  • “Ready to Die” 1994–2017 MA CCC CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS
“Ready To Die” 1994–2017 MA CCC CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS 1 F.Sargentone march 2017 ed: /2 2 READY TO BE The Anti-Cinematographic eye Writing an introduction to this publication has probably been one of the most difficult things I have ever done in the recent years. I thought it could have been easy to talk about one of the most influential records of the whole music history. It turned out that this loose, A5 –sized, home printed book- let is the only existing monographic work on Notorius B.I.G.’s Ready To Die. By stating this at the beginning of the sup- posed dissertation, I want to make sure that the reader could read these lines as the raw output of a deep, although instinc- tive, research on one of the milestones of hip-hop cultural history. The research pro- cess, of which this booklet testifies the ma- terial result, has been spontaneous, in the sense that did not started as a canonical research question, but instead it happened a posteriori, being the record a very famil- iar matter for me since ages. As you will see, the lyrics of the songs contained within Ready To Die are formal- ly printed –without any additional editing– from RapGenius, a world famous website collecting lyrics and anecdotes of hip-hop songs from users. The oral history com- ponent of this platform is an essential el- ement shared with early hip-hop culture, in which realities existed and formalised themselves only via word of mouth or so- cio-cultural affinity with the hip-hop phe- nomenon.

Jenni Hopkin '9 "Our cla accepted the role a leader , and even though they don't admit it, the entir tudent body bow. d wn to u ." Mike Orchard '97 2 Opening Unknown by Mike Creen As we wandered the halls of Assumption, few of us realized exactly what was happening. The 1 996-97 school year was one that could hap pen but once in a lifetime. The students made the year truly exciting, and the atmosphere in the building was something which will never be recaptured. It was truly something special. As they look to the future, the underclass men are excited about the possibilities of their destination, but they also realize that the road can take unexpected turns. With the lessons they have learned and the experiences they have overcome these classes look ready to take on whatever life throws at them. As the oldest in the school the seniors brought a new unity which spread to every as pect of student life. With outstanding competi tors and strong support, the class of '97 led by example and kept Assumption on top. Although we walked confident and united throughout the school year, our future is un known.

  • Go-Go Forever
mtv news FEATURE GO-GO FOREVER THE RISE, FALL, AND AFTERLIFE OF WASHINGTON, D.C.’S ULTIMATE RHYTHM 06/14/2017 MTV ERICKA BLOUNT DANOIS Ericka Blount Danois is based in Baltimore and writes about music and culture. Her first book, 'Love, Peace and Soul,' about the show 'Soul Train,' was published in 2013. We had made plans to walk the more than 10 treacherous blocks to the show that Saturday autumn night in the Chocolate City. So we walked from my friend Cheryl's building on 14th and Fairmont Streets all the way to The Black Hole, one of the most popular go-go spots in town, strolling past hustlers and the infamous Clifton Terrace projects as we went. We weren't in heels, like most girls going to nightclubs. We wore New Balance tennis shoes with our Guess jeans. At The Black Hole, you had to be prepared to run at any moment. In Washington, D.C.'s 1980s go-go scene, The Black Hole was what CBGB was to punk rock, what The Paradise Garage was to dance music. You couldn't call yourself a true go-go head if you'd never stepped past its hefty bodyguards after wading through the mass of bodies stretching down Georgia Avenue whenever a show was happening. It was a hole in the wall, really — a former car garage that regularly packed in excess of 400 sweaty teenagers. And it was our spot to hear uncut go-go, dance all night, and be seen. Dancing there was the closest thing that a non- churchgoer could find to catching the spirit at a Pentecostal church, and as close to a juke joint as a saved soul could experience.
