W. Goethe, les frères Grimm, Adam Mickiewicz, Claude Fauriel et d'autres, consacraient des débats et des écrits aux œuvres de la tradition populaire orale serbe, surtout à la poésie populaire épique et lyrique. A une époque pas si lointaine, Mickiewicz et Fauriel donnaient des séries de conférences sur les chants épiques populaires serbes au Collège de France et à la Sorbonne (Fauriel à la Sorbonne de 1831 à 1832, Mickiewicz au Collège de France de 1841 à 1842). Toute une série de phénomènes sociaux, politiques, culturels et historiques créaient un climat favorable à une réception fructueuse de la tradition orale du peuple serbe, à commencer par la Révolution française, puis les guerres napoléoniennes, l'intérêt préromantique pour la « poésie naturelle du peuple » et enfin la conception que Vuk avait de la littérature et de la culture nationales. 1 En ce qui concerne la réception de la poésie orale serbe en Europe, la longue et abondante tradition de traduction de la littérature populaire serbe commence par la Chanson sur la mort de l’illustre épouse d’Asan-Aga figurant dans le récit de voyage de l’abbé Alberto Fortis ( Viaggio in Dalmazia , Venise, 1774) . Ce long chant sur la noble épouse d’Asan-aga (Hasanaginica ) qui, comme on le sait, était censé illustrer les mœurs des Morlaques, fut publié en version originale et dans sa traduction italienne. Il connut un profond et vaste écho à l’époque préromantique. Il fut traduit pour la première fois en allemand en 1775 par Friedrich A.C. Werthes, d’après la traduction italienne du texte de Fortis. Célèbre est l’adaptation qu’en fit J. W. Goethe, probablement la même année, en se servant de la traduction allemande, mais en consultant aussi le texte original, surtout pour ce qui était de l’organisation rythmique des vers. Elle fut incluse dans le recueil Volkslieder de Herder en 1778 et 1779. A partir de là, cette subtile ballade fut traduite dans les autres langues. Le Voyage de Fortis connut bientôt une édition française (Voyage en Dalmatie , Berne, 1778). Et le chant Hasanaginica fut traduit de nombreuses fois : par Charles Nodier ( Smarra , 1821), 1 Ce qui, dans la littérature et la culture serbes, peut être appelé le romantisme serbe est le fruit de nombreux phénomènes politico-historiques et historico-culturels en Europe et dans les régions peuplées de Serbes à la charnière des XVIII e et XIX e siècles. La Révolution française avec ses idéaux de liberté, d’égalité et de fraternité entre les hommes et les peuples, les guerres napoléoniennes, les mouvements de libération nationale, les idées de libéralisme et de démocratie, la première et la seconde insurrections serbes, la création de l’état serbe sur les bases d’une révolution populaire paysanne, l’intérêt préromantique pour la « poésie naturelle du peuple » (Herder), l’esprit d’historicisme et de tradition nationale, le droit de chaque peuple à son existence et son développement spirituels nationaux, la conception de la langue et de la littérature comme expression de « l’esprit d’une nation » - tout cela créait un climat favorable à l’émergence du romantisme européen, et serbe également. (Dragiša Živkovi ć, Evropski okviri srpske književnosti III , ( La littérature serbe dans le cadre européen III), Beograd : Prosveta, 1982, pages 190-191) Prosper Mérimée ( La Guzla , 1827), G. Fulgence (un fragment dans Cent chants populaires des diverses nations du monde , 1830), par un traducteur anonyme dans la revue Magasin pittoresque (1840), puis par Xavier Marmier (dans la Revue contemporaine en 1853 et séparément en 1854), par Claude Fauriel. Il fut traduit en anglais par Walter Scott vers 1798 d’après la traduction de Goethe, en hongrois par Kazinczy Ferenc en 1789. 2 La deuxième vague d’intérêt de l’Europe romantique pour la littérature populaire serbe commence à partir du moment où, en 1814 et 1815, Vuk Stefanovi ć Karadži ć se met à publier les chants populaires serbes de façon systématique. Il s’écoule une cinquantaine d’années depuis la publication du premier recueil de chants (1814) jusqu’à sa mort, et pendant tout ce temps, Vuk ne cesse de réfléchir à la collecte et la publication des chants populaires. Il écrira un jour que la collecte des chants est « sa tâche la plus importante et la plus chère ». 3 D’une manière bien particulière, Vuk a présenté le peuple serbe comme un peuple « littéraire », et l’a introduit dans la littérature européenne, tout en sauvegardant son identité et en insistant toujours sur les concepts « populaire » et « serbe »4. Ce phénomène a été favorisé par les conditions de l’époque : Vuk est apparu au moment où le romantisme connaissait en Europe son plein épanouissement, prenant racine sur les diverses strates des courants littéraires antérieurs, des mouvements culturels et des époques culturelles, qui avaient conduit le romantisme à la symbiose qu’il représentait, et avaient permis son adoption en Allemagne, en Autriche, en Angleterre, en France et en Russie, dans chaque pays d’une manière qui lui était propre. 5 Dans les cercles littéraires allemands, le travail de collecte et de publication des chants populaires serbes fait par Vuk fut particulièrement bien accueilli.

The failures compelled the Ottoman state to change its socio- economic and political structure. As a result of this transition of the state structure, which brought about a so-called “redistribution of power” in the empire, new Ottoman elites emerged from 1683 until the 1750s. We have divided the above time span into three stages that will greatly help us com- prehend the Ottoman transition from sultanic authority to numerous autonomies of first Muslim, then non-Muslim elites of the Ottoman Empire. During the first period (1683–1699) we see the emergence of Muslim power players at the expense of sultanic authority. In the second stage (1699–1730) we observe the sultans’ unsuccessful attempts to revive their authority. In the third period (1730–1750) we witness the emergence of non-Muslim notables who gradually came into power with the help of both the sultans and external powers. At the end of this last stage, not only did the authority of Ottoman sultans decrease enormously, but a new era evolved where Muslim and non-Muslim leading figures both fought and co-operated with one another for a new distribution of wealth in the Ottoman Empire.

This chaotic situation was combined with the arbitrary and repressive conduct of local Ottoman feudal lords. Migrations, interethnic contacts and mixing of populations as well as an intensified Islamization process caused by a number of factors greatly complicated the situation. Albanian northward penetration along the Lim and into Pešter as well as the expan- sion of the Vasojevići tribe into the Upper Lim valley added to the complexity of the ethnic and demographic picture of the region. Perpetual rebellions against the Otto- man occupation eventually led to the liberation of the Serbian Orthodox population of these areas. ABSTRACT The main focus of this study is to examine the modernization of the Ottoman navy during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, exploring naval administration, education, and technology. Giving a summary of the transformation of shipbuilding technologies and bureaucratic institutions of the Ottoman naval forces between 1808 and 1861, it analyses the structure of the Ottoman navy, its level of development in comparison to previous periods of time, and the condition of the vessels making up the naval fleet from 1861 to 1876. It also intends to evaluate the character of existing administrative structures at the outset of Abdülaziz’s reign in 1861 and the nature of subsequent changes, including structural reorganization of the Imperial Naval Arsenal, the Ministry of Marine, and the Naval Academy, as well as advancements in military training and seafaring; all within the context of the impact of these changes on the military, political, and economic condition of the Empire during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz.

Jezik prikazanja upoređuje s crnogorskim primorskim i katunskim govorima te s jezikom starijih pisaca naših, u prvom redu vla- dike Danila. Autor je pažnju obratio na gra� ju���������� pravopis���� ak�- cenatske znake u jeziku prikazanja, konsonantske grupe, za- mjenu jata� padežni sistem� glasovne alternacije� Nenadićev pogled na jezik i pravopis, odnos jezika prikazanja prema dijalekatskoj osnovi njihovih pisaca i prepisivača� odnos toga jezika prema starijemu jezičkome nasljeđu – i hrvat- skome i crnogorskom� različite uticaje na jezik Ivana Antuna Nenadića� neke tipične sintaksičke osobine i sl. Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962).

    književnost PREGLED CRNOGORSKE USMENE KNJIŽEVNOSTI Aleksandar Radoman The paper gives an analysis of the Montenegrin oral literature. The author presents an overview of the first traces of oral liter - ary heritage in Montenegro, classifying it in terms of genre and analysing its individual segments. In addition to a number of issues related to genre, theme and motif, typological and other aspects of the Montenegrin oral literature, the author outlines the problem of a relationship between oral and written literature. Opisujući u svojoj Istoriji političke i vojne prilike s kraja VI vijeka, u vrijeme vizantijskoga cara Mavrikija, hroničar Teofilakt Simokata donosi i prve vijesti o slovenskoj muzičkoj i usmenoknjiževnoj kulturi. Simokata svjedoči kako su careve štitonoše u blizini Herakleje uhvatili trojicu uhoda, Slovena, koji kod sebe nijesu imali nikakva oružja, a u prtljagu su nosili samo „kitare“. Nešto pozniji arapski izvori potvrđuju Simokatine navode i iz njih je razvidno da su Sloveni već u X vijeku koristili gusle. Zanimljivo je i to da je slovenska riječ igrici sve do XII sto - ljeća označavala profesionalne pjevače na mađarskome jeziku.

Ma kako da se u jednom epu opjevaju stvari koje se tiču cjelokupne nacije, ipak narod kao cjelina ne pjeva, već to čini samo pojedinac. HEGEL | 7 PREDGOVOR Tradicionalistički pristup izučavanju usmene književnosti u potpu- nosti zanemaruje pitanje njezina autorstva. Takav pristup nerijet- ko je zastupljen i u naše doba, o čemu npr. svjedoči tretman te književnosti u čitankama i antologijama. Danas, kad je autorstvo i zakonom zaštićeno, krajnje je neprimjereno tvorevine usmene književnosti kojima je autorstvo poznato tretirati kao produkt ano- nimnih narodnih stvaralaca. To pitanje naročito je aktuelizovao renomirani proučavalac crnogorske usmene književnosti – Novak Kilibarda, u knjizi Usmena književnost Crne Gore (CID, Podgori- ca, 2009). Nasuprot brojnim imenima koja preplavljuju savremenu crnogors- ku književnu scenu i nerijetko, zahvaljujući propagandi i medijs- kim reklamama, pribiraju nezasluženu slavu, imena crnogorskih pjesnika–pjevača sa statusom klasika u našoj usmenoj književnosti ostaju nepoznata laičkoj javnosti. Prvi među tim klasicima, po ocjeni Novaka Kilibarde, jeste Starac Milija. Stav o njegovoj poeziji Novak Kilibarda sažeo je u pet tačaka: 1. Pet pjesama Starca Milije, koje ukupno imaju 3.284 stiha, znače umjetnički vrh poezije koja se razvila na prostorima koji danas pripadaju Crnoj Gori. 2. Grimovsko-herderovska škola utemeljila je shvatanje da je us- mena književnost izraz kolektivnoga duha datoga etnosa, a da su pjevači i pričaoci, od kojih su zapisani usmeni tekstovi, samo preno- sioci kolektivnoga duha.
