malvae) as ground beetles (Carabidae), rove beetles (Staphylinidae), ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae) and predaceous diving beetles (Dytiscidae). Black Clock Beetle Some species (such as the ground beetles) are solitary whereas others (like (Pterostichus madidus) the ladybirds) can be found in large clusters (aggregations). The body shape and size of beetles varies considerably. Ground beetles tend to have a flattened, oval body with regular ridges or groves. Aquatic beetles are smooth which enables them to move through water more easily and have long, hairy hindlegs that are used as paddles. Weevils are small with long snouts which the males use for jousting and the females for a predaceous diving beetle drilling holes into wood to lay their eggs. Stag beetles are big and the males (Family: Dytiscidae) have antlers which they wrestle with each other to impress the ladies.

Please Please Me The predatory ground beetles and rove beetles help to control the Lesser Stag Beetle populations of many insects by feeding on their eggs, larva and soft-bodied Dorcus paralellapipidus ( ) adult species. Ladybirds are highly beneficial to humans as both the larvae and adults feed on plant-sucking insects such as aphids. Other beetles are scavengers, breaking down dead logs (e.g. stag beetles), dead plant and animal matter (e.g. Rough-Haired Lagria Beetle larva) or excrement (e.g. Common Pollen Beetle dung beetles). Then there are the pollinators such as the Thick-Legged () Flower Beetle and Common Pollen Beetle. It’s not all about the bees and butterflies you know! However, not all beetles are beneficial to humans. Some (e.g. Rose Stem a rove beetle Girdler and weevils) destroy plants and others (e.g. Varied Carpet Beetle (Family: Staphylinidae) larva) can damage wooden furniture, carpets and clothing.

Beetles for Sale Many beetles are brightly coloured. Sometimes it’s a warning to predators that they’re toxic so not nice to eat. Ladybirds are a classic example of this and use pigments for their colour. However, the iridescent metallic look of other beetles (such as the Rosemary Beetle and Thick-Legged Flower Varied Carpet Beetle Beetle) that appear to gradually change in colour as the angle of view or (Anthrenus verbasci) angle of illumination changes is due to precise lattice-like microstructures. Thick-Legged Flower Beetle (Butterfly wings and peacock feathers are other examples.) It’s thought that (Oedemara nobilis) these colour changes confuse birds and other predators so acts as camouflage allowing the beetle to hide in plain sight. Unlike pigment this microstructure means these beetles (and butterflies) maintain their brilliant colours after death making them collectable to some. Personally I prefer seeing beetles alive although I’m looking forward to revisiting the Natural History Museum’s extensive (dead) beetle collection when we’re allowed out again!

Crow-Watching in our Local Park Ben Thompson’s thoughts take wing

n a recent walk through the city, I made an impromptu visit to Fortune Park. A recent discovery for me, I have fallen a little bit in love with this pocket-sized green space in the heart of London. I discovered it by accident. On a visit to theO Barbican Centre, I was walking along Whitecross Street when I saw something that I hadn't noticed before. Halfway along the row of shops and offices on the other side of the street, there was the mouth of a passageway. Curious about where it led, I crossed over and ventured in. Walking along it, I felt the press of walls on either side, the weight of lives being lived in the rooms stacked above me, then I stepped out again into space and light. People sat at picnic tables, chatting and drinking hot drinks. At the edge of the children's play area, a tall tree balanced a pale sky on its upper branches. Outside of the little cabin selling hot drinks, the aroma of coffee mingled with the sound of 6music. Fortune Park worked its charm on me and, over the coming months, I found myself making the trip from my home in Walthamstow as often as Crow I could. On the day of this particular visit, the season was taking a Earlier that week, I am walking to work on a blustery morning distinct turn towards autumn. There was a sharp chill in the air. A when a group of them catch my eye. A raggedy murder of crows sweetgum tree which stood at one corner of a grassy area blushed is flying around the top of a recently-built tower block. They are a deep red. Walking past it on my way to a bench, I noticed that scraps of a pirate flag, shredded and tossed about by the wind. I the ground directly beneath the tree was completely bare as if its stop to watch them for a moment. They push out into the sky, the shadow had burned the grass away. roof of the tower at their backs. From here they could fly along Sitting on the bench tucking into an apple, I watched a crow taking off from the roof of a block of flats. The crow flew diagonally up until he was just clear of the edge of the roof and then curved over into a downwards glide. He swooped towards the street below, pulling away from the building as he fell so that the line of his flight described an elegant curve. It was a compelling thing, this small moment of drama happening just outside the boundary of the park, compelling in its quietness, in the speed and the certainty of the crow's flight.

the railway track as it arrows north towards Walthamstow Central and Wood Street beyond. Or they could fling their shadows across Selborne Way and over the multi-storey carpark with its corkscrewing access ramp. And yet none of them seem to be making any headway. Even as they push out into the sky, they are just as soon circling back again. The tower reels them in as if it has them under a spell. No such fate for the Fortune Park crow. He sprang up from the roof of the block of flats and the next second he was gone, dipping behind a row of trees and disappearing from view. What he did next I can't say. Maybe he settled on a branch or maybe he flapped darkly up Golden Lane. I looked back up at the rooftop. It was empty again. He might never have been there.

Skedaddle (L’Escampette) by Jean Dubuffet

This is the first major UK exhibition of the work of this artist, in over 50 years. Jane Allison, Head of Visual Arts Barbican says: I could not be more thrilled that we are staging Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty, at the Barbican, where his sculpture, paintings, collage and drawings will feel perfectly at home. Dubuffet marveled at the fabric of everyday life – an alchemist experimenting with dust and dirt, conjuring visual gold. So many artists: from David Hockney, to Eva Hesse, Robert Smithson, and Jean-Michel Basquiat have been influenced by his playful spirit and experimental drive. I have no doubt that this exhibition, the first to show his work in the UK for over 50 years, will be an utter joy. *At the time of writing and in terms of dates information is: “Following government guidance, the Barbican is currently closed to the public. The rescheduled dates for Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty will be announced in Wall and Opinions (Murs et Avis) by Jean Dubuffet due course”.

JAPANDI – an exciting new trend. This is the marriage of two well-loved styles. The best of Scandinavian interiors is blended with the Japanese aesthetic to create Japandi. A modern taken on minimalism with sleek lines, neutral colour schemes and calming arrangements enabling natural materials to take centre stage. The pale white wash Scandinavian stage is cut through with striking silhouettes in solid dark colours for an unfussy sleek style. Goodbye from Charterhouse Physio

Dear Good Friends, Patients and Neighbours, e are leaving this wonderful part of London soon to concentrate on our West End physio practice at 55 Harley St, W1G 8QR. I started the WCity practice originally in January 1992 in Cloth Fair, opposite St Barts the Great, the same year as Four Weddings and a Funeral came out. I remember, greatly daring, offering my business card to the actors as they were waiting to go on set! Since then more filming has taken place in this historic church. Eight years ago we then moved next door and were sited on 64/65 Long Lane and have shared premises with Dentistry 100, a very happy unit. Suzanne, my Practice Manager, will remain in our office here to look after things. Home visits are still offered to all patients either in the Barbican area or West End. When I first moved down to London from Fife, aged 17 and completely out of my depth in such an impossibly large city, it was Katharine who helped me feel welcome in London. She is one of my favourite people, a wonderful mix of wit and wisdom, and I often think fondly on our evenings sharing stories and food together in the vicarage. Essa Flett

Katharine’s success in overcoming the slings and arrows at the start of her ministry to the which will lead to a triumphant exit leaves us, in the parish, with a gaping hole and having to find that very special candidate who may be able to continue Katharine’s legacy. Anonymous

No church musician could wish for a more visionary, caring, or practical boss than Katharine. Everyone at St Giles, whether worshipping, performing, or learning to play the organ, has enjoyed her warm welcome, and been inspired, as I have, by her special brand of Christian leadership. Her consideration for colleagues is unique, enabling us all to contribute to our best ability; working with her has been enlightening, enabling and fun. Cometh the hour, cometh the man (or in Katharine's case, woman). She drew the parish close during this pandemic, encouraging the kind of pastoral care that is deeply rooted in spirituality and the faith community. She has turned a negative into a positive; depletion into enrichment. She will be terribly missed. Richenda & John
