‘With a stretched arm. Like Superman, not like Hitler’. The Politics of Commemorative Irreverence in Astronaut van Oranje (2013) by Andy Fierens and Michaël Brijs ‘Met gestrekte arm. Zoals Superman, niet zoals Hitler’. De uitdagingen van het culturele geheugen in Astronaut van Oranje (2013) van Andy Fierens en Michaël Brijs Jan Lensen, Freie Universität Berlin Abstract. This essay offers an analysis of the aesthetical and political implications of the seemingly random use of names of figures from Belgian collaborationist history in the novel Astronaut van Oranje (2013) by Flemish authors Andy Fierens and Michaël Brijs. More specifically, it investigates the framing of the memory of World War II in Belgium by means of a satirical fantasy story that fuses elements from the dystopian imagination, science fiction, Gothic horror, and popular culture. Drenched in satire, hyperbole, absurdities, coarse humor, and blatant clichés, the novel eschews historiographical relevance and deliberately ignores the sensibilities that govern public and political discourses about this war past. By doing so, so I argue, it offers a provocative engagement with established practices in both Belgian and Flemish cultural memory, implementing what I will call a ‘politics of commemorative irreverence’. While the comical presentation of affliction is considered the privilege of those subjected to it (the insiders and, by extension, their descendants), the permission to laugh at perpetrators is tied to the condition of not being one (the outsiders, although this category is obviously much more difficult to demarcate). -

Het zijn leden van de gymnastiekafdeling van het Gentse liberale werkliedengenootschap Geluk in ‘t Werk. Het kunstje dat ze vertonen is de vrucht van een gemeenschappelijke doelstelling, heldere afspraken, onderling vertrouwen en heel veel oefening. Harmonie en gelijkwaardigheid tussen de twee vleugelturners, die hun handelingen nauwgezet op elkaar moeten afstemmen en elkaars spiegelbeeld lijken, is essentieel om in het opzet te slagen. Toen ik deze foto voor het eerst bekeek en situeerde, maakte ik me de bedenking dat ik de afgelopen vier jaar misschien wel aspecten van een soortgelijke evenwichtsoefening heb bestudeerd, eentje die inmiddels al 185 jaar voortduurt en waarvan de verhouding tussen de verschillende componenten minder harmonieus is verlopen dan bij de turners van Geluk in ’t Werk. Maar vooral dacht ik bij mezelf dat ik de afgelopen vier jaar ook veel vreugde en ‘geluk in ’t werk’ heb gekend. Eerst en vooral wil ik daar Marnix Beyen, Dave Sinardet en Jef Verschueren voor bedanken. -

Het Juristenblad 1941–1944 Periodicals enable (legal) historians to construct a trustworthy picture of past events. They are seen as mirrors or seismographs of cultural and social processes in a society and legal periodicals are no exception to that. They register day-to-day legal culture and reflect its evolution over a longer period. On the crossroads of many sociological groups, they externalize the opinion of editors and authors making the content not always (politically) neutral. One of those ‘unneutral’ legal reviews was Het Juristenblad, a collaborationist legal journal published during the Second World War. Its editors and authors tried to convince Belgium’s legal world that a New Legal Order was dawning and spread this idea through the journal, but were they successful? 1. Wies Moens as a Cultural Mediator in Times of War During the Second World War, the relations between the peoples and cultures involved were redefined, not only politically but also culturally. Cultural mediators between Flanders and Germany sought to clarify and strengthen the relationship between both cultures, aided by the German cultural policy that was explicitly anti-French. Wies Moens was a central figure in this process of cultural mediation as a writer, translator and public intellectual. His translation of the Finnish epic Kalevala fed the idea of kinship between the Germanic cultures. Also with his translation of Hölderlin he took a cultural-political position – one which exposed the scope of his network to boot. His translation of Flemish war poetry finally shows Moens’ hope that the planned cultural transfer would not be exclusively unidirectional. Both his rhetoric and his actions during the Second World War show Wies Moens as a constant mediator and bridge builder between Flanders and Germany. -

During the First World War some young Flemish intellectuals and writers took advantage of the German Flamenpolitik (the occupation politics in Flanders) in order to realise a number of socio-political, economic and linguistic goals in Flanders. The bourgeois and higher social classes, as well as the Belgian government, were only French speaking at that time. This agitation by Flemish artists and historians, politicians and writers is called activisme. Some of them strived for a Diets (a reunited Dutch-speaking) nation, based on a unifying idea of ‘Great-Netherland’ sentiments (Groot-Nederland). One of those ‘Diets’ writers was Wies Moens. His idea of a ‘Great-Dutch’ nation included not only the Nether- lands and Flanders, but also the Afrikaans-speaking part of the South-African population. In the twenties Moens stood up for a cultural notion of the ‘Diets’ ideas, in the thirties and during the Second World War he gave it a more radical political-ideological significance. This paper focuses on the way young activists and Flemish nationalism at the end of the 19th century, and more particularly in the first decades of the 20th century, made use of the white Afrikaner nationalism, and more specifically the mystification of the (second) Anglo-Boer War, to enforce their own political message.
