Abstract While the purpose of social studies is to prepare students for civic life, there exists an over reliance of teacher-centered, motivationally controlling methods of instruction utilized in even the most advanced secondary-level social studies courses. These methods and educational practices are creating learning environments in which students experience varying degrees of passivity and subordination. In this project, an alternative approach to AP social studies courses was explored as a way to address the discord between rhetoric and reality existent in advanced social studies education courses. This action research study sought to explore how the use of discussion pedagogy could be employed to create an intersection among the purpose of social studies, the goals of AP courses, and the role of student autonomy in classroom learning environments.     National Federation of State High School Associations The Case for High School Activities INTRODUCTION The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and its member state asso- ciations champion interscholastic athletics and performing arts activities because they promote citizenship and sportsmanship in the 12 million students who participate nationwide. Activity programs instill a sense of pride in school and community, teach lifelong lessons and skills of teamwork and self-discipline, and facilitate the physical and emotional development of the nation’s youth. There is no better time than now to assert “The Case for High School Activities.” Education and community leaders across America need the facts contained in this material documenting the benefits of participation in interscholastic sports, music, theatre, debate and other activities, to provide support needed for these programs. These activities provide important develop- mental experiences that enrich a student’s high school experience and entire life, and these programs must be protected and sustained. Cost Benefit At a cost of only one to three percent (or less in many cases) of an overall school’s budget, high school activity programs are one of today’s best bargains. It is in these vital programs – sports, music, speech, theatre, debate – where young people learn lifelong lessons that comple- ment the academic lessons taught in the classroom. From a cost standpoint, activity programs are an exceptional bargain when matched against the overall school district’s education budget. Examinations of various school districts’ budget information across the country reveal that activity programs make up very small percentages of school budgets.

Arp, Jr. (District 9) Others Present: Theodore Voorhees, City Manager Karen McDonald, City Attorney Kristoff Bauer, Deputy City Manager Jay Reinstein, Assistant City Manager Lisa Harper, Assistant City Attorney Scott Shuford, Development Services Director Karen Hilton, Planning and Zoning Manager Craig Harmon, Senior Planner Tracey Broyles, Budget and Evaluation Director Jacques Howard, Economic Development Director Pamela Megill, City Clerk Members of the Press 1.0 CALL TO ORDER Mayor Robertson called the meeting to order. 2.0 INVOCATION The invocation was offered by Pastor Goodman, Cliffdale Christian Center. 3.0 PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag was led by Mayor Robertson and City Council. 4.0 ANNOUNCEMENTS AND RECOGNITION Mayor Robertson announced that Mayor Pro Tem Davy and Council Member Jensen were participants in the marathon event this past weekend. Mayor Robertson announced the Jack Britt High School Wrestling Team won the 4A State Championship. Mayor Robertson announced the Terry Sanford High School Boys’ Basketball Team won the 3A State Championship. Coach Bill Boyette and Team Members were each presented with a Certificate of Accomplishment. Coach Boyette stated it is an honor for him and the team to be recognized at a City Council meeting, and thanked the Mayor and Council for their continued support.
