As early relapses are unavoidable despite standard-of-care treatment, the cannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) alone or in combination have been suggested as a combined treatment strategy for glioblastomas. Bifurcated Snuff Tubes in the Pre-Columbian Caribbean
Journal of Caribbean Archaeology Copyright 2020 ISBN 1524-4776 Conduits to the supernatural: Bifurcated snuff tubes in the pre-Columbian Caribbean Joanna Ostapkowicz School of Archaeology University of Oxford Oxford, OX1 2PG, UK [email protected] UK museum collections hold an important and largely unexplored corpus of Caribbean pre-Columbian cultural heritage, including seminal pieces that can offer new insights into the development of complex rituals in the region. This paper re-establishes the cultural context and significance of a previously undocumented carving related to cohoba drug rituals: an ornate, composite snuff tube carved of cannel coal, recovered from the Lesser Antillean island of St Vincent before 1870, and donated to Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum in 1900. Both the material (which does not occur in the insular Caribbean) and the carving style suggest that the snuff tube was an import from Venezuela's Lower Orinoco region, where the Barrancoid style emerged in its classic form ca. ~100 BC - AD 500 (Los Barrancos complex). As such, it is the earliest example of drug paraphernalia often assumed to have been used only after ~AD 1000, and isolated to the chiefdom-level societies of the Greater Antilles. This paper contributes a brief review of the St Vincent snuff tube within the context of other stone and wood examples in public collections in efforts to explore their diagnostics, range and, ultimately, the ceremonies in which they were used. DOYLE2 2Section of Evolution and Ecology, University of California, Davis, California 95616 USA Anaxagorea is a critical genus for understanding morphological evolution in Annonaceae because it shares a variety of features with other Magnoliales that have been interpreted as primitive relative to other Annonaceae. We present a detailed discussion of morphological characters used in a combined morphological and molecular phylogenetic analysis of Anaxagorea, along with impli- cations of the analysis for character evolution in the genus. In spite of a high level of homoplasy in stamen and leaf venation characters, their removal results in loss of resolution in the trees obtained. The distributions of characters on trees con®rm assumptions that several distinctive similarities between Anaxagorea and other Magnoliales are primitive retentions (e.g., the presence of an adaxial plate of xylem in the midrib, nonpeltate stamen connectives, inner staminodes, and several leaf architectural characters). However, lateral extensions of the ``laminar'' stamens, though possibly ancestral in Anaxagorea, are convergent with those in other Magnoliales. A number of morphological synapomorphies have been identi®ed for a clade containing most Central American species and another comprising all Asian species (e.g., conical bud shape and reduced inner petals for the Central American clade, and adaxial cuticular striations and capitate stigma shape for the Asian clade). -

The CheIllistry of Peyote Al.kaloids! GOVIND J. KAPADIA AND M. B. E. FAYEZ Department of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products, College of Pharmacy, Howard University, Washington, D.C. 20001 The fact that several publications, reporting new constituents and biogenetic pathways of peyote, have appeared since the publication of our latest review article (I)-and surely more to come-and the organization of this Symposium all testify that interest in peyote is still far from extinguished. In the lapse of only the past 18 months, fifteen additional constituents of peyote have been reported, bringing the total number of identified constituents of this resourceful cactus to 56 at the time of writing this article. The earliest chemical studies with peyote were made by Lewin (2) in 1888 who isolated the first crystalline constituent, namely the tetrahydroisoqui- noline alkaloid anhalonine (XXXVIII; for structures, cf. table 1). With the realization that the latter compound possessed no hallucinatory effects, vigorous research was continued to discover the active principle. The studies of Heffter (3-8) towards the end of the century resulted in the discovery of three additional tetrahydroisoquinolines, pellotine (XXXV), anhalonidine (XXX), and lophophorine (XLI) and the identification of mescaline (XVII), a il-phene- thylamine, as the hallucinogenic principle of the drug. In 1899, another alkaloid, anhalamine (XXI), was isolated by Kauder (9). Ernst Spath must be ac- credited for the structure elucidation and the synthesis of all these alkaloids, publishing his results in a series of reports from 1919 and extending the scope of his investigations to include alkaloids from other Cactaceae up to 1939 (10-28).
