GPS Old Boys Brief History

GPS Old Boys Rugby Club is the successor in name to the Past Grammar School Football Club and it is the oldest surviving Rugby Club in Queensland and also one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in Australia. The Club was officially formed in 1887 and consisted of a combination of both past and present Brisbane Grammar School players although a number of them represented Queensland as Past Grammar players in 1885 and 1886.

In 1889 the Past Grammar School Football Club was established as a separate identity distinct from the old side with its mix of past and present players. The formation of the Club was formalised at a meeting held at the Treasury Hotel in Brisbane on the 5th March 1891 and Mr. R.H. Roe, the Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School was elected as President. Sir Charles Lilley and Sir Samuel Griffith, among others, were elected as Vice Presidents. It was decided that the Club colours would be red and white. Rugby was not played in Queensland from 1916 until reintroduced in 1928 at which time, under a new name, the BGS Old Boys’ Rugby Union Football Club again took its place in the Brisbane competition.

In 1930 the constitution of the Club was changed to allow past students from the other GPS schools to become members and although the name was retained that year it was later changed to GPS Old Boys’ Rugby Club and it played under that name for the first time in the 1931 season and has continued to be known and play under that name to the present day in the recognised blue and green jerseys. The constitution was again changed some years later and membership of the club is now unrestricted.

Forty-six of the Club’s members have played for Australia and one hundred and ninety- two have played for Queensland. Seven have captained Australian senior teams, two the Australian sevens team and one has represented and captained England and another Scotland. In all nine former members have played international football whilst playing with other clubs.

In more recent times the overall strength of the Club has been reflected in the results of the Doughty Shield Club Championship competition: - 2006 – first, 2007 – second, 2008 – first, 2009 – second, 2010 – third, and in the number of teams fielded in Brisbane competitions: - eleven in 2008, and twelve in 2009. In 2010 Jeeps fielded eleven teams and won five premierships and four teams were finalists. In 2011 nine of ten teams reached the finals with three winning Premierships and two being Runners Up. In 2012, seven of the ten teams reached the finals series with 3 being Minor Premiers. This year 6 of 9 teams made the finals with 3 Minor Premierships, 2 Premierships and 2 Runners-up.

7 GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2013

President’s Report

As President of GPS Old Boys Rugby Club I have the distinct pleasure in putting together our Presidents report for the 2013 season.

Much water had flowed under the Yoku Road Rugby Bridge in the past year. A new General Manager – Matthew Turner, a new President and a whole new Executive Team, to which the club is very grateful. Peter Mc Whirter, Peter Selwood, Peter Rogers, Denis Frisby, David Straker, John Richards, Brogan Melit & Tony Mee. Each member of this year’s committee shared their insights, their passion, their knowledge and much of their time to make 2013 a most memorable season. Special thanks also must go to their respective partners who allowed them the time to help make the difference at our Rugby Club.

While on field results is what we all strive for, it must be said that financially the club is in a strong position, due to much of the hard work, cultural change and tough decisions that were enforced throughout the year. I’m sure everyone will agree with me when I say, we’re on the Road to somewhere pretty Special.

Steps have been taken and the merge of the Senior and Junior Clubs looks very likely. I can only see positives for both organizations moving forward with our objective being having a GPS Rugby player for life. Age 6 to 36 and longer Gus if you wish? Howard Murray had worked hard along with many others to ensure this seamless merger lives up to all expectations. A positive move for all concerned.

2013 on field was a great year for the club. We finished Minor Premiers in Premier Grade, First Grade and Third Grade. We made finals in 6 separate divisions, 5 in grades and Colts 1. We were victorious in winning The Third grade and Fourth Grade Grand Finals. A great team effort and all coaches, managers and players should be very proud of their season’s efforts.

The celebration we had back at the club post Grand Final said it all for me. We acknowledged all of our 4 Grand Final teams, from 4th, 3rd, 1st and of course Premier Grade for a job well done. We didn’t get the result we so desperately wanted in Premier Grade or First Grade, but with disappointment comes opportunity. I’m sure all players will see the 2014 season as unfinished business and strive to reverse the results next year.

To all the coaches, managers, support staff, strength & conditioning staff, physios, doctors and administration. I’d like to say a big thank you for all your time and efforts you displayed throughout the season to make this year as enjoyable as it was. To all the players, from our Social Seconds (colts 2) through to Premier Grade, I know we all tried, we all made sacrifices and we all became better people for our efforts. One thing we need to ensure is that we continue to strive for excellence, we are constantly trying to improve ourselves both on and off the field and we essentially enjoy being part of this very special Rugby Club, as we march for premiership victory. 2014 season is already underway for so many people. I hope to see you all around the club next year as we go even bigger and better and wish to dream.

I would also like to say thank you to Martin Silec and his band of merry men, who on a Saturday Morning set up our Rugby Club to be the show piece it is. All the fencing, signage and tents really add to the day at Yoku Road and we all appreciate their efforts and the contribution it makes financially to the club. It will be bigger and better in season 2014, so join in the fun that is Home Day and GPS Rugby.

Our club wouldn’t exist without the support of our members and sponsors alike. I would like to say a huge thanks to our major Sponsors – as listed; I would also like to acknowledge our First XV Sponsors – as listed. Without Community and Corporate support like what we have at GPS Rugby, we couldn’t run the events, put our players on the field and create something pretty special at Yoku Road 9 times a year, so on behalf of the player’s, a huge thanks.

I would also like to thank our jersey sponsors throughout the club – Premier Insurance, Colle Rosso, Tyres and More, Rode Pools, Flash Print, Hotel LA and BMag.

I would also like to thank the State and Federal Governments for their interest in our fine club. Number one supporter and Premier of Queensland Campbell Newman MP, has been very helpful in

8 GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 helping the club secure much needed funds along with the Honourable Theresa Gambaro MP who also pledged $250,000 to the rugby club. Funding is always very difficult to source, but with their help we now have much improved and the opportunity to improve our Club’s facilities further.

I would also like to say thanks to Rob Melloy. His efforts to collate and update the Annual records and reports, update the web page, Facebook and Twitter, take photo’s at all home and away matches and functions held by the club is immeasurable. Sincerely special thanks to Rob.

To all our other volunteers and canteen a staff huge thanks. I would like to single out two helpers – Ian Hodgetts who came in one day a week for most of the year to help Matt and also Donna Meredith for co-coordinating the canteen for the year.

I would also like to thank our Junior Club, our new and existing membership base and I look forward to being around the club for 2014 and beyond.

All the best and thanks for your efforts

9 GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2013

Rugby Report

The 2013 season was a successful one for the club with a number of significant goals being achieved. The club fielded nine teams in 2013, with six of these qualifying for the finals series. Of these six, three were crowned as minor premiers in their respective grades.

In the Premier and Brisbane rugby competitions, Premier Grade, 1st Grade and 3rd Grade all finished the home-and-away season as Minor Premiers, with 3rd Grade backing this achievement up with a well-deserved Grand Final win. Unfortunately, both Premier Grade and 1st Grade fell one game short in 2013. However, their respective appearances in the Grand Finals ensured GPS were well represented on the premier day for Queensland Club Rugby. While Premier Grade had a tremendous season in 2013, that elusive 1st premiership since 1996 is still a major goal for the club. With the improvements made this season, I’m confident that goal is achievable in the not-to-distant future.

4th Grade backed up their premiership win in 2012, with a repeat performance in 2013. Congratulations on this fine achievement. 5th Grade also represented the club during the finals series, but unfortunately bowed out to a well-drilled Souths outfit.

The 2013 GPS Colts Program produced mixed results, with the club’s flagship colts team, Premier Colts, finishing 7th. While the Premier Colts team performed admirably at times, their inconsistency was their ‘Achilles Heel’. The team won matches that they were expected to drop and equally dropped games that they should have probably won. With a young team in 2013, high hopes are held for this team improving their placing in 2014. Colts 1 had a better year, eventually finishing 3rd when beaten by Souths in the preliminary final. While the team had some highlights in 2013, consistent attendance at training proved a challenge. The Colts 2 team had a more difficult year with a trying draw and a lack of varied competition proving to be a hurdle. However, the team always displayed great spirit and while the results were not always forthcoming, did enjoy their rugby during the year.

Congratulations to all players, coaches, managers and support staff for their efforts in 2013. To have the club represented on Grand Final Day in four of the top five grades in Queensland Premier Rugby is an achievement in itself. We are clearly the envy of many clubs in Brisbane, and while we can always improve each year, at times we need to reflect on our immediate achievements. Thank you to all of our coaches, managers and support staff who admirably perform their duties as volunteers, and do it with the pride of representing the club.

The Presentation Dinner proved to be a successful night in 2013, with over 180 attending the event. Congratulations to all of the award winners on the night. A special mention to the GPS Rugby Clubman of the Year – Brogan Melit. Brogan has performed the rugby director role in 2013 in a charismatic, friendly but highly professional manner. His assistance in putting together the rugby program is reflected with the results the club achieved this year. Once again – thank you.

Thank you to our Club Captain in Byron Roberts for your efforts throughout the year. In what must have been a frustrating year for Byron personally with his injury, it would have been very easy for him to sit back and simply recuperate. To the contrary, Byron got stuck into his role as Club Captain in rallying support for club events, assisting on match day and being a key part of the Premier Grade support staff.

Congratulations to all of the players who achieved significant playing milestones in 2013. While there were quite a few who surpassed 100 Club Games in 2013, three players achieved the rare feat of playing their 200th match for GPS Rugby Club. Cameron King, Liam Ferguson and Mark Donaldson all achieved this milestone in 2013. Well done on a great knock!

Our home games in 2013 continued to be a highlight for the club. Opposition teams know when they visit Yoku Road every year, they will find a parochial crowd to deal with. A great deal of effort from a great number of people goes into putting our home game days together. From the set-up crew that start at 6:00am, to the teams that pull down the fields at 6:00pm, thank you all for your support. Our home games continue to be the envy of all of the other clubs in Brisbane and to maintain this status requires great support from so many people.

It would be remiss of me to not acknowledge the unwavering support that the club has received from the committee in 2013. Under the untiring efforts and direction of President Anthony Herbert, these 10 GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 gentlemen have devoted a great deal of time and effort into the club’s operations in 2013. The club has been successful both on and off the field this season, and it’s through the leadership of this group that this has been achieved. Congratulations.

In closing the 2013 season, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank every volunteer who has assisted during the year. The club is only as strong as the effort that is put into it. As the sole employee of the senior club, I have received great support from many people within the club. Volunteers are the heart of any club and through the collective effort of all; we have had a great year. With a number of exciting initiatives for the club in the near future, I’m confident that 2014 will be an even bigger year for the club. I look forward to seeing you all involved again next year as we collectively strive to maintain our position as Brisbane’s Premier Rugby Club.

Colts Report

Season 2013 is one that will not go down in the annals of GPS Colts rugby. Having only one team in semi-finals means this is the least successful season for over a decade. There are a number of factors that were the drivers for this lack of success and these need to be addressed before next year.

Quality recruitment needs to begin as soon as possible after each season and intending players should know who the coaching staff are so that they are able to commit to the club and be sure that the pathway offered is what they are looking for to improve their rugby.

The successful clubs in Premier Colts during the season (namely University and Brothers) went for size in their new players and GPS were always behind the eight ball in this regard. This has been the case for some years (with one notable exception in 2010 when a Premier Colts premiership was won). It seems that, in rugby, size does matter. Our lack of size, not skill, was an undoing on many occasions, a factor noted by several opposition coaches.

Colts 1 fell at the preliminary final stage beaten by a very well organised Souths team who just outpaced them on the day. Wins against Sunnybank on two consecutive weekends, the first one to secure a place in the semi-finals and the second to progress to the penultimate day, were outstanding efforts by a team beset all season by injury and unavailability of players.

The Colts 2 competition was the poorest it has been for many seasons with only five clubs fielding teams. GPS were seldom in the race for a semi final spot and a lack of commitment on the part of a number of the players was obvious throughout the year.

Summary In closing, I would like to record my gratitude to the coaches, support staff and many of the players for the amount of work that was put in to the 2013 season across the Colts Program. You should be proud of your efforts. There are things that were done well and things done not so well. If we identify which is which, and maximise the good while minimising the poor, results next season will be more positive.

Let us make sure that more success is forthcoming and that the Colts graduates continue their rugby with this wonderful club.

Thank you to General Manager Matt Turner, to the Club Committee, headed by President Anthony Herbert, and especially to Brogan Melit for the positive support given to the rugby program throughout 2013.Our club would not be in the great state it is if it were not for the many volunteers who work long hours to ensure we are so well serviced and the envy of other clubs in Brisbane. Well done to each and every one.

Each team has produced its own report for this publication and I commend them to your reading.

Terry Donovan, Colts Director.

2013 will be remembered as a season of many highs, but one that fell just short of the main prize - the Premier Rugby Premiership, losing in a gripping and hard fought grand-final to a well-drilled Easts side.

After losing a few key players to professional contracts overseas and interstate, not many gave GPS a chance of returning to the finals scene. However, the return of Grant Jenkins to Strength and Conditioning coach got the side prepared with a great preseason under their belts. This allowed the team to start their season off with two solids wins against the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. The first real test of the season came against Easts at Bottomley Park. This was a torrid and physical game, and the Jeeps pack stood tall to take the points from the game. This generated a lot of belief in the side and gelled them together. The team continued their winning ways – including a last minute try to steal a victory vs Norths at Shaw Sports on a Saturday night, and solid victories against Wests and Souths at home. The team then had earned the right to play against Brothers in a top of the table clash in front of a massive and vocal crowd at Yoku Road. Brothers were highly fancied for the attack, but the resolute GPS defence held them tryless for 80 minutes, taking the victory 10-6. Daniel Gorman was instrumental with some intimidating hits in defence, and his fellow backrowers Liam Ferguson and Jono Ellis were able to prevent the Brethern assembling their renowned attack by strangling their ball supply. GPS now sat top of the table, and had done so without the services of some key men such as Samu Kerevi and Phil Kite who were away on Australian under 20s duties. The side then stuttered on the last 2 rounds of the match, losing narrowly to Sunnybank away and drawing with University at Uni in an entertaining affair.

The slide in form culminated with a loss to the last placed Gold Coast in the first match of the 2nd round. Jeeps were low on personal due to injury and personal commitments, but raced out to a 26 nil lead with 5 backrowers in the pack. From there, they struggled to hold out a large Gold Coast pack. The side regrouped, started working harder at training and going back to basics. This paid off with a great win against the Sunshine Coast. From there the side hit form again, disposing of Easts in a great game at Yoku Road, followed by a massive win against Wests away and a grinding bonus point win against Norths, which Liam Ferguson played his 100th A-grade game for the Gallopers. At this point we lost Radike Samo to Japan, and some other players left for overseas contracts. The remaining players did not miss a beat, and Captain Jono Ellis led by example by moving forward into the second row. The side found a sharp-shooting goal kicker in Nick Zangari, and Liam McWhirter was marshalling his backline around the field. The side put in an incredible defensive effort led by Ryan Freney and Nate Nicol upfront against Souths away to stay in touch with Brothers at the top of the table. GPS then journeyed out to Crosby Park to meet Brothers in the top of the table clash and fight for the Welsby Cup. GPS came to play, and the forward pack dominated their counterparts. Some great tries were scored, including an effort by Mark Donaldson, and Mitch King was able to put in his best performance to date in a season punctuated by frustrating injuries thus far. The highlight of the game was a grubber kick by Nick Frisby for his prop Phil Kite out wide, who regathered, popped inside for a great try. The win was a large victory at Crosby to GPS 48-5. Unfortunately the side did not back up the next week, losing heavily to University at home, which had some supporters worried about meeting Uni in the finals. However the side recovered with an emphatic victory over a star studded Sunnybank side at home.

GPS were disappointing in the major semi-final loss to Easts. However, the following week, GPS came out and smashed a University side favoured by many to win the premiership. The back three of Kirisi Kuridrani, Semiti Tela and Tood Winkley had the University backline in a tangle, and Liam McWhirter completely outplayed his opposite number, Wallaby Mike Harris. GPS met Easts again in the title decider, and played much better, but were guilty of a poor start which cannot happen in a grand final. The boys played to the death but came up agonisingly short to another quality club side in Easts. Congratulations to Cameron King, Liam Ferguson and Mark Donaldson on playing 200 club games for their beloved GPS. Further congratulations to Samu Kerevi and Kirisi Kuridrani on gaining professional contracts with the QLD Reds for 2014 for their efforts for their team. Ryan Freney earned best forward for his continuous high standard of play throughout the season, and Samu Kerevi was obvious choice for Best and Fairest.

Thank you to the coaching staff of Shane Arnold, Brett Picone and Pete Wilkins, the Managers Tim Ferguson & Byron Roberts and Hydration specialist Matt Richards. The boys enjoyed their season mostly due to the culture created by this enthusiastic coaching staff, and the obvious time and effort that was put in for the benefit of the team. Thank you to the GPS Committee for your support in 2013, but most of all thank you to the supporters, members and volunteers that make Jeeps the best place in Australia to play club rugby. We hope we gave you something to cheer about in 2013.

Brisbane First Grade

Coaches: Nick Fogarty, Scott McMullen, Sio Kite, Alex Corley (M), Michelle Bennie (M)

After the success of the previous two seasons achieving a hat trick of Grand Final successes was going to be a very difficult task but something most of last year’s team had been thinking about for almost 12 months. For two and a half seasons now Jeeps First Grade have been the stand out in the Reggies competition, only losing five out of 48 games while playing a brand of football which was not only very effective but also very attractive. With the retirement of some very influential players at the end of season 2012 there was a level of uncertainty if First Grade could go all the way and give the Premiership another shake.

The first half of the competition saw strong wins against most sides. The Round 6 clash against the Souths Magpies proved to be the toughest of the round. A lot of simple errors and players not following the game plan resulted in First Grades first loss at home in more than two seasons.

Another big game was the Grand Final replay against Souths. The Green and Blue ran out winners 25-17. It was a very costly victory with the loss of luckless second rower Andrew Poulton with a broken lower leg. This is the second season in a row where Poulton’s season has been cut short by injury.

Stand outs in the first 9 rounds included (in no special order) Ciaran McWhirter, Damien Stower, Michael Richards, Michael Atkinson, Josh Logan, Cam King, Mitch Fuller and Mark Donaldson. Nicky Tuvitu, Andrew Poulton, Nick Zangari, Damien Stower, Isaac Wier, Curtis Franks, Vili Fanigaa and Dave Howard

At the end of the first round GPS were still on top of the ladder with only two losses with Souths and Uni only a couple of points behind on the competition table.

The second round was special for Reggies winning nine games on the trot with some very impressive scores. Standout players included Matty Garland, Mitch Fuller, Curtis Franks, Romain Cortes, Peter Tweson, Cam King, Vili Fanigaa, Isaac Wier, Michael Atkinson, Pompey Toolis, Dave Howard, Josh Logan, Jake Milne, Josh Pszczonka, Gavin Murphy, Scott Malolua, Jake Beacroft, Damien Stower, Ciaran McWhirter, James Herbert, Nicky Tuvitu, and Kevin Bracken

One of the best games was the clash against Sunnybank at Ashgrove. It proved to be, at times, a very free flowing affair. The return of Ciaran McWhirter from injury was a welcomed blessing. However, the 32-19 victory was soured considerably with the loss of Jake Milne with a broken leg and Josh Logan with a broken thumb.

First Grade led the competition for 18 weeks and at the completion of the season proper First Grade would finish 17 points clear of second placed Souths.

Injury and the unavailability of a number of players meant that the Major Semi-Final against Souths would be a very tight game. Jeeps got off to a strong start with good field position but the loss of 5/8 Ciaran McWhirter in the opening 10 minutes really hampered the attacking performance of the side. Some undisciplined play from a number of experienced Jeeps players, let Souths back into the game when Jeeps had a 20-13 lead and as a result Souths proved too good on the day taking the game 21-20. In what can only be described as the side’s worst performance of the year it was now sudden death.

The Preliminary Final against Logan was expected to be a hardly fought contest and while at times it lived up to the expectations of a Prelim Final, Jeeps proved way too strong taking the game 49-0. It was the most complete display of the year with both forwards and backs all playing to their potential. The tight work by the forwards in both defence and attack was simply outstanding and the finishing skills of the outside backs was just first rate.

The Grand Final was a very tight affair with GPS absorbing a great deal of pressure for the larger Souths Pack. Reggies went into the half time break leading 7-6. Unfortunately a ten minute period where Souths were able to score two tries in quick succession put a major dint in Grand Final glory and at the end of the day the boys simply ran out of time going down 16-12.

Brisbane Second Grade

Coaches: Damon Tuka, Mania Ieti, David Baldwin, Andrew Taylor

The 2013 season was much anticipated for 2nd grade as we looked to defend the premiership that was won in spectacular style in 2012. The coaching team had lost experienced backs coach Garry McCann, who was replaced with Colts coach Andrew Taylor.

The season started on a positive note with a strong away win at Easts, with the good form continuing on with a thrashing of Norths at Norths and another strong win against eventual premiers Wests at home.

The team suffered some season ending injuries to key forwards Richie Lee and Peter Shalcross, while backline general Dan Early badly damaged his ankle and it was during this period without these senior players that the wheels started to fall off as we headed into a tough block of games against eventual finalists Brothers, Sunnybank and early pacesetters Souths, losing all games. The 26 all draw to University, after we lead 23-3 at the half time break, was a demoralizing and crushing blow, sapping confidence from the team.

We found our winning ways again against Logan and Easts which continued during a block of games against teams that finished on the bottom half of the table, with a spectacular last minute try to Ben Laurie and a sideline conversion from Captain and John Eales imitator Brad Houlihan winning a fantastic game after the bell.

Moving into the final block of games against the premiership front runners the team lost several key forwards to Reserve Grade and we were ultimately unable win any of the remaining 3 games that would have likely seen us make the finals.

While we were unable to defend our premiership, the team showed plenty of spirit and courage, always playing to the their ability and putting in incredible efforts for their teammates.

2014 promises to be a huge year for 2nd grade with the return of several key players from injury.

Brisbane Third Grade

Coaches: Stuart Hendricks, Kim Jones, Alan Berriman (M)

Third grade got off to a bit of a shaky start with games being cancelled and then a first game loss to Easts but this was just the catalyst needed for the team to start on their winning way. Under the captaincy initially of Sam Heinke and then Brett Frostick, (along with a couple of ring ins along the way) the side began to set the pace by winning ten in a row and in hot pursuit of Uni who had the benefit of a couple of games in hand.

Capably guided by Stu and Kim, along with a great mix of old heads and you bodies, we met Uni in the penultimate game of the year to take the minor premiership and start on the road to the finals.

From this point we were never headed defeating Uni in the semi finals and then a fortnight later, again defeat the same team to take out the grand final.

It was shown that this group played as a team when the best and fairest votes were tallied at the end of the year with four players all finishing on the same number of points and a few others on seven and six.

We also had a couple of our overseas imports play with us during the year, the most notable of whom was Austin Welch (even though he was Walsh in the programs). This is a guy whose name we are likely to see in the American Eagles team sometime in the future.

To culminate the year we saw Stu and Kim take out the club award for Coaches of the year, an honour very well deserved.

A special mention also to Anthony Herbert and the committee for the work they have put in this year to guide the club to six teams being in premiership contention and also to Matt Turner our new General Manager who though a number of innovative ideas steered the club forward.

I look forward to season 2014 and another premiership club under the belt

What a great year for fourth grade. We began the year with a good mix of returning premiership players from 2012 and some new blood joining the ranks. A new team management line-up of Matt Moore, Kal Carthew and Sam Mohammad had an easy start to the pre-season winning the trial matches with an abundance of talent to choose from.

As the season kicked off, we finished the trials quite confident that we could defend the premiership successfully. An early season injury to Buff Thomson saw a defensive coordinator join the team management for some of 2013, a big thank you to the buffman.

With some fluctuations in the roster some weeks, we lost a few games. But we won the ones that mattered. A great run into the finals saw the cream rise and the execution become almost clinical (the last home game against University stands out...2 tries in 10 minutes with just 14 men)

Once again Fourth grade made it’s way to Ballymore to earn a final spot. A grinding win over Souths secured us a spot against the top of the ladder University. A nail biting to and fro game played out with the defending champions GPS taking out the game 23-20.

The captains this year were invaluable to the cohesion of the team. A big thank you to Alex Grace and Nathan Shaw for their contributions to the team this year, great leaders that both deserve higher grades.

To the forwards, a big thank you to each of you for your hard work and determination this year. They say the forwards are the foundation of a team, and you guys built a strong one... I look forward to seeing you in higher grades. Alex, Hunter, Trubby, Gussy, Greggors, Kiwi (the bull), Richie, Spurlo, Ben, Fris, Chonas, Kel, Beattie, Mayze, Shally, and Hasto.

It is said, the forwards win the game, the backs decide by how much and what a great bunch of backs to work with this year. We lost a few along the way, but the core group developed and we were able to retain that group into the finals. A big tip of the hat to Shawrie, Gerry, Drewey, Rob, Lew, Andy, Andy C, Rory, Willie and an honourable mention to Carlos, Spanish Dave and Joey.

Guys, top year, winning a Grande from third place is always satisfying. Especially with such a bunch of top blokes. Here's to three in a row for Geeps 4th Grade.

Fifth Grade Coach: Matt Bright (C&M) Rory Maguire(Asst)

The Fifth Grade Flashers, named after the team sponsor Flash Printing was raised this year initially to play in the Scotney Cup within the Queensland Suburban Rugby Union (QSRU). A significant number of players from the 2012 season returned and with a cadre of new talent were focused on the intent to win the 2013 Scotney Cup Grand Final, in which the team was runner up in 2012. However, surprisingly to us, Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) created a new Fifth Grade competition of which we were now a part and on which we focused our efforts for a premiership. A disjointed draw saw the team disconnected from the remainder of the club for the majority of the season but we were still keen to support higher grades when the draw allowed us.

As per previous years, the lowest grade of the senior club was made up of true clubmen who are no longer able to commit to the higher grades but still had a passion to run around the paddock on a Saturday afternoon when they could. Due to the nature of the playing group the team was never able to run on as listed on a Thursday night and every week saw a new combination of players. The team recruited four players from the community who had never played a game of rugby in their lives they were keen to learn, enthusiastic and developed to become important members of the Flashers. One of these players, was Mitchelton Councilor, Andrew Wines, who embraced the game after many years of playing Australian Rules Football and developed into a promising prop.

The captain, Rory Maguire, ably led the team. He displayed great leadership through inspiring teammates on the field and off. Rory also accepted the Assistant Coach role and showed his commitment to the team and club through his tireless efforts in this role. Thankyou must also go to Daniel Byrnes and Bill Heck who shared the manager role, your efforts were very much appreciated.

The back line revolved around Rory Maguire and Kieran Flynn (awarded Best Back 2013) who were consistent leading players throughout the season. Team structure started coming together mid season when Ben Sexton (awarded Best and Fairest 2013) moved from lock to the number 10 position, Blake Butler combined with Kieran Flynn in the centres. When Matt Fleming was able to play he brought a strong defensive game into the back line. Tom Gardner and Lewis Burrows came late to the team from fourth grade and brought valued skills to the back line. We all enjoyed the fast paced contributions from the wingers who rotated predominantly through Anton Blow, Ben Ramsey and Jack Baxter. Fraser Dunn was our resident full back until injury interrupted his season. Each player was not only able to excel in their positions they were also able to effectively integrate and function well with a new back line structure each week achieving some great performances. A mention needs to be made to clubmen, Pat Tancred and Tim Fuller who were great contributors to the back line when work and study commitments allowed.

The forward pack was consistently propped up by Adrian ‘Bear’ Restell, club newcomer Craig Horton and when not injured, Brendan ‘Buddy’ Coombes. Hookers came and went like ladies of the night with appearances from Will Champion, Tim Wiki, Tim Wrigley and Ronald Tinggee in the position. Brad Newlove (awarded Best Forward 2013) had a fantastic year at lock being consistent all year, while Chris Kossick and Bill Holt continued to grow into the position after a number of years away from the game. Loose forwards, Tom Sexton and Hamish Titzel were paramount at the breakdown, continuously slowing the opposition momentum. James Taylor and Josh McKinnon were outstanding in their tireless ability to get around the park. The forward pack impressively worked hard all year to set up the foundation for our elusive back line to attack.

Special mention goes to Chris Day and Richard McKinnon from the Golden Gallopers who regularly backed up for Fifth Grade and made valuable contributions to the team. It was also an honour to watch the father and son combination of Richard and Josh McKinnon play together on the same team. Thankyou to all players not individually mentioned in this report. Your contributions to the Fifth Grade Flashers are valued and greatly appreciated.

As we approached the last games of the minor rounds we were positioned third on the ladder but sustained some unfortunate injuries to key players that required a restructure to our team. This saw us progress into the finals series from fourth place with new combinations, but still a great deal of determination and team spirit to win.

The knock out semi final was played at Ballymore against first placed Souths. The Flashers were the only team to have beaten Souths all season and although our team had changed considerably since that first round win we went in as the underdogs. We started the game well putting first points on the board. We went into the break seven points down with the full time score being 44-22 to Souths. Well done to everyone who participated in the Fifth Grade Flashers this year. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2014.

Queensland Premier Colts

Coaches: Kelevi Tuicolo, Tom Sully, Matt Blinkhoff (M), Chris Eaves (M), Matthew Winkley (Strength & Conditioning)

The 2013 Colts season began in early February, with plenty of new faces showing in preseason after all but a few of last year’s team graduated into the Grades playing ranks. Tom Sully and Kelevi Tuicolo were back at the coaching helm, ably supported by Chris Eaves and Matt Blinkhoff.

The season started strongly, with the team winning four of its first six matches including wins over eventual finals teams including Souths and Brothers. However finding week-to-week consistency was the main undoing of the side, with three straight losses to finish off both the first and second rounds meaning the team was unable to make the finals despite the promising start to the season. Highlights of the season included being the only team to defeat Brothers in the regular season as well as home and away wins to a Souths team featuring plenty of players with Premier Grade experience. It was also pleasing to finish the season with one of the better defensive records in the competition. The lowlight of the season was undoubtably losing our captain Kristian Satui to a season- ending knee injury on the last play of training early on in the year. Kristian is a great player and leader and the boys were devastated to see him miss the remainder of the season.

It was great to see so many players develop and improve as the season progressed. Dylan Sikimeti made the offseason transition from schoolboy number 8 to the front row and improved every game he played, ultimately being rewarded with some time in Premier Grade in the back end of the season. Likewise, Ben Hicks, Josh Tregenza, Nick Richards and Cameron Knox made the step up from schoolboys rugby to be key players within the team and are undoubtably players of the future. Jared Gelsomino and Doug Rayment should also be congratulated for being invited to participate in the QRU under 20s train-on squad during the off-season. Well deserved for both players.

Thanks must go to the Colts 1 and 2 coaches, who put countless hours into the preparation and management of their respective teams. Also a big thank you must go to Colts Director Terry Donovan, who will leave big shoes to fill as he steps down from the role next season. Also a big thanks for the Team at AllSports Physiotherapy at Red Hill for their work this season, and to Anthony Herbert, Matt Turner and the whole committee for their fantastic efforts throughout the year.

Brisbane Colts One

Coaches: Lewis Torkington, Sam Weier, Fraser Coombes (M)

Overall Colts 1 had a very successful season ending in defeat to a very strong Souths side in the preliminary final. The team was forced to overcome many challenges throughout the season, especially a large injury toll in both premier colts and colts 1 which resulted in over 35 players representing Colts 1 at various stages of the season.

The season started well with good numbers at pre - season training, leading to comfortable victories in all three trials against University, Sunnybank and Brothers. Leading into round one confidence was very high amongst the group and it seemed as though we had plenty of depth this year throughout the colts ranks to see us through the season. The pre-season form carried over into the start of the regular season with strong victories over Gold Coast, Easts, Wests and Norths. The team scored close to 200 points in these first four games with less than 30 scored against us. Strong performances from forwards such as Tom Morrisey, Andrew Saunders and Matt Henwood paved the way for our backline to score plenty of points. Bryce Condon and TJ Norris who both moved down from Darwin this year to play for GPS found themselves with plenty of space out wide.

The lower standard of the opposition in the first four rounds meant that we were not quite sure yet where we were as a team as we were yet to face any strong opposition. This came over the next four games where Colts 1 suffered defeats at the hands of Souths, University and Sunnybank. During this period we did achieve a great win over Brothers at home with a huge performance from Will Thomasson at 5/8 proving the difference. It was during this game against Brothers that the team developed strong Unity that unfortunately seemed to go out the window until the latter part of the season. At the half way point in the season, Colts 1 sat 4th on the table having achieved 5 wins and three losses. We knew that if we were to feature at the back end of the year that we needed to lift our game. Unfortunately around this time, we suffered several injuries along with premier colts, which resulted in losing 3 or 4 quality players. This was compounded by the fact of players been away on Holidays and work commitments.

With Wests pulling out of the Colts 1 competition it left us with only 7 games to play before finals. We managed to beat the Gold Coast in round 10 with a thrown together side including playing our regular openside flanker at halfback. The next two games resulted in a heartbreaking loss to Easts followed by a Strong win over Norths. Without a doubt one of the highlights of the season was the round 15 win over Souths at Chipsywood where we defeated the table toppers 10 – 5. The boys showed a huge amount of character and put their bodies on the line, especially Harry Marshall who did not stop for 70 minutes.

Losses to Brothers and Uni left us sitting in 5th position with one round to play. We needed to beat Sunnybank and for Brothers to lose to Uni. Thankfully both of these things happened and we made it through to the minor Semi- final. We took it to Sunnybank again a week later and were able to get past them 21- 14 which resulted in another date with Souths on Ballymore1 the next Saturday in the preliminary final. Unfortunately Souths were too good on the day and we let them out to a 26 – 0 lead. The boys showed a huge amount of character to get the game back to 26 – 19 before Souths scored a late try to close out the game. This was a great experience for the boys to play at Ballymore and they did themselves, their coaches and the club very proud. Special mention must go to Liam Ford for his spectacular try in the 2nd half.

Considering the amount of injuries and other factors, it was a huge effort for these boys to get as far as they did and they should be as proud of themselves as we as coaches are of them. A big thank you to Sam Weier and James Sully for your efforts during the year, I enjoyed coaching with you both immensely. We would also like to thank the rest of the Colts coaching and support staff for all of your work during the year. Thank you to Matt Turner, Anthony Herbert and the Committee for your tireless efforts and support, especially Brogan Melit who helped me out many times during the season.

A final thank you and farewell to Terry Donovan who is finishing up his role as Colts director this year after 11 years with the GPS Colts. You are well respected by all of the players and Coaches and have left a positive and lasting impression on the Club. Don’t be a stranger next year Tez! With a large amount of Colts returning we are looking forward to 2014 already!

Brisbane Colts Two

Coaches: Luke Arnold, Alex Heinke, Brandon Ciocca(M)

2013 signalled new beginnings and high aspirations from players and coaches alike within the Colts II program. Taking over the reins of Colts II was inherently challenging considering the outstanding record of previous coaches, Tom Gardiner and Liam Wiltshire. Witnessing the talent pool and energetic pre-season, Luke Arnold and myself were eager to elevate the team to new heights. It was unfortunate however, that we were not able to repeat the efforts of previous years.

With several key injuries within higher teams and an absurd QRU scheduling conflict between Colts I and ourselves saw us on the back foot early. With a promising start to the regular season the boys came up agonisingly short in successive games that damaged moral and commitment within the team. Against an aggressive Sunnybank outfit we fought back from a three try deficit to become level minutes before full time. Pressing Sunnybank’s try line we handed possession over with a wayward lineout throw only to see a Sunnybank winger go the length of the field to score.

The next weekend to the credit of the boys we put on arguably our best performance of the year only to be undone in a similar fashion by competition leader’s University. These two losses shattered the confidence of our team and from them until the conclusion of the season we struggled with commitment and passion for the green and blue. With this being said there are many positives to be taken from this season.

This season the boys and coaching staff have certainly improved as footballers and matured as men. Returning Colts II players were unfortunate not to play higher within the Colts program but consistently turned in excellent performances when the scoreboard was against us. Chris Jenkins and Ryan Purcell played to high standards this season and lead the forwards against packs much larger than our own. Captain Ben Stubbings became an unbeatable fullback often being called upon to cut down heavy forwards and slick backs that looked certain to score. Next season we have the pleasure to welcome back the newcomers who have developed their trade this season.

The likes of Kieran Moon, Dom Hanrahan, Joe Coughlan and Nick Laracy will be forces next season considering their outstanding performances both on and off the paddock this year. Connor O’Shea was certainly the pick of the rookies with standout performances in both Colts I and Colts II. He should be commended on the manner he approached this season that saw him being constantly dragged between two teams and performing highly regardless. Despite the results, all players involved with Colts II this season were a pleasure to coach and made Tuesday and Thursday nights a highly enjoyable and productive time.

Praise must be given to the entire Colts management team especially to Brogan Melit, Matt Turner and Terry Donovan. Three great clubmen, they made Luke Arnold and myself welcome into the new and challenging coaching environment being both supportive and patient at times. A thank you must also be given to Brandon Ciocca who commenced the Colts II managerial role with the highest intentions but unfortunately for the team gained dream employment opportunities that ultimately took precedence.

2013 –another year down, another year closer to retirement (again).

2013 was a season interrupted by rain in the first part of the year, including out Great Western Rumble carnival. We again started the year at Albany Creek and enjoyed the hospitality and refereeing excellence of Mick and the guys – thanks again for putting on a great night.

We played our way around South East Queensland including a number of carnivals. Home and away games and very importantly, bus trips. We had bus trips to the Sunshine Coast, Wynnum, Redcliffe and the Gold Coast this year. Thanks very much to John Mann for driving the bus and even pulling the boots on for a couple of games. While the rugby is main event here, the sing a long on the way back is also a highlight – led by Rug who knows all the words to every song and likes both kinds of music – country and western.

The season finished off with the XXXX carnival at Ballymore including a game on the Number 1 field which was a real highlight – this got a few stories flowing about the “old days” – and yes the older we get the better we were.

We had some new members this year – special mention to Stuart Kull who not only played but bought down 3 or 4 other guys as well including Norm (The Fridge) and his mate Fili (The Freezer)….very welcome additions. Also thanks to Duncan Murdoch who introduced a number of Dads from U11 Green – look forward to seeing you next year boys.

Socially, our “Ladies Day” tent down at Yoku was also a highlight and a great way for the wives and girlfriends to get to know each other.

Many thanks to Donna for helping us out and also to Matt Turner – we really appreciate the support provided by the senior club.

A special mention to our sponsors. Thanks to Stewart Bensley from Hotel LA for providing our jerseys and allowing us to sell tickets in a meat tray on Reds game days. Also thank to Billy from Billy’s Meats at Ashgrove for doing us fantastic deals on our game day BBQ and meat trays to sell throughout the year. Special thanks also to Geoff Lavin from Bank of Queensland The Gap – if you are looking for a loan Geoff is the guy to see.

Once you finish grade footy your career in NOT over, there are plenty more years left. We play every second Friday night during the season. You need to be 35 or over to play, there are modified rules but it is still rugby. We love the rugby and we love the social side of it as well. GPS – where can play rugby from 6 years old until you are 60 years old (or even older)....gotta love it.

Treasurer’s Report

It is with great pleasure that I present the Treasurer’s Report for GPS Old Boys Rugby Union Club, financial year ending 30 September 2013.

Before highlighting the results for the year, I take this opportunity to thank the members of the past committee and in particular Treasurer Brian Sully. The Club was in a very sound financial position at the beginning of the year and playing season and that greatly assisted the work of the current committee.

Total income for the financial year exceeded $1.1m producing a profit of $276k. The following points should be noted, • Income includes a capital grant from the Queensland Government of 180k for the new pavilion. • Canteen and hospitality takings have been included in the accounts this year. • Due to the timing of international matches in 2012-13, the proceeds of two GPS Rugby lunches are included.

As at 30 September 2013, cash at bank was 196k and total equity stood at just under 950k largely represented by leasehold improvements. During the year a major focus was given to increasing members, merchandising of club apparel as well as events and hospitality. All of these contributed strongly to the operating results of the club.

Early in 2013, Matt Turner commenced as General Manager of the Club and I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Matt for his efforts and his support for me personally. Matt’s contribution has been a major factor in our pleasing results. In addition I particularly thank fellow committee member Peter Rogers. Peter implemented a new accounting system for the Club this year and spent many hours posting entries and producing reports. Our ability to make decisions with confidence can be largely attributed to Peter and his work and on behalf of the committee I convey my heartfelt thanks. I also thank outgoing General Manager Rod Torkington for his great support during a time of transition for us all.

It has been a pleasure working with the committee members this year. All have focussed on furthering the aims of the club both on and off the field. I particularly acknowledge President Anthony Herbert for his tireless efforts.

Finally, this Club does not exist without the commitment of players, coaches, members and supporters. Everyone has contributed significantly during the season and I thank you all for what has been a highly successful year.

Peter Selwood Hon Treasurer.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2013

1 Statement of Significant Accounting Policies

The financial statements cover GPS Old Boys Rugby Union Club Inc. as an individual entity.

Basis of Preparation

The financial statements are general purpose financial statements that have been prepared in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards (including Australian Accounting Interpretations). The association is a not-for-profit entity for financial reporting purposes under Australian Accounting Standards.

Australian Accounting Standards set out accounting policies that the AASB has concluded would result in financial statements containing relevant and reliable information about transactions, events and conditions. Compliance with Australian Accounting Standards ensures that the financial statements and notes also comply with International Financial Reporting Standards as issued by the IASB. Material accounting policies adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are presented below and have been consistently applied unless stated otherwise.

The financial statements, except for the cash flow information, have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historical costs, modified, where applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current assets, financial assets and financial liabilities. The amounts presented in the financial statements have been rounded to the nearest dollar.

The financial statements were authorised for issue on by the members of the association.

Accounting Policies

Inventories

Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. The cost of manufactured products includes direct materials, direct labour and an appropriate portion of variable and fixed overheads. Overheads are applied on the basis of normal operating capacity. Costs are assigned on the basis of weighted average costs.

Property, Plant and Equipment

Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value as indicated less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses.

Page 5 GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2013

Plant and equipment

Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis and are therefore carried at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses.

In the event the carrying value of plant and equipment is greater than the estimated recoverable amount, the carrying value is written down immediately to the estimated recoverable amount. A formal assessment of recoverable amount is made when impairment indicators are present.

The cost of fixed assets constructed within the association includes the cost of materials, direct labour, borrowing costs and an appropriate proportion of fixed and variable overheads.

Subsequent costs are included in the asset's carrying amount or recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate, only when it is probable that future economic benefits associated with the item will flow to the association and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. All other repairs and maintenance are charged to the statement of comprehensive income during the financial period in which they are incurred.

Depreciation

The depreciation method and useful life used for items of property, plant and equipment (excluding freehold land) reflects the pattern in which their future economic benefits are expected to be consumed by the association. Depreciation commences from the time the asset is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements. The depreciation method and useful life of assets is reviewed annually to ensure they are still appropriate.

The assets' residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at the end of each reporting period.

An asset's carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset's carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount.

Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains or losses are recognised in profit or loss. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation surplus relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.

Financial Instruments

Initial Recognition and Measurement

Financial assets and financial liabilities are recognised when the entity becomes a party to the contractual provisions to the instrument. For financial assets, this is equivalent to the date that the association commits itself to either purchase or sell the asset (i.e. trade date accounting adopted).

Financial instruments are initially measured at fair value plus transactions costs except where the instrument is classified 'at fair value through profit or loss', in which case transaction costs are expensed to profit or loss immediately.

Impairment of Non-Financial Assets

At the end of each reporting period the association determines whether there is an evidence of an impairment indicator for non-financial assets.

Where this indicator exists and regardless for goodwill, indefinite life intangible assets and intangible assets not yet available for use, the recoverable amount of the assets is estimated.

Where assets do not operate independently of other assets, the recoverable amount of the relevant cash-generating unit (CGU) is estimated.

The recoverable amount of an asset or CGU is the higher of the fair value less costs of disposal and the value in use. Value in use is the present value of the future cash flows expected to be derived from an asset or cash-generating unit.

Where the recoverable amount is less than the carrying amount, an impairment loss is recognised in profit or loss.

Reversal indicators are considered in subsequent periods for all assets which have suffered an impairment loss, except for goodwill.

Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the association estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.

Impairment testing is performed annually for goodwill and intangible assets with indefinite lives.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2013

Accounts Receivable and Other Receivables

Accounts receivable are recognised initially at the transaction price (i.e. cost) and are subsequently measured at cost less provision for impairment. Receivables expected to be collected within 12 months of the end of the reporting period are classified as current assets. All other receivables are classified as non-current assets.

At the end of each reporting period, the carrying amount of accounts receivable and other receivables are reviewed to determine whether there is any objective evidence that the amounts are not recoverable. If so, an impairment loss is recognised immediately in statement of comprehensive income.

Employee Benefits

Provision is made for the association's liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees at the end of the reporting period. Employee benefits that are expected to be settled within one year have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.

Employee benefits payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made for those benefits. In determining the liability, consideration is given to employee wage increases and the probability that the employee may not satisfy vesting requirements. Those cash outflows are discounted using market yields on national government bonds with terms to maturity that match the expected timing of cash flows.

Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be reliably measured.

Cash and Cash Equivalents

C ash and cash equivalents comprises cash on hand, demand deposits and short-term investments which are readily convertible to known amounts of cash and which are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value. Bank overdrafts also form part of cash equivalents for the purpose of the statement of cash flows and are presented within current liabilities on the statement of financial position.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2013

Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is recognised when the amount of the revenue can be measured reliably, it is probable that economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the entity and specific criteria relating to the type of revenue as noted below, has been satisfied.

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable and is presented net of returns, discounts and rebates.

Sale of goods

Revenue is recognised on transfer of goods to the customer as this is deemed to be the point in time when risks and rewards are transferred and there is no longer any ownership or effective control over the goods.

Interest revenue

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method.

Subscriptions

Revenue from the provision of membership subscriptions is recognised on a straight line basis over the financial year.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

Accounts Payable and Other Payables

Accounts payable and other payables represent the liabilities at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the association that remain unpaid.

Accounts payable are recognised at their transaction price. Accounts payable are obligations on the basis of normal credit terms.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Re venues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST), except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of GST. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included as part of receivables or payables in the statement of financial position.

Comparative Figures

When required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for the current financial year.
