Through the generosity of Mr# Joseph Burstyn, who brought to the United State3 this film that is to open to the public at the World Theatre on December If, this pri­ vate preview is being held for the benefit of the Museum's varied programs that contribute to cultural life particularly in New York. This fantasy-comedy is a delightful kind of mass wish-fulfilment dream of great spirit and humor. Technically it makes use of the many rarely used, intriguing tricks and illusions of which only the film is capable. Miracle in Milan was awarded the Grand Prix of the 1951 Cannes Film Festival and the International Critics' Award. Of the film Dudley Nichols, leading American screen writer, says: "de Sica has done the most exciting job of the decade in Miracle in Milan* It is a work of power, love and laughter - wonderfuli I think it makes him number one man in the film world." The Museum feels that it3 members will welcome this opportunity to see such a film and at the same time benefit the Museum's activities. Richard Griffith, Curator of the Museum's Film Library, says of the film: Out of the same materials from which he fashioned his tragic The Bicycle Thief, Vittorio de Sica has created a new film as altogether unlike its great predecessor as is conceivable, but equally worthy to stand among the achievements of the motion picture. Miracle in Milan is a fantastic comedy with undertones of satire. Its leitmotifs are goodness and kind­ ness and human brotherhood, I can think of no film like it except A Nous la Liberte, and if anything Ren€ Clair's master­ piece is flattered by the comparison. .

Scope and contents: The Roud Collection (9 Paige boxes, 2 Manuscript boxes and 3 Packages) consists primarily of book research, articles by RR and printed matter related to the New York Film Festival and prominent directors. Material on Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Henri Langlois is particularly extensive. Announced at the Cannes Film Festival by the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate global partnership program, the competition will be open for submissions through September 15, with the winners to be announced at a high-profile awards ceremony at the United Nations COP22 Climate Summit in Marrakesh, Morocco in November. The winning entries will receive cash prizes of $8,000, $5,000, and $2,000 for first, second and third place in each of two categories: an under one-minute Public Service Advertisement (PSA) or a Short Film up to five minutes. The competition offers filmmakers a chance to have their work reviewed by a jury chaired by Bernardo Bertolucci, and including other preeminent directors, producers, writers and political leaders. The author of "Miarriage, Italian Style," Zavattini will present an earlier work called "Love in the City," a five-part drama of the multiple faces of love. Produced by Zavattini and filmed in Rome with non-actors, it was made with the collaboration of Fellini and Antonioni. Zavattini himself co-directed one of the episodes of the picture, which will be discussed by the noted film scenarist and critic, who will also comment on the contemporary Italian film scene. In the days of neo-realism following World War II, the famous collaboration of Zavattini and director Vittorio De Sica resulted in such world-acclaimed films as "Shoe- ^Shine," "Bicycle Thief" and "Umberto D," The pictures made by this famous team expressed J t 'a deep compassion for humanity, and for the most part, were original scenarios filmed with non-professionals and based on real-life stories. Only "Miracle in Milan," starring the popular comic Toto, was adapted from Zavattini*s novel of the same title. Today Zavattini is working largely with young people. He and student film-makers are engaged in filming "happenings," or events of a social character, which are later shown free-of-charge in public places.

    FRENCH 3230 - History and Economics of French Cinema from Paris to Cannes Instructor: Lynn Ramey, French and Italian Location: Paris, Cannes, and Lyon, France Dates: May 6 – 31, 2019 Due to the participation in the Cannes Film Festival, this course could not be offered on campus. While there are a few simply cultural activities such as a game of pétanque (French lawn bowling) in Lyon, almost all outings are connected to learning about French media history and production. Paris, Cannes, and Lyon all have dedicated museums to film and the history of movie production. We will take day trips to Monaco and Nice where students will visit additional museums and film shooting locations. I have been teaching the history of French film for many years and have led versions of this Maymester twice (all versions have received excellent student evaluations). I study and publish on French media and speak French fluently. I'm delighted to have the opportunity to work 24/7 with students. The TA who will accompany me is not only a wonderfully enthusiastic teacher, he also has a film that has been submitted to the student section of the Cannes Festival. In 1895 the Lumière brothers screened the very first moving pictures in a café in Paris. Today the second largest film exporter after the US, France continues to play a central role in the international movie market. Once a year, in May, the world cinema community comes back to the birthplace of film and celebrates at the Cannes Film Festival. A ten-day extravaganza of film screenings, star sightings, and prize awarding, the Festival (founded in 1946) is considered the most prestigious film festival in the world.

    1 Revisiting the Past as a Means of Validation: Bridging the Myth of the Resistance and the Satire of the Economic Miracle in Two Comedies “Italian style” Giacomo Boitani, National University of Ireland, Galway Abstract: Many commedia all’italiana filmmakers have acknowledged the neorealist mode of production as a source of inspiration for their practice of pursuing social criticism in realistic and satirical comedies between 1958 and 1977. The detractors of the genre, however, have accused the commedia filmmakers of “diluting” the neorealist engagement to a simple description of the habits of Italians during the Economic Miracle, a description which threatened to encourage, through the casting of popular stars, the cynical attitude it sought to satirise. In this article, I shall discuss how two commedia all’italiana directors, namely Dino Risi and Ettore Scola, produced two significant commedie, respectively Una vita difficile (1961) and C’eravamo tanto amati (1974), which bridged the Resistance setting, associated with neorealism, and the Economic Miracle setting of most commedie all’italiana in order to reaffirm their neorealist roots, thus revisiting the past as a response to the critical underestimation from which their cinematic practice suffered. Many filmmakers of the comedy “Italian style” genre (commedia all’italiana) have acknowledged Italian neorealism as a source of inspiration for their practice of pursuing social criticism in realistic and satirical comedies produced in the years between 1958 and 1977. For instance, comedy “Italian style” star Alberto Sordi said that of those involved in the genre that “our project was to reinvent neorealism and to take it in a satirical direction” (Giacovelli, Un italiano 110),1 while director Marco Ferreri stated that “the commedia is neorealism revisited and modified in order to make people go to the movies” (Giacovelli, Commedia 21).
