Whenever the topic veered towards their idea of luxury, I hardly got an answer like “an expensive watch” or “the latest designer handbag”, which, for most, would be a fairly good representation of what luxury is. Often, the answers I’d get would be “more time with friends and family” or “a holiday spent not doing much”. It would be safe to say, then, that the concept of luxury is changing. It has gone be- yond material goods and replaced by experiences, a positive state of mind, and contentment. While it is hard for us here at Solitaire to separate ourselves from material luxuries, we still attempted to approach it a little differ- ently – especially now that we are approaching a new year. In this issue, you’ll find stories like Valerie’s Choice (p. 20), where lawyer, art patron, and jewellery lover Valerie Cheah talks about buying jewellery on her own terms, without being lured by the marketing tactics of popular designer labels. In A New Attitude (p. 36), Jack Zybert, CEO of Italian jewellery brand ZYDO, shares interesting insights as to how people, espe- cially women, are buying jewellery. It is refreshing to know that today, most women are more ideologically and financially inde- pendent, taking this luxury experience into their own hands and fulfilling a desire independently of their partners. Meanwhile, A Passion for Innovation (p. 42) explores how gold, as a material, is being utilised by new designers. These talent- ed creatives approach the luxurious materials with a different Anton D. • Is Game Immersion Just Another Form of Selective Attention? an Empirical Investigation of Real World Dissociation in Computer Game Immersion
Is Game Immersion Just Another Form of Selective Attention? An Empirical Investigation of Real World Dissociation in Computer Game Immersion by Charlene Ianthe Jennett A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL UCL Interaction Centre, Department of Psychology Revised thesis submitted July 2010 DECLARATION I, Charlene Ianthe Jennett, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Although some of this research has been published with my supervisors Anna L. Cox and Paul Cairns as co-authors, the work reported is my own. 2 ABSTRACT When your daughter is playing video-games and you call her to dinner but she fails to respond, do you assume she heard you and ignored you? Everyday descriptions of game immersion suggest that the real world dissociation experienced by gamers could be an extreme form of selective attention. If this were the case, this would mean that your daughter really did not hear you call, due to the complexity of the game environment and a lack of available cognitive resources. This thesis describes a grounded theory that suggests that immersion is a result of self-motivated attention which is enhanced through feedback from the game. Five experimental studies are then described. The experimental studies show that the extent to which a player thinks they are doing well in the game significantly affects their level of immersion, as measured via the Immersive Experience Questionnaire; and has objective effects on their awareness of other things in the environment, namely recall of auditory distracters and reaction time to a visual distracter.

  • Tile-Based Method for Procedural Content Generation
Tile-based Method for Procedural Content Generation Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By David Maung Graduate Program in Computer Science and Engineering The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Roger Crawfis, Advisor; Srinivasan Parthasarathy; Kannan Srinivasan; Ken Supowit Copyright by David Maung 2016 Abstract Procedural content generation for video games (PCGG) is a growing field due to its benefits of reducing development costs and adding replayability. While there are many different approaches to PCGG, I developed a body of research around tile-based approaches. Tiles are versatile and can be used for materials, 2D game content, or 3D game content. They may be seamless such that a game player cannot perceive that game content was created with tiles. Tile-based approaches allow localized content and semantics while being able to generate infinite worlds. Using techniques such as aperiodic tiling and spatially varying tiling, we can guarantee these infinite worlds are rich playable experiences. My research into tile-based PCGG has led to results in four areas: 1) development of a tile-based framework for PCGG, 2) development of tile-based bandwidth limited noise, 3) development of a complete tile-based game, and 4) application of formal languages to generation and evaluation models in PCGG. ii Vita 2009................................................................B.S.
