Middle Ages 500-1000 1 3 The Dark Age Church Period of Barbarian Invasions AD 500—1000 Introduction With the endorsement of the Emperor and obligatory church membership for all Roman citizens across the empire, Roman Christianity continued to change the nature of the Church, in stead of visa versa. The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West.

  • Chinese Catholic Nuns and the Organization of Religious Life in Contemporary China
religions Article Chinese Catholic Nuns and the Organization of Religious Life in Contemporary China Michel Chambon Anthropology Department, Hanover College, Hanover, IN 47243, USA; [email protected] Received: 25 June 2019; Accepted: 19 July 2019; Published: 23 July 2019 Abstract: This article explores the evolution of female religious life within the Catholic Church in China today. Through ethnographic observation, it establishes a spectrum of practices between two main traditions, namely the antique beatas and the modern missionary congregations. The article argues that Chinese nuns create forms of religious life that are quite distinct from more universal Catholic standards: their congregations are always diocesan and involved in multiple forms of apostolate. Despite the little attention they receive, Chinese nuns demonstrate how Chinese Catholics are creative in their appropriation of Christian traditions and their response to social and economic changes. Keywords: christianity in China; catholicism; religious life; gender studies Surveys from 2015 suggest that in the People’s Republic of China, there are 3170 Catholic religious women who belong to 87 registered religious congregations, while 1400 women belong to 37 unregistered ones.1 Thus, there are approximately 4570 Catholics nuns in China, for a general Catholic population that fluctuates between eight to ten million. However, little is known about these women and their forms of religious life, the challenges of their lifestyle, and their current difficulties. Who are those women? How does their religious life manifest and evolve within a rapidly changing Chinese society? What do they tell us about the Catholic Church in China? This paper explores the various forms of religious life in Catholic China to understand how Chinese women appropriate and translate Catholic religious ideals.

337 10.2018 Gathering of Discalced Carmelite nuns in the Teresianum ore than thirty Discalced Carmelite nuns in charge of formation and superiors of their communities met between 7th-13th September last in the Teresianum Min Rome. During the encounter, the nuns who took part at- tended two courses on the subject of the formation of modern generations of Carmelites. The course on the Teresian perspec- tive was given by Fr. Giuseppe Pozzobon and the one from the perspective of St. John of the Cross by Fr. Iain Matthew, which gave way to an exchange of opinions and approaches to the formation of candidates in the feminine Teresian Carmel. The gathering, organised by the Federation ‘Mater Carmeli’ of Italy, was supported by the presence of the association ‘Regina Pacis’, led by their President. The sisters were also able to inform themselves about some of the services which the faculty offers communities, such as the online diploma course in Theology, as well as the library, which the nuns visited accompanied by Fr. Ciro. Thus they will be able to benefit from the resources available on the internet. • Jordan Seminary
The Many Menominee Manifestations (Try saying that three times fast!) The USA Province of the Society of the Divine Savior has a lengthy history of buying “unique” properties that most people would NEVER think about for religious usage. We turned them into religious places anyway! Two provincials in particular – Fr. Bede Friedrich (1931-1936 / 1939-1947) and Fr. Paul Schuster (1953-1959) – had a knack for finding odd establishments and envisioning religious uses for them. (Many of those stories are already familiar and have been written about in some of our past Archives’ history pages: a “Buffalo Farm” became a seminary; a mud-bath resort was turned into a college; a dairy was transformed into a parish; a resort hotel – turned “National Swine Palace” – became our Novitiate; and an army barracks was used for a boys’ high school.) Another such property that underwent numerous transformations was in Menominee, Michigan. In this small city on the border of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the state of Wisconsin, a set of buildings near the county’s tiny airport saw a variety of uses over the years – not just before the Salvatorians purchased it, but even while we owned it! Menominee County School of Agriculture – 1907-1929 Built in 1907, this county school was authorized by the state legislature to develop scientific agricultural methods for the farmers in the Upper Peninsula. Until 1925, when the economic situation across the country began to shift, the school was operated under county supervision and with county funds. The state took over the operations for the next four years, but the failing economy that would lead to the Great Depression forced even the state to close the school in 1929.

Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort’s Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary Choose a day for the Consecration To begin, choose the date of a Marian Feast on which to make the consecration. Whichever Feast you choose will determine the date to begin a 33-day period of spiritual preparation, i.e., you follow spiritual exercises for 33 days, and the next day will be the Marian Feast on which you consecrate yourself. Below is a list of Marian Feasts which are the same on both the traditional and Novus Ordo calendars: Feast / Start of Marian Feast You've Chosen Consecration 33-day Plan Day Apparition of the Immaculate 9 Jan 11 Feb Virgin Mary at Lourdes 20 Feb 1 The Annunciation 25 Mar 13 Jun Our Lady of Mt. The Life of Saint Paul of the Cross Founder of the Congregation of the Cross and Passion 1694-1775 Volume 1 – 1694-1741 Father Louis Therese of Jesus Agonizing, C.P. 1873 Fr. Simon Woods, C.P. (Translated from the third French Edition) 1959 (INDEX TO VOLUME ONE ON FINAL PAGES) DEDICATION to HIS EMINENCE FERDINAND CARDINAL DONNET Archbishop of Bordeaux Your Eminence, The Life of Saint Paul of the Cross, which it is my privilege to dedicate to you, may rightfully be called your very own. Without your Eminence the work may not have been completed, and I may never have realized the idea that I had in mind for a very long time. It is then the humble fruit of a tree planted by your own hands in the vineyard confided to your care by the Heavenly Father. It was when your Eminence was in Rome for the Beatification of our holy Founder that you obtained from His Holiness Pope Pius IX the sons of Saint Paul of the Cross for your Archdiocese… And, if this little family was welcome and took its humble beginnings in the fruitful soil of France under your protection and guidance, is it not due to your paternal interest and initiative? Soon, it is true, a learned and zealous clergy imitated your zeal; but in those days of supreme struggle, of unceasing conflict against the rights of the Church, your Eminence realized that it is necessary that zeal be united with learning, especially when the war “against the Lord and his Christ” becomes so universal.
