The witness was placed with a group of 28 women. One of the soldiers told her that women, children, and old people were being taken to these homes because they were “not worth a bullet.” They were kept in this house for 27 days. Day and night, soldiers came to the house taking two to three women at a time. There were four to five guards at all times, all local Foca Serbs. The women knew the rapes would begin when “Mars Na Drinu” was played over the loudspeaker of the main mosque. (“Mars Na Drinu”, or “March on the Drina,” is reportedly a former “Chetnik” fighting song that was banned during the Tito years.) While “Mars Na Drinu” was playing, the women were ordered to strip and soldiers entered the homes, taking away the ones they wanted. The ages of women taken ranged from 12 to 60. The first time, soldiers had entered and grabbed an 18-year-old girl, asking her if she were a virgin. She said she was. It focuses on the presence of different significant figures from Serbian history and culture in the public sphere. It begins by presenting the pantheon of eminent figures in the history of Serbia. Next, the presidential election and its results are briefly described. Then, the text investigates the question what kind of eminent figures, by whom, and in which context were used in the last Serbian presidential campaign. The conclusion summarizes the specifics of the use of historical characters for political aims in that case. Keywords Serbia; national heroes; Kosovo myth; presidential election; culture; memory studies Introduction There are different ways of gaining broad support during elections. The Serbian presidential election in May 2017 was of key importance for the then ruling camp. The incumbent prime minister Aleksandar Vučić decided to run for president to further strengthen his position in the country. Through actions such as ordering early parliamentary elections or standing for the presidential office, Vučić consolidated his power in the country. However, despite constantly criticizing the government and the prime minister in particular for violating the principles of democracy, the opposition did not manage to unite and present a single contender capable of standing against the powerful leader of the ruling party. Instead of focusing on facts, during the campaign, the candidates frequently reached for tools involving symbolic messages intended to appeal to a broader spectrum of voters, drawn from national culture or history.

It is a wholly original and independent contribution. 1 Abstract This dissertation makes an original contribution to knowledge of how irregular military actors operate in modern mass atrocity crises, providing an evidence- based multi-perspective analysis of the irregular military dynamics that accom- panied the violent collapse of Yugoslavia (1991-1995). While it is broadly accep- ted that paramilitary or irregular units have been involved in practically every case of genocide in the modern world, detailed analysis of these dynamics is rare. A consequence of paramilitary participation in atrocity crises –which can be seen in academic literature, policy-making, and in popular understanding– has been to mask the continued dominance of the state in a number of violent crises where, instead of a vertically organised hierarchical structure of violence, irregular actors have comprised all or part of the military force. Here, analysis of structures of command and control, and of domestic and international net- works, presents the webs of support that enable and encourage irregular military dynamics.

As a corpus-based study (with the total of 35 films divided into seven periods running from 1945 to 2010), it examines in detail the representational strategies employed in depicting the filmic Roma, and aims to specify a developmental trajectory that these strategies take. To this end, a two-step analytical procedure is used: (1) Information Structure Analysis, the analytical framework developed by the present author for the purposes of studying narrative representations, makes use of the diegetic domain categories (Topic/Focus; Active/Passive/Perceiver) as well as the meta-diegetic domain categories (Frame Setter) in order to identify the narrative signals deployed in the construction of minority representations. (2) Narrative-Semiotic Analysis is concerned with the specifics of the representational content. It takes as input the findings of the Information Structure Analysis and investigates more closely the narrative roles and plot units that the Roma are assigned in the film narratives. The representational strategies identified in the project fall into three types: Roma as interactants, indices of socio‐psychological patterns, and meta‐textual devices.

    Chapter 8 THE INVENTION OF YUGOSLAV IDENTITY S erbian and South Slav Historiographies on World War I, 1918–2018 Stanislav Sretenovic´ Y•Z World War I played a key role in the history of Serbs, Croats, and Slo- venes. One of its consequences was the creation of the common South Slav state, which existed fi rst as a monarchy (1918–41) and then as a republic (1945–91). Proclaimed on 1 December 1918 and conceived as a liberal, democratic, and parliamentary political system, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes changed its character and name in 1929 when King Alexander I Karadjordjevic´ proclaimed a dictatorship and re- named the country the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The cornerstone of the new country was the Kingdom of Serbia, which had emerged victorious from the Great War, to which the territories of the Kingdom of Monte- negro and the ancient territories of Austria-Hungary were added. The new state was heterogeneous: it included territories populated by Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, all with common and yet also different cultures, religions, and traditions, as well as diverse experiences of the Great War. This heterogeneity could, in times of domestic political crisis or foreign interference, be a factor of weakness for the new country. The principal problem in the internal politics of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was the lack of national cohesion.
