It's finally hot now and we have been doing easier dinners. We are in search for the rest of the year, so please let me know when you want to volunteer to do a dinner. Don't be shy we need everyone’s help. So come to me so I can put you on the calendar. Last year we had great help, so I hope we can do it again this year. Thank you to all the volunteers who help in all ways. We had a great year so far.

In June we had Erica and her hubby Jamie do chicken Shish Kabobs. They sold out, great job as always. Their helpers were Rica, Leah and some of Erica's family. Thanks to all.

July we planned on a cook out of hot dogs and hamburgers, but it rained too bad to cook out. We had a great turn out anyway. We also had assorted salads and lots of side's. Our help was Billy, Mary Morin, Patty Anderson, Jackie Keeney and Nicki. And desserts were donated by Dawn Weaverling, Linda Kennison and Doris Heubeck. All great helpers and fun times.

For 4th of July we had a great turn out and a lot of help with getting our food out. Russ and Gail Twilley, Jackie Keeney and Judy Davidson, were all in the kitchen working hard. We had several outside dishes brought in to add to our food. And lots of desserts. It was a great day to celebrate with all our friends. And congratulation's to all the parade party, and the awesome float they all help build, great job everyone.

In August, we will be winging the dinner, probably cold cuts and fixings. Sept and there on out I will be needing volunteers to step up. We have not had a meeting this past month, because everyone went to the Convention in Ocean City, so nothing new to report. I hope everyone has a happy and safe summer. “Thank You” for your membership in American Legion Auxiliary. GOD BLESS AMERICA. August 5th September 2nd

American Legion Post 175 – Did You Know? This is a new section for “Questions and Answers” regarding selective matters of importance to American Legion Post 175 Membership, Activities and Functions. Submit your questions via email to Editor: [email protected].

Question: “Why did IKEA recently recall millions of furniture dressers and make National News?”

Answer: IKEA is recalling millions of dressers that can tip over and are being blamed for the deaths of three children. The IKEA dressers have been known to fall over if dresser is not fastened to the wall. This issue was already linked to death of two toddlers that sparked IKEA to launch a repair program in 2015.

Sad, but true, a child dies every two weeks and a child is injured every 24 minutes in the U.S. from furniture or TVs tipping over, according to Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) data. To help prevent injuries and deaths, CPSC and IKEA urge consumers to securely anchor furniture and TVs to prevent these tragedies and make their home a safer place. Parents and Grandparents, please take note!

Question: “Recently we attended American Legion’s Ceremony and witnessed the proper disposal of a worn American Flag. I was told a “Twilight Tattoo Ceremony” is a must see. What is a Tattoo Ceremony”?

Answer: This is one of the oldest ceremonies in and held at historic Fort McHenry. The history of Twilight Tattoo began more than 300 years ago as British troops were summoned from the warmth and hospitality of local pubs by a bugle and drum call to return to the barracks. The familiar tune told tavern owners “time to turn off the taps.” The troops knew the call to mean “taps off,” and minutes later they were back in their tents. The modern-day call is known as “Tattoo” and during basic training the call signals the time to quiet down and hit the bunks.

For the U.S. Army, the call serves as a tribute dedicated to the vitality of our nation and to the sacrifices of those who forged America into the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is for our forefathers and fellow Americans that Army proudly presents “Twilight Tattoo.” As Twilight Tattoo grew in popularity, the Army adapted the show, its location and the time of year it was performed to fit the growing needs of the American people. Settling on performances in the summer months has allowed for thousands of audience members to experience the ceremony and pageantry of the . Question: “I saw that the Wednesday Steak Night scheduled for September 21st now requires $13.00 advanced pre-payment at Legion Bar. What’s going on?”

Answer: Unfortunately, 10 persons who signed up for Steak Night were “No Shows”. We only purchase and cook enough steaks for persons signed up for evening’s event. In the past with small number of “No Shows” we were able to sell several steaks at the Bar. However, with such a large number of “No Shows” we can no longer afford to continue funding this practice. So a simple solution was for everyone to pre-pay the $13.00. Remember, there are no refunds for “no shows” unless we can re-sell steak on evening of event.

Question: “What are the posted BAR and BAR DELI hours?

Answer: Seems that different Bar and Bar Deli hours were posted in Newsletter and on signs around the Legion. To bring this matter to a close, Michele Jordan, Legion Bar Manager has posted BAR & DELI HOURS as follows:

BAR HOURS - Monday 12-11 PM, Tuesday through Thursday 11AM – 12PM, Friday 11AM – 2AM, Saturday 12 – 2AM and Sunday 12 – 10PM. BAR DELI HOURS - Open Daily Until 10 PM* (*) Unless a dinner or special meal is being served. Notice to all - Bar Deli closed during all Dinner Events and Special Meals.

A special thanks goes out to Nickie Alberts for all her help in preparing the spaghetti and meatballs for our June Friday dinner. Everybody loved it. On August 19th, we will back to our normal Shrimp & Cheese Steak dinner. Due to some “No Show” issues with the past Wednesday Steak Night, we have decided to put the sign-up list behind the bar requiring pre-payment.

The 2016 SAL Crab Feast is sold out. We set another record by selling 500 tickets in a little over two weeks. A waiting list is behind the bar, in case tickets due become available. Our main cause this year is supporting PTSD and Alzheimer’s. We could use some help in obtaining donations for our auctions. While you are patronizing your favorite business, ask if they would like to help the cause. I have donation letters and forms if you need them.

The drawing party to win a pair of Ravens 2016 season tickets is scheduled for Sunday, July 31st. This raffle is supporting PTSD.

In June, we honored Lieutenant Brian Mayers at the Local 1563 banquet hall. Brian brought a co-worker “Spice” along to show us her accelerant detection techniques. Dates to Remember: Sep 5 – Sep 10 – Defenders Day Sep 11 – Sep 17 – Constitution/Citizen Day Sep 22 – First Day of Autumn

As the sunsets on summer months and we prepare for the winter months ahead, we should all stop and take pause. In our History books and folklore we learned about our ancestors and the Autumn Harvest. In pure and simple words, our ancestors knew full well about “Planning for the Worse and Hoping for the Best”.

Winters in yesteryears were often harsh. Many folks lost the battle with age, injuries, disease and sickness. There were surely many regrets and oftentimes only prayers offered hope.

At the American Legion Family, each Family may embark on many new activities such as back-to-school schedules, new daily commutes to work or school while others may be traveling great distances to work, college or other events.

We should take a few minutes with our Family and discuss a few important topics such as individual responsibility, acceptable life styles, self-control, and our role with adult supervision even from afar.

Doesn’t mean you exercise complete control but you do set a few standards that will allow your Family to grow without your daily interference. Trust that you have established good morals and religious teachings through the past years with your Family. If not, remember, it’s never too late to do the right thing with your Family! And do remember that you cannot override in days the years of your lack of influence over moral structure in your Family. Take a few minutes of time, give pause, reflect and have the strength to move forward in life’s ever challenging tasks and endeavors. A few minutes of thought, a few plans and a little more effort could ward off many anxious moments of future anxiety.

I now close with this benediction: “Giver of life and Almighty LORD our God, today we come to you with deep gratitude in our hearts for all the gifts you give us each day. Summer time here is ending and we are moving to new places that you have called upon us to serve. We ask that you keep your hand of grace on our Family as they head out to their new horizons. Grant abundant blessings upon our Family. I ask that you give wisdom to each Family member to weather the storms of our time here and to learn from them; give us all a steel backbone to be persons of integrity; and especially to have the compassion that will enable us to be a leader or follower in ways that are redemptive and capable. Help us to accept this as a sacred trust in the days ahead. We pray for our Family members and their children. Many are all starting out on a new adventure in life. Give them all strength to weather the bumpy parts of their journey and a cheerful spirit to enjoy all of life with laughter, pure and clean. AMEN.”

American Legion Post 175 Members display patriotic duty to retire hundreds of worn USA Flags during annual Flag Day Ceremony.

What a perfect day for a Flag Day Ceremony! The glare of the sun was bright under blue skies. The heat from the sun brought sweat to brows of many, including spectators. A small and patriotic crowd had retired to chairs placed in the shade to witness the proper retirement of the USA Flags. Several active Military personnel in their dress uniforms were present. Soon the chairs were full while others stood in background for this solemn occasion.

Our men endured the sun, stood tall and proud at attention during the reading of the prepared ceremonial script. Military dress uniforms worn in younger days were now replaced by “colors” and bluejeans. Boots were now replaced by other footware. Age had descended on most participants but their patriotic duty was strongly present and all were accounted for. For many, time had moved on and now was time to retire the battered USA Flags.

Our Legion Members then marched in unison while some went left and others went right. Yes, their marching days had long passed but each man had the basic instincts - the Drill Instructor was very kind today. Our men were there to properly retire the aged USA Flags that had been deposited over many months for proper disposal at the Legion.

The flag handoff and salutes gave a sense of great respect and pride before the flags were placed in firepit for final disposal. Others stood at attention. The small crowd remained solemn as Taps were played. A fitting end.
