Tracy Dempsey Originals Scottsdale Community College alumna Tracy Dempsey pairs sweet with savory locally produced ingredients in her baked goods, desserts and confections. Her treats can be found in some of the Valley’s top restaurants, and at some establishments, the entire dessert program is of Dempsey’s design. At The Gladly in Phoenix (2201 E. Camelback Rd.), she incorporates ingredients from AZ Bitters Lab for a peach frangipane crostada; her sought-after bacon brittle is available here as well as at Citizen Public House in Scottsdale (7111 E. 5th Ave.). Bread-and-butter pudding with apple-cranberry compote and caramel ice cream is one of four Tracy Dempsey Originals desserts at nook (3623 E. Indian School Rd.), and neighboring Crudo (3603 E. Indian School Rd.) features a chocolate olive oil cake with dulce de latte mascarpone, and a fig crostada made with goat cheese from Fossil Creek Creamery in Strawberry, Ariz. Tracy Dempsey Originals are also found on menus at House of Tricks and The Revival in Tempe; The Stockyards in Phoenix; and Karsen’s Grill, Uncle Sal’s and The Blind Pig in Scottsdale.

Imported from Minnesota As the 70-degree days of Phoenix’s season of perfection arrive, so do visitors from the Midwest. A few thousand snowbirds usually flock from Minnesota, and this year they were preceded by a shipment of 40 works of art. The works—flat and three-dimensional, reflecting real landscapes or spiritual concepts— were made by a Chippewa artist with a modernist aesthetic. “Modern Spirit: The Art of George Morrison” (1919-2000), half of which is comprised of specimens from the Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul, is on-view at Phoenix’s Heard Museum through Jan. 11, 2015.

Art Departure The art world brims with portraits of beautiful women in perfect makeup and gorgeous fashions. Painter Lane Bennion focuses, instead, on scenes likely visited prior to such coiffed and costumed sittings: opulent department store windows and cosmetics counters. Bennion’s oil-on-canvas “Escape” is shown above; the artist is represented locally at Scottsdale Fine Art (7116 E. Main St., 480.990.3100).
