Winter ways to work on early literacy skills Letter Recognition and Beginning Letter Sounds Collect food for a food pantry. Take your child to the grocery store and let your child pick out the food to donate. Practice what each item is called, point to the beginning letter of the item, and say the letter sound together. Vocabulary and Rhyming Words Work on vocabulary words with your child by making a holiday shopping list together. While shopping, ask your child to remember what items are called and then try to think of other words that rhyme!

Other Fun Winter Activity Ideas • Find instructions online or in a library craft book to create a no-sew scarf or cuddly blanket, then snuggle up together! • Watch a seasonal classic, such as Frosty the Snowman, and talk to your child about it afterward. What happened in the movie? Can you create an alternate ending? What do you think would happen to the characters if there was a sequel?
