An historic Lychgate, constructed nearly 90 years ago to commemorate the men of Kawhia and district who lost their lives in WWI, has been given a new lease of life. The Lychgate at All Saints Angli- can Church in Kawhia was built in 1925 by a local craftsman, Percy Ward. Carved above the Lychgate are the words ‘THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE’ and there is an Honour Roll of 32 names. The restoration of the gate has been part of the upgrading of the church carried out by Steve Morris and supported by the family of Moya Shaw. Everyone involved were greatly

impressed by the quality of the 9190783AA work that went into the construc- PRIME LOCATION tion of the gate. The Australian Jarrah timber with Rural Mountain Views! was shipped directly into Kawhia Harbour, and its massive beams have resisted the elements well. Next year is the centenary of the outbreak of WWI, so church mem- bers and local historians deemed it appropriate to ‘refresh’ the memory of local men who died, and the Lychgate is a wonderful symbol of that. Earlier this month, it was rededicated at a ceremony led by the Bishop of Waikato and Tara- naki, Philip Richardson. BY COLIN THORSEN

Te Awamutu Sports Cricket Club’s new practise net facility at Albert Park is right up with the best in the Waikato. Sports club manager, Keith Parsons is hoping the $18,000 investment will spark more interest in cricket locally and get more players on board when the new season comes round later in the year. The two practise wickets were made possible through grants from Lion Foun- dation and big support from Wrathalls The Concrete People, whose owner Wayne Wrathall donated time, labour and equip- ment to keep the cost down. Parsons says Wrathall’s generosity allowed the club to put new netting up around the practise block. The driving forces behind the project were Brett Christopher, captain of Te Awamutu Sports Gold cricket team, and team-mate Bryce McCandlish. ‘‘The club appreciates the passion shown by these two young players getting the job underway and done, as well as the other players involved in the working bees’’ says Parsons. ■ Any newcomers or past players wishing to play cricket next season can contact either Brett Christopher on 027 369-3739 or SET IN CONCRETE: Te Awamutu Sports Gold cricket captain Brett Christopher (right) thanks Wayne Wrathall for his generosity Keith Parsons on 871-3910. helping making the first class practise net facility at Albert Park possible.
