ONE PARTICULAR NEWSLETTER The Ophicial Publication of the Orange County Parrot Head Club Partying with a purpose for over 20 years! www.ocphc.org December 2016 Last Mango in Irvine for Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band Jimmy Buffett and The Coral Reefer Band played for the last time at The Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine on Saturday, October 22nd. The OCPHC was the national host for The Last Mango in Irvine Party. Word of the party went out on the club Facebook page and a pre-concert tailgate was planned near the event. Several club members joined the official Club RV to help prepare for the party. Much to our surprise, more than 10 additional RVs from all across the country joined us to get ready and gear up for the concert. Our old friend Jimmy Groovy showed up in costume and added to the pre-concert fun. Once inside the parking lot, Jerry Gontang played to the huge crowd In This Issue around the OCPHC event site. A.J.’s famous Cheeseburgers in Paradise were on the grill all were partying just like Bubba does in Pg 1: Last Mango in Irvine preparation for the concert. Once inside the venue, Jimmy and the CRB did not disappoint. The 26 song set included a tribute to Jimmy’s Pg 2: Andy’s Irvine Letter friend, Glenn Frey of The Eagles, who recently passed away. • Paying Attention to Public Readers of Canadian Literature
PAYING ATTENTION TO PUBLIC READERS OF CANADIAN LITERATURE: POPULAR GENRE SYSTEMS, PUBLICS, AND CANONS by KATHRYN GRAFTON BA, The University of British Columbia, 1992 MPhil, University of Stirling, 1994 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2010 © Kathryn Grafton, 2010 ABSTRACT Paying Attention to Public Readers of Canadian Literature examines contemporary moments when Canadian literature has been canonized in the context of popular reading programs. I investigate the canonical agency of public readers who participate in these programs: readers acting in a non-professional capacity who speak and write publicly about their reading experiences. I argue that contemporary popular canons are discursive spaces whose constitution depends upon public readers. My work resists the common critique that these reading programs and their canons produce a mass of readers who read the same work at the same time in the same way. To demonstrate that public readers are canon-makers, I offer a genre approach to contemporary canons that draws upon literary and new rhetorical genre theory. I contend in Chapter One that canons are discursive spaces comprised of public literary texts and public texts about literature, including those produced by readers. I study the intertextual dynamics of canons through Michael Warner’s theory of publics and Anne Freadman’s concept of “uptake.” Canons arise from genre systems that are constituted to respond to exigencies readily recognized by many readers, motivating some to participate. I argue that public readers’ agency lies in the contingent ways they select and interpret a literary work while taking up and instantiating a canonizing genre.

Portail de l'éducation de Historica Canada Canada's Game - The Modern Era Overview This lesson plan is based on viewing the Footprints videos for Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Father David Bauer, Bobby Hull,Wayne Gretzky, and The Forum. Throughout hockey's history, though they are not presented in the Footprints, francophone players like Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux, Raymond Bourque, Jacques Lemaire, and Patrick Roy also made a significant contribution to the sport. Parents still watch their children skate around cold arenas before the sun is up and backyard rinks remain national landmarks. But hockey is no longer just Canada's game. Now played in cities better known for their golf courses than their ice rinks, hockey is an international game. Hockey superstars and hallowed ice rinks became national icons as the game matured and Canadians negotiated their role in the modern era. Aims To increase student awareness of the development of the game of hockey in Canada; to increase student recognition of the contributions made by hockey players as innovators and their contributions to the game; to examine their accomplishments in their historical context; to explore how hockey has evolved into the modern game; to understand the role of memory and commemoration in our understanding of the past and present; and to critically investigate myth-making as a way of understanding the game’s relationship to national identity. Background Frozen fans huddled in the open air and helmet-less players battled for the puck in a -28 degree Celsius wind chill. The festive celebration was the second-ever outdoor National Hockey League game, held on 22 November 2003.

Eat at home and buy the books. Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Under the new arrangement, the annual purse doubled in size to $50,000, with $40,000 going to the winner and $2,500 going to each of four additional finalists.4 Beginning in 2008, $50,000 was given to the winner and $5,000 * Andrew Irvine holds the position of Professor and Head of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan. • Thank You & Campaign Results
THANK YOU & CAMPAIGN RESULTS HHTH.COM | #STAYTHEPUCKHOME ABOUT THE STAY THE PUCK HOME CAMPAIGN FROM HOCKEY HELPS THE HOMELESS & BARDOWN HOCKEY Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hockey Helps the Homeless (HHTH) was forced to put their pro- am tournament season on hold, which bring in much-needed dollars to homeless support agencies and shelters across Canada. However, just because the pandemic put the rest of the world on pause, the need for support and funding for homeless and at-risk Canadians did not stop. In fact, it is only growing. For homeless and at-risk Canadians, the realities of the novel coronavirus are much different. They are at a much higher risk of contracting infections, chronic illnesses or compromised immune systems, making them extremely vulnerable to the virus and many lack the access to the supplies and infrastructure needed to maintain their health. Shelters and front-line workers working through the pandemic are in desperate need of funds since COVID-19 has put a tight strain on their budget and resources. They face an increase in demand from their clients, and a decrease in charitable giving from sponsors and their donors. Even though we are currently unable to host tournaments, everyone at HHTH still wanted to find a way to help. In order to do so, we teamed up with Bardown Hockey to create an exclusive, limited edition clothing line called “Stay The Puck Home” to support Canada’s homeless. 100% of net proceeds from the sale of the $25 t-shirts and $50 hoodies went to our charity partners from coast-to-coast.
