Problem The Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) 2nd Engineering District of Tarlac Province has ap- proved the improvement and rehabilitation works of the 512m-long stretch of a concrete-paved provincial high- way in La Paz, Tarlac that was severely damaged with presence of cracks, potholes and dilapidated surfaces. The damaged road was designed to be rehabilitated by an overlay of hot-mix asphalt. The DPWH District Office has incorporated the use of asphalt reinforcement ma- terial to address common problems of HMA paved roads aimed to extend its designed life.

Solution In this, MacGrid ARV VG5, which was primarily designed to extend the life of the asphalt by minimizing the effects of fatigue, thermal, reflective and settlement crackings, was introduced and recommended by Maccaferri (Philippines), Inc. for the project. It is a geocomposite material made of a non-woven geotextile and a geogrid made of glass fiber strands. The geogrid material is ar- ranged in a square grid pattern with polymeric coating and pressure sensitive adhesive. Stress concentrations in the asphalt matrix are relieved and redistributed by the reinforcement, resulting to the delayed initiation of cracks, slower crack growth, narrower crack width, wider Mechanism of Asphalt Reinforcement spacing between cracks, and deviation of cracks.
